Levi keeps up with his lies. Tane is trapped by red tape. Roo is called to action.

Extended Summary

Mali runs into Tane outside the surf club and asks if he got his e-mail about changing rosters at the gym. He also suggests Tane go back there now he’s not allowed at the hospital. Seeing Rose approaching, Tane makes pointed remarks about people not letting him do anything else. He walks off before Rose gets there, leaving Mali to greet her warmly.

Inside the surf club, Alf gets off the phone to Roo and again expresses his concerns to Marilyn about her spending all her time with Maia at the hospital. Marilyn offers to go and talk to her. Alf agrees she might listen and asks Marilyn to get Roo to meet him for lunch. Tane appears and Alf asks to talk to him. Tane says he doesn’t have time and Alf asks him to make time.

Levi and Eden walk through a park area. Eden notes that Levi put her in a position where she had to lie to Imogen without even knowing why she did it and says Levi was too gutless to tell Imogen he needed space. Levi says he didn’t want to hurt her. Eden refers to herself as his sister, not his excuse, and tells him not to put her in that position again.

Felicity approaches Alf and Tane at Salt and asks if they want anything. Alf says to give them a minute while Tane doesn’t say anything. Roo joins them and assures Tane that Maia’s all right. Alf notes Tane can’t go to the hospital because of what happened with Peter. Roo says that’s her fault for going to the editor but Tane thinks they would have gone after him anyway. Alf says Tane’s the closest thing to family the baby has. He asks about Tane being an emergency foster carer and Tane explains about not being a permanent resident and how his visa doesn’t give him the same rights.

Eden and Levi go to the coffee cart where Marilyn asks if Levi’s there for work or his sister. Eden says she’s trying to work that out. She agrees to stop making Levi squirm and offers to be there to talk about his problems. Levi changes the subject to Remi, saying he’s put him in touch with the best doctor in the area.

Down in the gym, Rose helps Mali pack a bag for a trainer. She says it’s all right to talk about Tane. Mali admits Tane’s all over the place, while Rose feels bad about denying Maia her one constant presence. She gets a call from Alf and agrees to come up and see him, telling Mali it’ll be about what everyone wants to talk to her about.

Roo checks Alf doesn’t want them to stay, while Tane notes he won’t be much use. Felicity watches as they go out past Rose. Alf asks Rose if there’s any way to get rid of the threat of the AVO against Tane. Rose says Sarge was very clear and the moment Tane laid a finger on Peter it was out of her hands. Alf thinks it’s all for show. Rose thinks Tane needs to move on.

At the coffee cart, Marilyn chats to Roo and Tane, thinking that Alf will sort things out. Tane is less than convinced. Moments later, Alf appears and admits that he couldn’t talk Rose round, and even if he had, she wouldn’t have been able to talk her sergeant round.

At Salt, Rose has filled Felicity in on what happened. Mali joins them as Rose wonders why Tane’s so obsessed about the baby anyway. Mali says it’s complicated and Rose realises there’s something she doesn’t know. Felicity says it’s because of her and why their marriage ended. At the Diner, Alf, Marilyn and Roo are packing up. Both Roo and Marilyn don’t think it’s fair that Tane’s banned from fostering despite all the work he does in the community. Alf tries to talk Roo out of going back to the hospital but she insists.

At the Lyrik house, Levi speaks to a doctor on the phone and tells Eden that Remi’s fine but they’re keeping him overnight. He says he has to get going. Eden wonders whether he’s going home or back to a hotel and suggests he stays there in Remi’s room so they can spend some actual time together. Levi tries to put her off but eventually agrees.

Later, Levi is speaking to Mackenzie on the phone, saying he won’t be able to get back to her because he needs to get home tomorrow. Eden opens the door after he ignores her knock and Levi quickly ends the call, saying it was an old patient. Eden gives him a drink and muses on how they’d still be living separate lives if Mackenzie hadn’t had her heart attack. She proposes a toast to her which Levi somewhat ironically echoes, drinking straight down. Eden says she understands his concerns about the baby but he needs to talk about them.

Next morning, Rose thanks Mali for staying over and for not pushing things with Tane. They see Tane heading towards the surf club in uniform, although he ignores Rose’s greeting. Mali tells Rose Tane will know eventually that she just wants what’s best for Maia and kisses her goodbye. Inside, Felicity greets Tane and tells him she heard what happened. Tane reminds her he told her not to check in with him. Mali comes past them to his counter and Roo appears from the office, asking Tane why he doesn’t apply to be a resident. Tane says he’s thought of that and invites her into the gym to talk it over.

At the Diner, Eden relays a text from Remi to Levi, saying he’s all clear to go home and she has to go and pick him up. Levi says to tell him to take it easy. Eden says to call her next time he needs a break from home and to talk to Imogen. Another text from Remi prompts her to go. Alf turns up and talks to Marilyn about Roo, who he hasn’t seen today.

At the gym, Tane is explaining to Roo that it takes three months minimum to become a resident and it could take months after that to become a foster carer. Roo says they might have found an emergency carer by then but Tane says the chances are Maia will have to be sent out of the area. Roo concludes the problem is a lack of local emergency carers and says that’s an issue the papers should be writing about. Tane suggests her.

Felicity is frantically wiping down the counter at Salt and manages to knock some notepads on the floor. Mali helps her pick them up and notes seeing her with Tane. Felicity accepts she’s not the best person for him to talk to and feels guilty for not giving him what he wanted. Mali says this isn’t her fault. Downstairs, Roo approaches Alf in the office and tells him about Tane’s idea for her to become an emergency foster carer for Maia, which she’s thinking about.
