Episode 585

Extended Summary

Steven is at the Diner looking for Bobby and tells Ailsa he thinks something is going on between Donald and Pippa. Ailsa tells Steven that Pippa is entitled to a life of her own and admits she knows Donald likes her.

Alf is hobbling around the store on his bad ankle. Marilyn is talking to him about Jane’s self-confidence. She thinks there must be more to life than stacking shelves. She tells Alf she’s made up her mind… she’s going to join the police force!

At Jane’s caravan, she admits to Grant that she may have overreacted in arresting the guys who were hassling Marilyn in the diner. She wanted to do was join the police so the bad guys would get what’s coming to them, but what happened to Liz is so unfair. Grant tells her to get some sleep.

Steven arrives at Donald’s house and demands he leave Pippa alone as they don’t want him trying to replace Tom. Donald yells at Steven, telling him to leave. Returning home, Pippa apologises to Steven for snapping at him. She tells him what happened with Donald. She feels awful for looking horrified and humiliating Donald. Steven admits he may have made things worse. Later, Ailsa arrives and Pippa says she should have listened when she warned her about Donald. She plans to apologise to him tomorrow.

Jane is woken by Marilyn’s arrival at the caravan to tell her she wants to join the police as it must be rewarding. Jane responds sarcastically. Grant returns and tells Marilyn that Jane needs to rest.

The following morning, Pippa is checking out at the store and has brought Steven with her to carry the groceries. Marilyn asks Steven if he can give her some self defence lessons and they agree to meet later. Donald comes in and Pippa asks if she can call round later but Donald brushes her off.

Grant discusses Jane with Ailsa at the Diner and reflects that it could have been Jane who died. Ailsa says it sounds like Grant is really serious about Jane. Donald arrives and Grant asks him to help him remember a quote about love. Donald thinks they are having a laugh at his expense, tells them to mind their own business, and storms out.

Marilyn and Steven are in gym wear at the surf club as Steven tries to teach Marilyn about breathing, but she doesn’t think it will be very useful if she’s being attacked!

Pippa visits Donald at home and apologises for her reaction. She should have realised what was happening. Donald claims it won’t affect their friendship but says he has a lot of work to do. Pippa responds with, “Yes of course, I must go. Thank you for being understanding.” And those, appropriately, are the last words spoken by Vanessa Downing in the role of Pippa.

Marilyn finally gets the hang of what Steven is teaching her and throws him impressively to the floor. Back at the store, she tells Alf all about it and begs him to let her give him a demonstration. She struggles to push Alf to the ground but manages to fling him into a box, and he groans. He’s done his flamin’ ankle again!

Donald has returned to the Diner and chats to Ailsa over a coffee. He knows she wouldn’t have betrayed his confidence. Ailsa thinks it’s good that he had the courage to face his feelings and that Pippa knows she has a real friend to rely on.

Grant is concerned to find Jane getting ready for work instead of taking her two days’ leave. Jane insists it’s better for her to be working; she can handle it. Grant says he doesn’t think he can handle her being a police woman. Jane asks if he’s asking her to choose between him and her job, and Grant says yes.
