Grant first appeared in the Diner when Adam and Emma put up a poster for the surf competition. Grant was interested and indicated he’d be sticking around. Enamoured, Emma immediately began hanging around him and asked him for surf lessons. Soon after he moved into the caravan park, Adam broke into his van and found a photo album, indicating Grant had multiple Iron Man wins under his belt. Having started at Summer Bay High, Grant found himself becoming friendly with the students due to his youthful attitude and friendly demeanour. However, his career was threatened when Vicki Baxter accused him of inappropriate conduct.

Despite being suspended and investigation being conducted, Emma forced the truth out of Vicki who redacted her claims. Grant was reinstated at the school. His next venture was an amateur night after learning of the talent on the piano student Paul Jensen had. Grant urged Paul to realise his potential, but received pushback from his mother Lorraine who was worried Paul would become a musician and desert her like his father did. Grant organised an amateur night as a thinly veiled reason for Paul to show off his talents.

Grant found himself enamoured with newcomer Jane. Eventually, he learnt she was a police officer. The pair went on a date together and entered into a relationship. Grant was also the best man at Ben and Carly’s wedding. He supported Jane after she left the police force, and then the pair agreed to move in together. After signing a lease on the flat Matt and Adam used to live in, Grant was surprised with a cat called Smokey. Despite spending very little time together, Grant’s wanting to spend time with his friends and his vegetarian lifestyle caused ructions within the relationship.

After discussing things with Bobby and Ben, Grant made the decision to break up with Jane, unaware she had also come to the same conclusion following a discussion with Ailsa. Some weeks later, Grant found himself with an unlikely roommate in Marilyn. After she and Adam decided to pursue a relationship, Marilyn didn’t want to live with him. Learning Grant wanted to split the rent, she moved in for two weeks. He also found himself a professional enemy in new deputy principal Alan Stone, who put him off-side by caning Blake, whom Grant had been training for the iron man contest.

Grant organised a school excursion to the city. When there, he caught Blake and Sophie kissing in a cemetery, which caused a brief rift between him and Blake, however they soon reconciled. After Matt decided he didn’t want to live with lovebirds Adam and Marilyn, he moved in with Grant. As the school year neared its end, Grant decided to put on a performance of Romeo and Juliet. He cast Blake and Sophie in the respective roles. Following a stoush with Alan Stone, Blake was barred from the performance, leading to him casting Haydn as Romeo.

When Grant’s younger sister Kim arrived in town, he was over the moon. However when money began missing, Matt and Steven learnt that she had a drug problem. Matt kept the truth from Grant, but Steven revealed the truth. When he confronted Kim, he found drugs in her bag. He put the drugs down the sink, and decided to take Kim away to the bush to help her get clean.

Several weeks later, Grant returned with news of his sister’s sobriety. He was surprised to find a drunken Adam in his bed when he return to the apartment he and Matt shared. Despite his plight, Grant was unable to return to his role at Summer Bay High. He gained employment as the beach inspector, replacing Matt. Grant helped Ben do up the cottage that he rented for him and an unhappy Carly.

Following the Department’s decision to fire Patricia Coleman from Summer Bay High – ironically, Grant’s replacement – she found a job in Timboon and tried to convince Grant to come with him. After a conversation with Adam, Grant decided to take Patricia up on her offer.

Several months later, Grant returned to Summer Bay for a visit, surprising his old friends. He was quick to comfort Sophie after she learnt of David’s death and convinced her that she shouldn’t blame Pippa and Michael. He also provided a character reference for Karen. When out for a surf, he came across Lois Crawford and assisted her with her flat tyre. Grant explained his teaching history in Summer Bay after learning she was the new principal and she offered him a job, replacing Fisher with him. Grant learnt the truth from Bobby and told Lois he didn’t want to replace Fisher, but learnt he had resigned. When Fisher was reinstated, Grant decided to move back to the city.
