Ziggy accuses Justin of discrimination. Logan investigates Martha for Roo. Could Mackenzie lose Salt?
Extended Summary
Mackenzie and Logan meet up near the beach. Logan was called out to an emergency at 3am. They consider going for breakfast but Mackenzie has to get to work. John appears and hands over the mail from Salt, noting it’s mostly bills, and mentions going to visit Jett. Back at the garage, Ziggy tells Justin that Theo faked a headache to get out of working with her and also mentions him filming a challenge at the garage. Justin points out she took part in it and gives her a sceptical look when she says she doesn’t bite his head off. Ziggy says they should advertise and there are loads of females out there who’d want the job. Justin says none have sent him CVs and Theo is family, pointing out he hired her, a female, because she was Brody’s girlfriend.
At the Diner, Irene comments to Marilyn on how good it is to have her back. Roo comes in and complains about Alf banning her from seeing Martha unless she agrees not to talk about the operation. He also hasn’t told her what Martha’s condition is. Logan comes in looking for breakfast but instead Roo grabs him and takes him upstairs. She says she rang Martha’s doctor and they wouldn’t give her information but they might tell Logan.
Ryder shows Mackenzie his new cocktail, the Graduate, and admits one of the ingredients is a bit expensive. Mackenzie says they’ll just charge more for it and to arrange new menus. She opens a letter but looks disappointed at the contents. Downstairs, John convinces Alf that the surf club won’t fall apart just because they’re both away at the same time and Gerald has his number if there’s an emergency. He also says to give Martha his best. He spots Dean and asks him about the Paratas’ crowdfunding. Ziggy comes in, complaining about men, and John quickly retreats. Ziggy tells Dean about Justin hiring Theo. Dean thinks it’s fair enough when he’s family but Ziggy insists she’s going to do something about it. Dean quietly wishes Justin luck…but denies it when Ziggy asks.
Up in Salt, Mackenzie is on the phone and tells someone to get their supervisor to call her back. Ryder approaches her with a new cocktail, the Boss, named after her but Mackenzie hates it and also tells him not to order new menus after all. Dean comes up and asks for a beer but Mackenzie refuses to serve him unless he pays. Ryder comments that he’s gone from golden to dirt. Meanwhile, Logan gets off the phone and tells Roo that Martha’s dialysis isn’t being as effective. Also, the damage to her kidneys has caused her heart problems. Roo asks if she’s going to die and Logan admits it’s a possibility.
Dean has followed Mackenzie onto the balcony at Salt. She says she’s sick of freeloaders, not just him but Bella and Ziggy, expecting free food and drink and rent and the loan she gave him to start up the surf school. Dean protests that she insisted on doing that. Mackenzie says the line between being generous and being taken advantage of has been crossed. At the flat, Logan has just finished microwaving a burger when Dean arrives and asks what’s going on with Mackenzie, saying she bit Ryder’s head off. Logan can’t think of anything other than Ari and running into John Palmer. Dean manages to cadge the burger off him.
At the Diner, John talks to Marilyn about how she seems better and how he’s going to visit Jett. Ziggy presents Justin with a set of CVs from her friends. Justin says the position’s filled. John thinks giving it to Theo’s a good idea and Ziggy gets Irene to chip in on women and career opportunities. Ziggy tries to get John to give judgement as the building owner. John is keen to stay out of it but thinks Theo getting a job is a good thing. Justin takes Ziggy for a walk, saying that Theo is family and he’s hoping to give him a reason to stick around and for it to become a family business. Ziggy asks where that leaves her and Justin says that he considers her family. Ziggy accepts it but says she’s leaving the CVs on file just in case.
Roo finds Alf at the surf club and asks why he didn’t tell her about Martha’s heart problems. Alf admits that he hasn’t talked about it because he’s scared. Roo says she is too. Not too far away, John says his goodbyes to Dean and Ziggy, with Ziggy assuring him she sorted things out with Justin. Up in Salt, Logan collects a pizza. Ryder says that it will be $20 and Mackenzie says that Logan doesn’t need to pay, also asking Ryder to bring them a sample of the Boss, which she now claims to love. Logan is surprised to find her upbeat, saying he heard she was in a bad mood. After he’s gone, Mackenzie asks Ryder if he snitched on her. Ryder replies that he values his life.
At the Diner, Irene serves Alf and Roo. Alf still refuses to let Roo talk about the transplant to Martha, despite her reminding him that not so long ago he admitted that he was wrong to not encourage Martha. He doesn’t want to force her into it and tells Roo not to go if she can’t do the same. Roo tries to get him to sleep on it but Alf wants to get back to Martha as quickly as he can. Not long after, Marilyn is giving Alf some farewell treats. Irene says a quick goodbye to him and Roo tells him to call her if Martha gets worse. Alf drives off.
Dean arrives back at the board shop to find Mackenzie sitting there. She accuses him of sticking his nose in by talking to Logan and storms off. Dean follows her upstairs but she disappears into the store room to take a phone call. Dean and Ryder are both confused. Mackenzie protests the insurance company’s claim that her policy doesn’t cover gas attacks, saying that she lost business and had to throw out thousands of dollars of food. She puts the phone down and bursts into tears. Dean comes in and she tells him she’s broke. She admits that even before the poisoning, she lost business when she was closing the place after the miscarriage and burned through her savings. She was counting on the insurance. Dean tries to get her to talk to Logan but Mackenzie refuses. She tells a passing Ryder she’s leaving him in charge. Dean insists on paying for his beer and tries to encourage Mackenzie to tell Logan.
