Extended Summary
Mackenzie and Remi run into each other on the beach. Remi says Eden’s making him do his physio and Lyrik should make a comeback soon. Mackenzie wonders if his smile is to do with a certain lady doctor and Remi says things are good with Bree. He asks her about the restaurant mogul. Mackenzie says Gabe’s been useful to have around with Felicity struggling, before admitting she sees him in her future. At the hospital, Bree tells Gabe she’s booked him in for a scan and possibly a biopsy and ultrasound afterwards. Gabe is quick to leave and makes sure Bree knows not to tell anyone.
Dean tells Ziggy he’s going out for a pizza. Ziggy says she’s been checking parenting blogs and has made a list of appropriate cleaning products that he can get from Yabbie Creek. Dean protests he’s barely had any sleep and Ziggy says it can wait until tomorrow morning. She asks him to get an organic salad, which Dean isn’t sure Salt does, to help with healthy breastfeeding and says she’ll ring Mackenzie about it. Down by the beach, Gabe gets a text from Mackenzie asking where he is. Dean appears and asks about his head. Gabe says Xander was just being cautious. Dean invites him up to Salt as Gabe gets another text from Mackenzie saying she’s worried.
Dean and Gabe meet Mackenzie up at Salt. Dean is surprised Mackenzie didn’t know about his injury so fills her in, then has to fill her in on Izzy spending the night in hospital. Mackenzie says Ziggy didn’t mention it when she rang in about the meal, which she presents to Dean: a grilled fish and salad without dressing. She adds that she probably won’t be home, leading Gabe onto the balcony where she has set up a romantic meal with his favourite shiraz, although she points out he shouldn’t drink it with a concussion. She explains she planned to move out when the baby was born so suggests they get a place together. Gabe says he can’t do that and abruptly leaves. Mackenzie follows him outside where he says she took him by surprise and suggests they talk about it tomorrow morning.
Marilyn serves Remi at the Diner. Bree comes in and says she hopes he hasn’t taken the last serving of lasagne. Marilyn admits he actually has. Remi suggests they share it and Bree says she’ll get dessert. Remi wonders about her mood and she says she had to give a patient bad news. Later, the two of them are eating at the Lyrik house. Bree calls it civilised and normal, joking that could be the ironic title of Lyrik’s next song. She says she’s arranged to see a counsellor and a support group, although she’s rather uncertain about it since she’s never spoken about Jacob to anyone other than him. Remi assures her she’s strong.
Ziggy has put Izzy down as Dean serves up the food. Izzy starts crying and Dean says he’ll go. Ziggy asks if he’s washed his hands, saying she’s determined not to have another night like last night. Dean reluctantly seems prepared to do so but Ziggy says she’ll go. Later, Mackenzie arrives home: She is surprised to see Dean up and he is surprised to see her there. She tells him about Gabe shutting her down when she suggested moving in together. Ziggy comes home and is also surprised to see Mackenzie there. Mackenzie heads off to bed.
Next morning, Dean comes across Gabe on the beach and tries to question him about what happened with Mackenzie. Gabe isn’t in the mood for talking and, when Dean grabs him by the arm, snaps that he can’t do this. Dean asks what’s going on. Meanwhile, Ziggy arrives at the Diner with Izzy in the pram but stops Marilyn approaching her since she’s just got her to sleep. She checks that the Diner’s decaf coffee beans are organic then, on recalling that Marilyn’s into herbal remedies, asks if she can help her with something.
Gabe has filled Dean in on his cancer history. He says he looked Mackenzie up because he felt he’d been given a second chance at life and there was never a right moment to tell her. Dean asks him what his plan is as far as treatment is concerned and he says he doesn’t have one. At the surf club, Bree runs into Remi, who was collecting a takeaway, and thanks him for last night. Remi heads off to meet Eden. Gabe comes in and Bree wonders why he isn’t at his appointment. Gabe says he’s not going and insists he knows what he’s doing. He walks out, passing Dean.
Up in Salt, Mackenzie leaves a message for Gabe wondering if he’s coming into work and where they left things. Dean comes in and Mackenzie tells him Gabe tends to bail when things get real. Dean says there’s something she needs to know. At the farm house, Ziggy takes notes as Marilyn tells her she needs bicarb soda and white wine vinegar for cleaning and asks what she uses in the laundry. Dean arrives and Marilyn gives them space. Ziggy talks about using cleaning products that they don’t know the ingredients of and plastic bottles. Dean thinks she’s being a bit extreme and declines to talk about what he’s been doing.
Mackenzie is staring into the distance as Gabe arrives at Salt. He tells her that they’re not on the same page about moving in together and he thinks they should call it quits. He adds he doesn’t know what else to say. Mackenzie says she knows about the cancer so they should start there.
