Extended Summary

Xander joins Mali on the beach and asks if he’s sure he’s ready. Mali says the doctor told him he is. He goes rushing out into the water with his board and successfully surfs. By the coffee cart, Cash rejoins Rose. They are approached by John, who asks if they’re on duty. Cash says they’ve just clocked off but asks if everything’s all right. John wanders off looking for Irene. Cash and Rose discuss how it helps to take action, before the conversation drifts off to Rose making cryptic comments and Cash wondering what she’s thinking about. She explains she wants to find her biological father.

Mali is showering off near the surf club before going over to celebrate with Xander and saying he isn’t going to wait that long between surfs again. Xander suspects he didn’t invite Rose along because he was worried it would go badly. At the beach house, John turns up asking to talk to Irene about “that woman”. Irene guesses he means Harper. She starts making two cups of tea and tells John it’s not for him. Harper appears, asking if she can do some laundry. Irene tells John that Harper’s her new housemate.

Mali is finishing off a phone call at the surf club and tells Xander he’ll be taking over the surf lessons from now on, thanking him for covering. Xander questions him about what’s going on with Rose, saying she’s been acting oddly since they met with his mum. Back at the coffee cart, Rose tells Cash that meeting Mali’s family underlined that she doesn’t know anything about her own heritage. She doesn’t even know her father’s name and didn’t ask her mum until last week, since she always got angry when people asked about her and Xander looking different. She ignores a call from Mali, before asking Cash how he’d feel. Cash admits he’d want answers.

Outside the surf club, Mali leaves Rose a phone message asking her to call him. Near the beach, Rose receives an alert but tells Cash she’ll call Mali back later. She is reluctant to talk to him or Xander about what she’s doing because they’d have their own opinions. However, she’s not sure what she can do without her mother’s help. Cash suggests she approaches it like a cop, asking when she was born and what her mother was doing nine months earlier.

Irene and John are walking in a park area. Irene dismisses John’s concerns about Harper being nervous around the police. John wants her to throw Harper out. Irene says both of them have checked her out and she’s made her decision. Back at the Diner flat, Rose tells Cash that her mum dropped out of uni when she fell pregnant: She knows the uni but not who her friends were or what she studied. She worries if her father doesn’t want to meet her. Cash gets a call from John asking to discuss a delicate matter. He tells Rose that his foster father used to have a saying: If you’ve got to make a choice, go with what seems hardest because it’s probably right. Rose does a search for “Yvette Sanderson”.

Xander finds Mali at Salt and wonders why he’s not out celebrating. Mali says Rose never got back to him. He wonders what Xander thought about Rose’s mood and if he upset her without knowing. They head back to the Diner flat where Rose explains her silence by saying she needs to do some incident reports. Mali tells her about surfing for the first time since getting the doctor’s okay. Rose is quick to congratulate him and assures him she was fine with his mum.

Near the coffee cart, John is talking to Cash about Irene’s new lodger. Cash says it doesn’t sound like she’s done anything wrong. John wants him to do a police check but Cash says that’s illegal without cause. Irene comes over, realising what they’re talking about, as Cash suggests they could get her permission for a check. John sees Harper approaching and tells Irene to watch her reaction. Instead, Cash and Harper greet each other by name and hug. Irene laughingly agrees that’s an interesting reaction.

Later, Cash and Harper walk on the beach and Cash says John’s okay when you get to know him. Harper recalls that Cash was excited when he got the job. Cash says it hasn’t quite worked out as he was expecting and they discuss how they used to work together.

Irene brings John a pie at the Diner and suggests his worrying made his hungry and maybe they should have dinner with Harper and Cash. John asks how long she’s going to rub his face in it before admitting he overreacted. Irene says she’s a better judge of character from him. John says you can’t make a blanket statement like that before admitting she was right this time. Meanwhile, in a park area, Cash asks Harper why she’s in Summer Bay, since he thought she’d never leave the city. Harper admits he came here looking for her and has a favour to ask.

Xander tells Rose that he knows she’s not allowed to do reports at home and that she’s a terrible liar, adding that she doesn’t have to tell him. Rose says that she’s looking for her father. She says all she’s found is clubs their mother was involved with and wonders if Xander knows more. Xander asks why she’s doing this, since she’s never been curious before. Rose says she has. Xander insists they had a dad. Rose replies that he had a dad and she had a huge question mark.
