Extended Summary

Pippa finds Steven up first thing in the morning and notes she isn’t expecting Sally and Sophie to surface until late but she needs to clear up the surf club. Steven reminds her of the fun run and says he’ll have to get the bus if Grant isn’t going. He tells her he heard a report on the radio of an armed siege in Yabbie Creek, where a man took hostages and shot a police officer. He goes to Grant’s caravan and wakes him up. Grant isn’t up to the fun run and wonders why Jane didn’t show up at the reception. Steven suggests she might have been called out to the siege. Worried, Grant checks Jane’s caravan but finds it empty. At the house, Pippa hears a radio report saying the police officer has died and a man has been charged with murder. Grant comes in and tries to phone the police station but there’s no answer. Pippa suggests he try the hospital.

Bobby is surprised to find Don up and not showing any ill effects. He insists he wasn’t drunk the previous night but can’t recall what happened. Bobby reminds him he tried to teach Sharon Hill the twist, sang Danny Boy and wanted to go to a disco. Don says he thought it might be fun and Bobby realises he does remember. Don quickly heads out to the store.

Grant is unable to get an answer from the hospital as to whether Jane was brought in or not. Jane then staggers into the house, looking dishevelled and upset. She tells Grant and Pippa she was holding the dead officer’s hand when she died. Later, Grant and Jane are walking on the beach. Jane explains the dead woman, Liz, and her partner were called out to a domestic but when they knocked on the door the man shot her and barricaded himself and his family in upstairs before taking potshots at the police. Jane saw her being taken away in an ambulance but didn’t realise it was her until later. The sergeant told her to go home but she went to the hospital where Jane was in surgery and sat with her until she died around seven o’clock.

Don calls round to see Pippa, who still isn’t dressed. He apologises for making a spectacle of himself but Pippa says it was good to see him enjoying himself. She notes she’d like to go back to bed but has to sort out the surf club. Don says he can do that and, despite her protests, hurries off. Grant and Jane arrive back at her caravan. Jane says the man showed no remorse when he gave himself up and wishes they’d killed him, saying he’ll be out in a couple of years. Grant thinks she should get some rest but Jane insists she just needs to blow off steam and heads out again.

Two punks are standing by the jukebox in the Diner as Matt serves their drinks. Bobby tells Matt she wants to go and get the plates back from the surf club but is reluctant to leave him to handle the pair on their own. Matt points out that Grant and Jane have just come in and convinces her he’ll be all right. Bobby finds Don sweeping up at the surf club. She suggests he might be trying to impress Pippa, recalling she was the only person he didn’t dance with, and says she’d be fine if they got together. Don insists they’re just friends but Bobby says she thought that was all she and Frank were but things changed. Don admits he’s confused about his feelings and makes Bobby promise not to say anything.

Jane isn’t touching her food and expresses the opinion they should bring back the death penalty, if someone shoots someone and doesn’t show remorse. Grant says they’ll have to agree to disagree. Marilyn comes in and asks Matt for some cheesecake. While he’s in the back getting it, the two punks come over and start chatting Marilyn up. She makes it clear she’s not interested but they continue hassling her and touching her. Matt comes out and tells them to leave her alone. One of them grabs hold of him. Jane grabs the one who is still touching Marilyn in an armlock and Grant grabs the other one when he tries to hit her.  Jane tells Matt to call the police station for back-up, she’s arresting them both. A short time later, Marilyn and Matt are impressed by Jane’s behaviour. Grant comes back in after watching Jane haul them down the station. He thinks she overreacted and should have just thrown them out. Matt suggests being charged might make them think twice about causing trouble. Grant insists this isn’t like Jane.

Bobby visits Pippa and they chat about Don’s behaviour the previous night. Pippa says it’s nice to see him behave like a human being given he seems like a stuffed shirt. Bobby asks if that’s how she sees him and Pippa says she thinks he’s sweet and is grateful he took her to the reunion. Bobby asks what she thinks about her future but is interrupted by a phone call from Steven, saying he came third in the fun run.  Bobby asks her again and Pippa says she might be married again in ten years’ time. Bobby suggests it might be someone she already knows and Pippa agrees. Later, Bobby tells Don about the conversation.  Don isn’t entirely happy about her bringing it up with Pippa but Bobby encourages him to be honest and tell her he likes her.

Grant is waiting in Jane’s caravan when she arrives back. Jane thinks he’s there to give her a lecture. Grant insists she overreacted but Jane points out if she’d just thrown them out they could have waited for Marilyn down the street. She says he can protect himself and doesn’t understand some men think they can do what they like to a pretty woman. She says she’s meant to prevent crime, not just clean up the mess afterwards. She breaks down in tears and Grant comforts her.

Don turns up at Pippa’s with some flowers from the garden. He comments on how he understands how lonely it can be, being on your own, and if she ever wanted a personal relationship he’d be honoured.  Pippa is shocked to realise he’s talking about the two of them being together. Don thinks she must have known but Pippa says it didn’t occur to her. Mortified, Don rushes off. Pippa tries to stop him but Steven arrives home and jokingly asks if he interrupted something. Pippa snaps at him to shut up and storms out.  Don arrives home. He sits in a chair, looking upset.
