Extended Summary

Dean and Ziggy arrive back at the hospital with Izzy and are greeted by Bree. They briefly explain what’s wrong and that she’s been in already. Bree says to take her through and they’ll do some blood work. Later, Ziggy holds Izzy as Bree takes a blood sample. Bree says to give her a cuddle and that they can all stay there overnight. Dean follows Bree out of the cubicle and presses for information on what happens now. Bree says if they find something in the blood they’d have to do a lumbar puncture. Dean tries insisting they can’t but Bree says it’s necessary to rule out meningitis.

At the Diner, Xander gives Rose a slice of cake. He reminds her that her last relationship was with Tex and suggests she found going there with Mali scary. Rose says she thought she was ready. Xander reminds her she said Tex wasn’t going to win and advises her to talk to Mali. At the surf club, Roo is amused to find Alf in the office looking through John’s manual to set up e-mails on his phone. Roo offers to help but Alf declines, death glaring her when she pushes it. Mali comes in and says his evening hasn’t gone as expected, with Roo advising him against offering to help Alf.

Next morning, Xander meets Mali on the beach for another surf lesson. They awkwardly chat about Rose before seeing Gabe coming out of the water with a cut head. They go over; Xander realises he’s Mackenzie’s friend and they do introductions. Gabe explains a surfboard hit him on the head while he was swimming. Xander convinces him to come to the surf club to get seen to, taking a rain check with Mali.

Xander and Gabe head up to Salt with Xander trying to get Gabe to keep an ice pack on. He wonders where Mackenzie is and Gabe says she’s in the city meeting a new chef or supplier: She had two meetings and he’s not sure which came first. Gabe turns away and almost falls over. Xander insists on taking him to hospital and he accepts it’s a good idea.

Bree tells Dean and Ziggy that Izzy’s tests came back clear. She doesn’t need antibiotics or a lumbar puncture. Ziggy wonders what caused the temperature and Bree says probably viral gastritis: Being around a lot of people and putting her hands in her mouth means she could have picked it up from anywhere and they’ll probably never know. Later, as they’re leaving. Dean checks with Bree that they did the right thing coming in. They pass Xander and Gabe. Xander introduces Gabe to Bree and comments on never being off duty.

At the surf club, Rose approaches Mali and apologises for last night. Mali says it’s no big deal and she’s allowed to change her mind. Rose starts to explain about having a bad experience in her last relationship but Mali says she doesn’t have to and heads outside. Bewildered, Rose follows him, saying she was about to bear her soul. Mali reiterates that she doesn’t have to and she has the right to change her mind. Rose agrees, still a bit confused. Mali says they’ll leave it at that and goes off to take a class.

Alf comes into the Diner and announces to Marilyn and Roo that he’s done it. Roo quips about it taking half a day and Alf blames John’s instructions. He tests it by sending a message. Moments later, several phones in the room bleep with alerts. Roo says he’s said something about John that she can’t say out loud. She checks Alf’s phone and discovers a message he was sending to Gerald was done as “Reply all”, meaning he sent it to everyone that subscribes to the surf club newsletter, including John himself.

Later, Alf approaches Roo and asks if she can show him how the upgrade works: He’s lost all his e-mails and can’t find his address book. Roo asks if he’s going to be stubborn and difficult and Alf admits probably. Mali comes in and sits with Xander, asking him about Gabe. He makes a similar comment to Xander about never being off duty and suggests that’s why things are over between him and Rose. Xander asks if he’s sure.

Bree checks Gabe over and concludes it’s probably just a concussion. When she asks about his medical history, Gabe hesitates before admitting he used to be on a cocktail of immunosuppresant drugs. Bree realises he had cancer and Gabe says it was Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma: He spent two years battling it but has been in remission a year. Bree says the dizziness was probably down to the concussion but wants to run more tests.

Mali tracks Rose down on the beach and asks to talk. He checks that she wasn’t ending things earlier and asks about the ex-boyfriend. Rose says it’s hard for her to trust herself. Mali suggests she also finds it hard to trust anyone else. Rose says she’d like to try. Mali says he’s a straight talker but could work on listening. At the hospital, Bree takes a moment to gather herself before going into Gabe’s cubicle. She tells him there were abnormalities in his blood so she wants to send him for a scan. Gabe guesses the cancer’s back and asks for a minute. He looks as though he’s struggling to hold it together.

At the farm house, Dean finds Ziggy looking teary. She says she’s a terrible mother but Dean tells her she did all the right things. They are interrupted by Izzy crying and Dean goes to see to her. Ziggy gets the laptop out and looks up viral gastritis. Later, Dean comes back, saying Izzy needs a feed. Ziggy is cleaning everything, thinking Izzy picked up germs there, and ignores his attempts to dissuade her.
