Colby finally makes a significant breakthrough with Bella. What is Alf hiding from Roo? Mason places his whole future in jeopardy.

Extended Summary

Bella is pestering Colby at work, looking for a taser and playing around with a stapler. Colby tells her to do her homework and she says she’s already done it. Colby tells her to read then. Bella instead looks at the police database over his shoulder and reads in a file that it’s illegal to hold someone against their will. Colby threatens to handcuff her to a chair. At the Morgan house, Mason notes Raffy’s results are good but admits he’s low on cannabis oil. Raffy is worried since she has assignments coming up. Mason says he’ll buy marijuana in bulk and get a good stock of oil. He gets an e-mail saying a position at Northern District Hospital has become open again and inviting him to reapply.

Ben and Dean have finished a surf on the beach with Ben noting Dean put in a good showing despite his recent injuries. Dean asks about Ziggy and Ben says Dean made a good call with the car since she’s focusing on that instead of partying. Dean gets a call from Bella and is shocked to hear where she is. At the Diner, Alf comes in to be greeted by Marilyn, Ben and Maggie. Marilyn says the trip obviously agreed with him. Ben and Maggie are pleased to see him but have to go to work. Alf asks Marilyn about Jett and she says he’s a fighter and is making the best of it. Alf wonders if Roo knows Martha was in town. Marilyn says she does but hasn’t given her any details. Alf gets a call from Martha but hides the screen from Marilyn and ignores it.

Dean arrives at the police station and is surprised to see Colby there, asking what’s going on and if Bella’s been arrested. It becomes clear Bella told him the police wouldn’t let her leave and Bella faux-innocently says it’s not her fault he got the wrong end of the stick. They retreat into an office. Dean is more amused than anything by Bella’s antics, agreeing with her saying he and Colby used to get into trouble. Bella starts to say Colby isn’t her dad; Colby invites her to finish and she does, adding he used to bully her too. Dean steps in, saying he’ll take Bella and that Colby isn’t handling it. At the caravan park, Ryder chats to Raffy about Alf being back and wonders if he knows about Leah and Justin. Raffy says the signs were there and Ryder is amused that she was secretly shipping them. Raffy wonders if they should call for Bella and Ryder explains about her suspension. Raffy admits she’s pleased; she agrees Bella’s fun but says she doesn’t get any study done when she’s around.

Up at the house, Alf is about to phone Martha when Raffy and Ryder come in; they explain it’s lunchtime and Ryder jokes that he wanted to hang out with his favourite relative but Roo isn’t there. Alf is abrupt as they ask about his trip and try to tell him about Leah, suggesting they study outside. When they say they want food, he gives them an armful and sends them on their way. He then calls Martha and says he’ll do it soon and her calling every five minutes doesn’t help. Outside, Dean and Bella have sat outside his caravan. Dean recalls he set the fire alarm off at school once and Bella says that’s what gave her the idea. Dean notes he hated school as well; Bella says Simone was the only person that made it okay and thinks it’s a waste of time. Seeing Raffy and Ryder, she goes to join them with Dean doing nothing to stop her. Ryder quietly assures Raffy he’ll handle things. As Bella celebrates her freedom, Raffy says she has to go home and get a book. Bella tries to go with her but Ryder convinces her to stay with him.

Roo and Maggie go into the Diner and meet Marilyn. Roo confirms she was meant to be meeting Alf but says he wasn’t answering his phone. Mason approaches Maggie and tells her about the opening at Northern Districts, asking her to be a personal reference if he decides to apply. Maggie thinks he should, saying he’s committed to his patients. Mason heads home and encounters Raffy, who says she has two minutes to talk to him. Mason tells her he applied for the position and has got an interview next week. Raffy is pleased, saying she wishes she could tell them how much he’s helped her. After he’s gone, Mason calls someone and arranges a purchase that afternoon.

Dean joins Colby at the police station, telling him that Bella’s with her friends and he needs to stop screwing things up. He says he knows what it’s like to be the dumb kid at school, just wanting to spend time with your friends, and Colby needs to stop the tough love so Bella listens to him when it counts… although he has no idea how to do that. Meanwhile, Bella is trying to get Ryder to skip school, even though he has digital media, the only subject he likes. Colby arrives and sends Ryder to school. Bella comments on him scaring off her friends and Colby apologises and asks for a calm discussion. Bella says he’s not like Ross but that he and Dean weren’t any good at school. Colby asks what she wants and Bella says she wants to fit in. Colby suggests acting out is stopping her doing that and Bella admits it’s boring with her friends at school.

Colby and Bella meet Maggie and Roo at Salt. Bella apologises for the graffiti, the fire alarm and her attitude. Maggie points out they’ve been here before and Roo says she needs to meet them halfway. Colby thinks the reality of the suspension is starting to sink in and Bella says she can’t promise she won’t stuff up again but she’ll try. They head downstairs with Roo saying she and Bella will have a tutoring session once she’s back at school. Dean jokes about Colby and Bella not arguing. Ben tells Maggie he’s had seven texts from Ziggy asking him to let Dean go early to help on the car. Ben says it’s up to Dean, who notes he’s prepared to take one for the team.

Roo arrives home and meets Alf, wondering why his phone was switched off. She starts to talk to him about the Kimberleys and Leah but Alf interrupts and Roo wonders what’s wrong. Martha enters and says nothing is. Roo is pleased to see her but confused. Alf admits he was meant to tell her and waffles about how things happen that you don’t expect. Martha announces that they’re seeing each other. Meanwhile, Mason drives out into the bush and retrieves a bag of marijuana from under a drum, putting it in his bag. Suddenly, a police car pulls up behind his vehicle and a detective approaches.
