Extended Summary

Cash meets up with John in the street and admits he’s an idiot, explaining about the disastrous meeting between Felicity and Gary. He doesn’t know where Gary is, so John offers to help find him. Inside the house, Felicity complains about Cash ignoring her wishes. Tane says that she doesn’t have a lot of family left and wonders why she doesn’t want more. Felicity says some people are better off left in the past.

At the Diner, Roo suggests to Marilyn that they need to be more specific with their ideas, and Irene and Alf chime in on the subject of multiple post-it notes. Irene suggests they think about what they want to do: Help people get jobs, give them a break or raise money. Gary comes back in and Alf and Irene comment on him being back on his own. He says Cash is in the middle of something with Felicity. Meanwhile, Cash and John search the surf club. Cash says he was meant to meet Gary there. John quizzes him about Gary’s meeting with Flick, asking if she was civil. Cash says no before they go to search upstairs.

Marilyn reels off some of what they’ve come up with to Roo. Alf says it’s a long list and Roo says they’re good ideas. Alf suggests ringing the community kitchen to find out what they need. He rejoins Irene and Gary, as Gary tells a story about getting a call at the police station about a noise complaint from his own home. He found Felicity and half the town dancing in the barn, adding that Kath was away and Cash was stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Rose comes in and is introduced to Gary, who tells her to call him by his first name rather than “sir” as she initially did. He realises he has a message on his phone from Cash to meet at the surf club so he and Rose head down there.

As they walk, Rose asks Gary about working at a one-cop station. He asks her about working at Yabbie Creek and recalls Cash saying she wanted to be a detective. Rose says Cash has taught her that community policing can be just as rewarding. Gary asks what working with Cash has been like, especially lately. Rose says they’re coming out the other side of it.

Gary and Rose meet up with Cash and John at the surf club. John introduces himself before Cash can do so, talking about Neighbourhood Watch and how he’s seen Gary’s car outside his house. Cash apologises about before and Gary suggests they enjoy the catch-up. He invites Rose to join them. Cash is uncertain about going upstairs to Felicity’s restaurant so Rose invites them back to hers. Gary tells Cash he’s going to leave in the morning, since he’s upset Felicity enough.

At the Diner flat, Gary asks Rose how she’s handling the move from the city. Rose recalls Cash’s advice, which he turns out to have got from Gary. Gary wants to head back to the motel but Cash insists he stay for a feed. Gary comments on Felicity getting married before Cash, recalling how she used to sleep in the back of her dad’s ute, with Cash recalling Gary draping a blanket over her once.

Felicity arrives at the surf club with Tane, complaining about him walking her there. Tane asks if she’s changed her mind about Gary and Felicity sarcastically says she wants to involve him in wedding planning. John comes past and comments on meeting Gary, saying Cash must have got his country manners from him. Felicity complains about Cash sending out unwelcome invites. John says he knows what it’s like to be a foster father. Felicity retorts that he doesn’t know what it’s like to be a foster kid.

At the Diner, Roo gets off the phone and tells Alf, Irene and Marilyn what the community kitchen needs: Another food truck, so they don’t spend as much time travelling around. That means she and Marilyn need to do fundraising. John comes in and chats to Irene about his run-in with Felicity, and Cash’s disastrous reunion.

Tane is propping up the bar in Salt. Felicity complains about him watching her and he tells her not to take it out on him. Felicity apologises but refuses to discuss it. Cash comes in to collect a takeaway. He tells Felicity she’s won again and Gary’s leaving. Felicity reminds him he knows how she feels and asks if he invited Gary for her or for himself. Cash walks out without saying anything else. Tane follows Cash out and says Cash must have known it would blow up in his face, adding that he’s tried to talk to Felicity. He asks how Gary is. Cash says he’s fine and that’s the problem: Gary’s always fine, whatever Felicity does.

Tane heads back upstairs, where Felicity is cleaning tables on the balcony. She says she thought he’d left and apologises. Tane asks her to explain. Felicity says Gary was her dad’s best friend and he took her in. She was angry about losing both her parents and used to stay awake wondering how to bring her dad back. Gary and Kath gave them a home and love and support but she kept running away and eventually took Cash with her after giving him an ultimatum. She never thought how it affected Gary, who’d lost his friend. She suspects he and Kath wanted to look after her for her dad. Tane encourages her to fix it, even though she thinks it’s too late.

At the Diner flat, Rose asks Gary about working by himself and if he ever wanted something different. Cash laughs at the idea but Gary says he was once offered a promotion in the city as a detective in homicide but the timing was off. Cash realises he turned it down to look after Flick and him. Gary says he’d do it all again.

John absent-mindedly holds his plate out to Irene, who offers him another slice of cake. Marilyn protests that Ryder and Chloe’s truck didn’t cost $40,000. Roo reminds her that Ziggy got them theirs for free and this one needs fitting out. John offers help with fundraising and Irene says the real help would be a hefty donation. John protests they haven’t sorted out what they’re doing yet. Marilyn says it’s something that should involve everyone.

Felicity is sat outside by the pool. Cash brings her a blanket. Felicity says she’s treated him badly today. Cash says he shouldn’t have sprung Gary on her. He tells her about Gary turning down a promotion. Felicity asks if he’s trying to guilt trip her into seeing Gary and he admits he is. He says she was right about him doing it for herself: He wants things to be good between her and Gary, because he’s all they have left. He asks her to try for him.

Next morning, Rose arrives at the Diner first thing and asks Irene if she’s too early for a coffee. She talks about spending the previous night with Cash and Gary, saying Gary’s made her think about what she wants with her career and that she’s going to talk to her sergeant about it. She wonders if she might make a difference there.

At the Parata house, Felicity blathers to Tane about not having any scones for Gary. Tane tries to distract her by asking her about her trip to the wedding dress shop with Eden. Cash and Gary arrive and Gary awkwardly announces that he’s there.
