Extended Summary

John runs into Nikau on the beach and gives him some water. Moments later, Heather appears and comments on having sun, sand and a hot lifeguard. John reminds Nikau he’s meant to be patrolling. He thanks Heather for not pressing charges against Marilyn. Heather says Marilyn’s lucky to have so many good friends. John says she’s his ex-wife, surprising Heather who didn’t know Marilyn had been married. John passes Dean, who is texting Ziggy.

However, Ziggy is still lying unconscious as the text comes in. Tane pulls up and finds her beginning to come round. He offers to call an ambulance but Ziggy says she just needs fresh air. She goes outside and throws up, then remembers the smell of chemicals and worries she’s hurt the baby. Meanwhile, Alf and Roo see Marilyn knocking on the door of Heather’s van. Alf reminds her she’s banned and asks what’s going on.

At the surf club, John asks Dean about manning the nippers’ barbie and takes his glare as a hard no. Dean gets a call from Tane and says he has to go. John sarcastically says he’ll close up for him. Heather appears and jokes about distracting Nikau again. John says Nikau can go when he’s finished what he’s doing. Heather is still surprised about John being married to Marilyn. Nikau diplomatically says it’s because they’re so different and John says opposites attract. Heather expresses surprise that they’re still friends and John says they share a son. Heather realises he means Jett. John asks how she knew that and Heather says Marilyn mentioned him once.

Marilyn insists to Alf and Roo that things have changed with Heather: They had a conversation and fixed things. She says Heather’s interested in tarot so she said she’d lend her a book. Alf and Roo aren’t convinced so Marilyn says to ask Heather. Later, at the Diner, Irene asks Marilyn to take a sandwich to Roo. Marilyn is nervous about the fact that Roo’s meeting Heather. Heather turns up and Roo asks about her application. Marilyn asks Heather to confirm she asked to borrow the book. Heather acts as though she knows nothing about it and says she wouldn’t buy into that rubbish.

At the farm house, Ziggy is on the phone to a nurse and is relieved to hear everything’s all right. Tane asks if Dean knows she’s pregnant. Ziggy says he does, and so do her parents and Mack, but they’re not really telling people yet. Tane asks if it’s what she wants and congratulates her when she says it is. Later, Tane stays with Ziggy until Dean arrives back. Tane explains about her fainting and about his car needing a service, which Ziggy says she’ll get onto. Tane congratulates Dean as he leaves. Dean is surprised Ziggy told him and she says it just came out. Dean is fine with it.

Irene tells Marilyn to stop hiding away in the kitchen. Marilyn dismisses what happened as a misunderstanding. Heather calls an end to the session, telling Roo she’s not in the right head space. Alf turns up as she leaves and Roo tells him Marilyn was lying. Alf tries to get answers from Marilyn, who now claims the book was an olive branch. Alf tells her to steer clear of Heather.

At the farm house, Ziggy assures Dean she can make her own sandwich. Dean thinks Tane should have taken her to hospital. Ziggy says she’ll go in if she feels ill again. Dean still thinks she should tell Justin. Ziggy insists they’ll make it work. Dean says they should keep their phones in reach and she should stay away from chemicals at work. Ziggy agrees.

Irene and John are eating at Salt. Irene tells him about Marilyn and the book and says Heather gets under Marilyn’s skin. John is suspicious of Heather, saying she was interested in him when she found out he was married to Marilyn and mentioned Jett by name. Irene points out Jett’s name isn’t a secret. John suggests Heather sent Jett the message and points out Heather knows everything about them and they know nothing about her.

Marilyn knocks on Heather’s van and asks to talk to her. They go for a short walk and Marilyn asks why Heather didn’t back her up over the book. Heather says she thought that was what Marilyn wanted her to say since she wanted their connection kept secret, arguing that Marilyn made the rules and she’s just following them.

At the Parata house, Nikau has made food but Tane is reluctant to join him. Tane asks about Nikau’s day. Nikau says he hung with Heather and thinks he likes her. Tane asks if there’s a future for them and Nikau says he hopes so. Nikau wonders about Tane’s mood. Tane says he’s wondering what’s next and the gym was just part of it.

Next morning, Irene asks Marilyn how she slept. Heather comes in and orders a coffee. John also appears and asks Marilyn if she’s heard from Jett. Marilyn realises she has a message from him. John says he’s been nominated for an award for services to veterans’ care. Heather listens in, quietly seething, and offers congratulations with a forced smile. John notices her hostile look after Marilyn’s gone.

Dean brings Ziggy some vegemite toast and she says she’ll have it later. She complains no-one tells you how tiring it is to have a baby. Dean produces a parcel from Ben and Maggie. It’s a pregnancy care package containing tired eye cream, stretch mark cream and earplugs for Dean, since Maggie snored while pregnant.

Nikau runs into Heather at the surf club. John passes and reminds Nikau he needs to be on the beach. Heather wonders if he’s like that with everyone. Nikau says he’s harmless and leaves. In the office, John tries to look Heather up on the computer but she comes in and asks what he’s doing. Meanwhile, Tane is clearing up from a class on the beach when Dean and Ziggy appear. Dean goes to set up for the surf school, telling Ziggy not to move. Tane admits he’s been reflecting on wanting a family, which Felicity doesn’t.

Up in Salt, Heather buys John a drink and suggests some people are making it hard for her to fit into town, saying he must want to know something to look her up. John asks about her obsession with Marilyn. Heather argues it was Marilyn that broke into her van. John says Marilyn wouldn’t do that without a reason and accuses her of sending Jett the message. Heather denies it and asks why would she. John says she’s messing with Marilyn’s head and he’s going to find out why.
