Cash bears bad news for Jasmine. Roo takes her last chance with Martha. Dean’s rescue plan for Mackenzie turns sour.
Extended Summary
Cash and Jasmine are making a meal at home. Jasmine tastes Cash’s cooking and suggests it could use more salt. Irene enters and they ask her for the casting vote. Irene is happy to see them making themselves at home and doesn’t even mind the mess they’ve made of the kitchen, although when she does the tasting she admits it could maybe use a bit of salt. At the Diner flat, Logan is setting the table for a romantic meal. Mackenzie steals herself before entering, putting on a smile. Logan guesses she knows he was talking to Dean and assures her they don’t do it often. Mackenzie blows out the candles and says she brought “dessert”, gesturing to herself. They kiss and head to the bedroom.
Next morning, Cash and Jasmine are on the beach together. Jasmine takes a selfie to commemorate their first run together and Cash wonders if he’ll get in trouble if he doesn’t buy her a present on the anniversary. They prepare to race but Cash rushes off early with Jasmine chasing after him. Back at the beach house, Roo has called round to see Irene and notes she got a text from Alf saying he’d got there safely and has also heard Martha had a rough night. She wishes she’d had more time with her. Irene asks why she’s talking as if Martha’s already gone. Roo says that’s how it feels.
Mackenzie is working on spreadsheets on her laptop. Logan appears and tries to convince her to come back to bed. Mackenzie closes the laptop, saying it was just bills. Ryder arrives at that moment and says he wanted to talk to Mackenzie about the new roster she e-mailed him. Mackenzie says they’ll talk on the way to Salt. As they walk, Ryder explains he has less hours than normal, meaning he’ll earn less than before the pay rise. Mackenzie says she needs to be more efficient and is fine with him looking for casual work elsewhere. She send him to open Salt while going to talk to Dean, explaining she’s had to cut her staff’s hours. Dean says if she isn’t going to ask Logan for help, there is someone else. Mackenzie realises he means Rick and refuses.
Cash finishes the race. Jasmine says he could have been a gentleman and faked a trip so she could win. Cash says he respects her too much to do that and points out he’s got longer legs than her. He tries to take a photo of them together. Jasmine pretends to be upset before relaxing and saying she’ll race him home, dashing off. Meanwhile, Irene and Roo are walking near the beach, discussing the situation with Martha. Logan comes up and apologises for breaking bad news. Roo is uncertain how she can talk to Martha without mentioning the surgery. Irene reminds her she spoke to Martha on the phone before and both she and Logan encourage her to try again.
Dean and Mackenzie arrive at the surf club. Dean is still trying to get Mackenzie to call Rick but Mackenzie says he’d just rub her face in it and she’ll come up with another plan. She heads upstairs and asks Ryder about lunch bookings. He says they’re a quarter full but always get walk-ins. Mackenzie tells him she’s cutting the cocktail menu, calling it a business decision. Ryder protests but she just tells him he can go home since they’re quiet and to put some boxes away first. Ryder goes into the store room and finds the discarded letter turning down the insurance payout.
Cash says goodbye to Jasmine before heading off to his shift. She checks his temperature and says he’s a bit hot so should stay home and go to bed. She kisses him passionately but he says to hold that thought until he gets back. Meanwhile, Dean and Ryder are discussing Mackenzie’s money problems near the beach. Dean asks if suppliers are getting paid and Ryder recalls one of them having a go at him. He wonders if he should check the accounts. Dean is surprised he can do that and Ryder explains Mackenzie gave him access in case she was out of action.
At the farm house, Ryder uses the password to access the accounts so he and Dean can have a look. He is shocked at how bad things are: The suppliers haven’t been paid in weeks, with only wages being covered, and Mackenzie has a huge overdraft with massive interest. He panics that Mackenzie will have to close down and he’ll be out of a job, saying only a miracle or a lottery could save her now. After Ryder’s gone, Dean calls Rick but only manages to say that Mackenzie needs help before he hangs up on him. At the Diner, Irene is still encouraging Roo to call Martha, with Marilyn also chiming in. Ryder joins them and reminds Roo what she said to him when Evan was dying about it being the only thing he could control. Roo makes the call.
Mackenzie is making a phone call at the flat, failing to convince the bank to extend her credit. Logan arrives and she tells him she’s delegating at work. They are interrupted by a call from Rick, which Mackenzie reluctantly answers. She storms round to the farm house and has a go at Dean for ignoring what she said and informing him. She says he mocked her for the business failing and giving away the Porsche and the only help he offered was to buy Salt at a low price, which she refused.
Cash arrives back at the house but tells Jasmine he’s there on official business: They had a call from a solicitor at the station saying her father died two weeks ago. He offers to stay with her but Jasmine reminds him she hasn’t seen her father since he abandoned her at school when she was six and says she doesn’t feel anything. They walk along the beach. Cash encourages her to have a reaction but Jasmine says she didn’t have a relationship with her father. They briefly chat to Irene before Jasmine heads to the Diner. Cash tells Irene the situation and asks her to keep an eye on Jasmine.
