Crime pays for Mackenzie. Felicity’s glamorous surprise for Tane is a welcome distraction. Mia’s family feast goes to waste.
Extended Summary
Salt is being set up for the poker night. Felicity tells Ryder to get Tane whatever he wants to drink and greets one of the attendees, James. She tells the group that it’s a $100 buy-in for the first table and $200 for the other two, before encouraging them to spend money on cocktails. Downstairs, Dean and Ziggy discuss the fact that Amber and Jai had to leave before joining them for pizza, with Dean blaming it on Jai wanting to keep playing footy. Ziggy wants to eat-in to avoid Bella and her hangers-on. However, they then see a confused Justin and Logan waiting at the foot of the stairs to Salt: A sign says it’s closed for a private function.
Mackenzie answers a call from Logan and worriedly tells Felicity he wants to come up. Felicity suggests letting him come, since doctors earn a lot of money. Mackenzie says that, unlike her, she doesn’t invite her boyfriend to illegal gambling and decides to go down instead. Ryder asks Tane what he knows about cards; he isn’t keen to get involved himself but likes the vibe. Downstairs, Mackenzie tells the others that the place is closed for a “workplace anniversary celebration”. Logan is rather open-mouthed at her appearance, prompting Ziggy to say she looks gorgeous. Another player, Nathan, arrives and Mackenzie ushers him upstairs. Logan offers to help out but Mackenzie says hospitality is obviously not his thing.
Dean and Ziggy arrive home and are stunned at how neat and quiet it is. They find a note from Bella: She and her friends have gone to the movies and have left burritos in the fridge for them to warm up. Later, they note that with neither of them having done the cooking, they don’t need to clear up. However, as they’re relaxing, Mia arrives looking for Chloe. They explain about her being at the movies. Mia says it was good of someone to let her know. She recognises the Mexican food: The reveal that Chloe left it them makes it even more awkward. She turns down an offer of leftovers, saying she’s got plenty of those already.
At the Diner, Marilyn serves Justin takeaway, saying there’s an extra something in there for Theo to mark his apprenticeship. Roo tries talking to Marilyn about Alf and Martha but Marilyn isn’t really listening and has also forgotten the coffee Roo ordered. She says she’s been at a loose end since coming back to the Bay. Roo suggests getting Logan, who is sat nearby, to talk to her but Marilyn declines. Back at Salt, Tane is playing at one of the tables with a crowd including Nathan and ends up buying him a drink. Mackenzie also accepts a large drink order from another table. Felicity encourages Mackenzie to admit that this was a good idea and she’s having fun.
Later, Tane is playing and Nathan raises him. Felicity gives Ryder a large drink order, while Mackenzie says they’ve made $5000, enough to pay off the liquour supplier. She gives Ryder and Felicity their pay, saying it’s also hush money. She gets a text from Logan saying he wants to walk her home, and the others agree to close up. Tane is still betting against Nathan. Felicity comes over and kisses him. After giving her a long look, Tane goes all in. Meanwhile, Mackenzie intercepts Logan on the stairs, saying he doesn’t need to help her clear up because the staff are doing it.
Mia apologises to Dean and Ziggy for being needy. She thinks even Tane’s tired of her and she hasn’t seen Chloe in days. She decides to head off. At Salt, Felicity is showing the last few people out, including Nathan, who says he’ll win his money back next time. Ryder asks Tane how much money he won and Felicity says it’s enough to buy her breakfast. He agrees it was just what he needed.
Tane and Felicity arrive back at the house. Felicity asks if they can play cards, suggesting they wager clothing, but Tane doesn’t think Mia and Chloe would appreciate it. They suddenly remember the family meal and realise that the fridge is full of food but there’s no-one there. Mia comes back just as Tane is phoning her but is rather bitter about them having had a good night. Next morning, Mackenzie watches Logan on his jet ski. She says she made enough money to pay him back and it’s a shame he left their bed so early, before suggesting they go to Salt for breakfast.
Tane suggests to Felicity that they make breakfast for Mia instead of going out. Mia appears and apologises for being moody last night. Tane says he wouldn’t have gone out if he’d known Nikau and Chloe weren’t coming home. Felicity asks how she likes her eggs, saying Tane’s cooking. Mia says she has to go to work but Tane says he’ll open up. At the surf club, Ryder greets Mackenzie and Logan, having just finished clearing up. Mackenzie sends Logan upstairs as Felicity also arrives. She says that while it hasn’t got them out of debt, the previous night means they live to fight another day. However, she refuses to have any more poker nights. Ryder is disappointed but Felicity says Mia was the one taking the risk. She notices Tane and says he looks like he’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders again and is allowed a night to himself.
Dean and Ziggy run into Justin on the beach. He says he went surfing early because he has to open the garage. Dean spots Tane nearby and asks him if he had a good time last night, saying Mia turned up at theirs upset. Tane tells him to stay out of it and walks away. At the garage, Justin gets a call from Leah and tells her that Theo has gone to get some parts. He is shocked to hear that Dimitri’s on his way but says he’ll get Ziggy to cover.
At the surf club, Dean complains to Ziggy that Tane didn’t need to blow up at him but admits that he could have handled it better. Ziggy gets a text from Justin asking her to work and says that Tane was right about it not being any of their business. Dean says it is when the family are round at their place all the time. Ziggy suggests he set some ground rules, especially with Chloe, and leaves him to figure it out.
