Extended Summary

Mackenzie and Ziggy are finishing off a surf on the beach. Ziggy notes Dean will be sorry he’s missed it and Mackenzie says she’ll tease him about it. She tells Ziggy about Amber and Jai visiting Dean, then wonders if Ziggy’s going to go and see him, since he doesn’t know about her and Tane. Ziggy wonders if he remembers her being there when he came in. Tane comes past and ignores Ziggy’s greeting. Mackenzie suggests he was worried about Nikau but Ziggy isn’t convinced that’s the reason. At the hospital, Ari is by Nikau’s bedside. Mia comes in but refuses Ari’s offer of the chair. She notes she wishes Nikau was coming home with her because he’s the reason she made it. Chloe appears and Mia goes to sort her discharge papers, bluntly refusing Ari’s offer of help.

Mackenzie visits Dean with a breakfast burger. He tries to avoid discussing if he’s in pain and admits he hasn’t told Karen how badly injured he is, since she doesn’t mix well with hospitals. He asks about Ziggy, but quickly changes the subject to the burger. Meanwhile, Tane finds Ziggy waiting at the gym and tells her to talk to another trainer. Ziggy says they can’t avoid each other forever and suggests they try and be friends. Tane says she’s doing it to make herself feel better. Ziggy leaves.

Bella arrives at Nikau’s room at the hospital. The sandy-haired nurse suggests she sit with him and she does, talking to him. Meanwhile, Mackenzie is admiring the large selection of Jai’s drawings on Dean’s wall. Ziggy arrives and Mackenzie takes that as a cue to go and visit Nikau. They discuss Jai’s visits and surfing. Dean asks Ziggy if she’s got any news but she says she’s just been working and quickly heads off on the pretext of getting a coffee.

Ari and Chloe bring Mia home and she gives Nikau a warm hug, saying she’s sorry about him and Ziggy. Chloe quips that he’d better not want his old room back. Ari asks Mia if she wants something to eat. She asks him to go to the Diner to get takeaway, then says she just wants a shower and to go to bed. Ari suggests to Tane that things will settle down, without much conviction. Later, the two are walking on the beach. Ari thinks that Mia is pushing him away. Tane thinks he’s reading too much into it. Ari doesn’t want to make her talk when she doesn’t want to. Tane suggests calling Gemma for advice and telling her about Nikau at the same time. Ari insists Nikau will call her when he’s back on his feet.

Dean asks Ziggy why she’s here, wondering if she was there when he was brought in, since he’s not sure what was real and what was a dream. Ziggy says she was there and they talked but it wasn’t about anything important. Dean says it must have been a dream then. Meanwhile, Mackenzie finds Bella with Nikau. Bella isn’t sure if she should be there, given how things were between them before the accident, but Mackenzie thinks she’s where she belongs. She mentions Ziggy visiting Dean, saying the accident has shown people what’s important.

Tori arrives at the Diner with Grace. Marilyn congratulates her for the wedding being back on and admits she’s told everyone. Tori reveals Christian’s moved back in. Ari arrives and they ask about Mia and Nikau. His attention is drawn to Grace. Tori offers him a cuddle with her but he says that he’s not staying, just getting a takeaway. Back at the Parata house, Mia emerges from her room and chats pleasantly to Chloe about her tea making. Ari arrives with the takeaway, including muffins from Marilyn, but Mia shows no interest. She notices the scan photo isn’t on the fridge. Ari says he took it down and Mia angrily accuses him of throwing it out, before heading out the back.

Mackenzie pops her head round Dean’s room, telling him and Ziggy that she has to check in at work but will be back later. Dean suggests Ziggy might have things to do with her boyfriend. Mackenzie calls Ziggy out into the corridor and asks why she hasn’t told Dean about Tane. Ziggy says it’s complicated. Mackenzie isn’t happy about her lying to him. Meanwhile, Ari cautiously approaches Mia with the box of mementos of Kauri. He explains that he thought the photo might be upsetting so put it in the box for safekeeping. Mia doesn’t respond so Ari leaves her alone: She looks at the photo once he’s gone. Ari tells Chloe he’s going to check on Nikau, leaving her to look after Mia.

Mackenzie finds Tane drinking at Salt and realises he’s thinking about Ziggy. He wonders if he made a mistake breaking up with her, saying he was fine before they got together but got used to being with her. He decides to try and phone her to work things out. After failing to dissuade him, Mackenzie admits Ziggy has been at the hospital with Dean all afternoon. Meanwhile, Dean wonders what’s going on with Ziggy. She admits that she broke up with Tane, saying she doesn’t want to talk about it.

Bella runs into Tane in the corridor. She says she’s visiting Nikau. Tane says she’s not needed and to go and visit Dean. Bella wonders where he’s been if he cares about Nikau, while Tane says she’s the reason Nikau’s lying there. Ari appears and tells Tane that Bella has every right to be there, refusing to let him see Nikau in this state and getting him to leave.
