Extended Summary

Mali finishes off a class on the beach. Mackenzie appears and checks he hasn’t had dizziness or nausea. He assures her he hasn’t and both are relieved that she can now stop taking the surf lessons. Back at the Diner flat, Xander is unhappy about what Rose is doing, thinking she should talk to their mum. Rose points out their mum refused to discuss it but Xander thinks that should be the end of it. Rose says she has a right to know about her father. Xander asks what about the man who raised her. Rose agrees he was a good dad but says she needs some air.

Cash and Harper have gone back to his place and Harper notes it’s a step-up from where he used to live. She asks if Cash remembers her sister Dana. Cash remembers Harper saying she was a great nurse. Harper admits Dana’s on the run with a warrant out for her arrest but stresses she’s innocent: Drugs were found in her apartment and her boyfriend Olly said they were hers. She’s lost her job and her reputation.

At the surf club, Mali tells Mackenzie he can start work on the board she wanted. Mackenzie says it was for Kirby but they might have to put it on ice for now. Mali asks her about arranging something special for Rose at Salt. Rose then turns up and Mali starts to tell her his plans.

At the Diner, Irene talks to Leah about how John found out Harper and Cash are friends. Leah is distracted and explains she’s thinking about Justin and Theo and all the problems with the band. She suggests she and Irene go to Salt but Irene admits she’s already arranged to have dinner with Harper for her first night.

Cash wonders what Harper thinks he can do. Harper thinks Cash can help prove Dana’s innocence, since he always pushes for the truth. She says none of the officers on the case listen to her, saying she’s not accepting the truth. Cash says Dana needs to give her side but Harper says she already has and they didn’t listen. Cash still doesn’t think he can do anything and Harper leaves disappointed.

Mackenzie leads Mali and Rose out onto the balcony at Salt. Rose notes they were meant to be celebrating Mali. Mali replies that Rose has helped him a lot the past few weeks. He acknowledges Mackenzie has as well but she declines to join them. Xander then appears and tells Rose he can’t just stand by so either she tells their mum or he does. He refuses to drop the matter so Rose ends up leaving.

Mali follows Rose down to the beach, asking if she’s going to tell him what’s going on and saying he’ll ask Xander otherwise. Rose isn’t happy about another ultimatum but explains she’s looking for her biological father. Mali is understanding. Rose explains that Xander sees it as betraying their dad. Mali says that Xander loves her but can’t see her perspective.

Mackenzie asks if it’s really wrong for Rose to want to know about her dad. Xander insists that they had a dad and thinks Rose is trying to replace him. He isn’t curious about why their mum doesn’t want Rose to know. Mackenzie suggests it’s between them. Xander wonders if he can just sit back and not get involved. Mackenzie suggests he wait and see what Rose finds out.

Back at the Diner flat, Mali gets Rose a cup of tea. She notes that she occasionally thought about her biological dad when she was younger but mostly didn’t need to. She thinks Mali couldn’t understand that. Mali can understand that it’s hard not knowing where you came from. Rose agrees.

Irene continues to chat to Leah about Harper. Harper shows up and is introduced to Leah. She seems slightly suspicious that they were talking about her. Irene wonders why she seems out of sorts and Harper claims she got a call from work. Cash then appears wanting to talk to Harper. Irene tells her he’s one of the good ones. Cash and Harper walk by the beach. Harper notes that she should have expected this, since Cash only ever wanted to help if it was on the right side of the law. Cash says she’s reminded him of the sort of cop he wanted to be. He says he’ll look at the case and the arrest warrant.

Out on the balcony at Salt, Mackenzie continues to assure Xander that he won’t lose Rose. Mali turns up looking for a pizza and tells Xander that he doesn’t understand what Rose is going through with not knowing where she came from. Xander insists they had the same family and parents. Mali says Rose needs his support. He heads back to the flat with food for Rose. Rose has found the uni website on her laptop but there’s hundreds of photos to go through. Mali reminds her that Yvette was into drama, suggesting she looks for drama groups and plays.

Back at the Diner, Cash quizzes Harper about Olly. Harper says she never knew what Dana saw in him and insists she doesn’t have any idea where Dana is. Irene comes over and mentions that Cash used to lodge with her. Later, Irene and Harper are clearing up after a meal at home. Harper convinces Irene she’ll do it, sending her off to bed. She then goes to her room with a box of leftovers, where she quietly calls to Dana out of the window. Dana clambers in with a bag and quickly starts tucking into the food, to Harper’s frustration.

Mali asks who put an empty ice cream container in the freezer and Rose says not her or Bree. Mali is about to go down to the Diner when Rose beckons him over. She’s found a photo of her mum and the only black man pictured is Samuel Edwards, the senior lecturer who directed the play. She thinks he could be her father.

Dana sneaks from the bathroom back to the bedroom and gets Harper to move over in the bed. Harper tells her not to go to the lounge or kitchen unless she’s sure Irene’s out. Dana asks if they can trust Cash. Harper says Irene’s lovely and she’s hardly there during the day. Dana isn’t happy about having to hide in her room like a fugitive. Harper points out she is a fugitive. She assures her Cash will sort them but looks less certain when she turns away.
