Remi opens up to Bree. Dana’s nerves peak ahead of Tane’s trial.

Extended Summary

Dana is standing by the beach, watching as people take photos and selfies of Stevie’s memorial. Xander joins her and she notes on any other day she’d have been there. Xander is glad she wasn’t. Dana says instead she was at the court house waiting to give evidence against Tane, which she now has to psych herself up for again. Xander offers her a coffee but she decides to stay there for a bit.

Remi is telling Bree she should be supporting her boyfriend, since he was friends with Stevie. Bree says Eden told her about him having a go at Cash. Remi confirms he did. Bree wonders if that’s fair. Remi says Cash’s literal job was to protect Stevie. Bree says it must feel overwhelming. Remi tells her not to tell him how he feels, since he doesn’t know herself.

At Salt, Mackenzie and Levi discuss the number of customers. Levi says Tane’s back from hospital with no after-effects but still down about the court case tomorrow. Mackenzie asks if he’s heard from the board and Levi says these things take time. They kiss and Xander comments that he liked it better when they were a secret. He adds that he needs his boss to work, pointing to an upset-looking young woman in a Stevie t-shirt who has just come in and been given a hug.

At the Diner, Justin reads the news article to Leah, Marilyn and Theo, which refers to life echoing art and Wickham coming directly to Summer Bay to carry out his threat after the mistrial. Marilyn says the film brought such energy to the Bay. Justin says it was nice to be part of it while it lasted but even the good bits feel sad now. Theo suggests they go surfing and Justin agrees it might help them feel normal.

At the surf club, Alf angrily ends a phone call to a journalist, saying he hasn’t got a quote and to stop calling. John says they’ve been calling him as well and even approaching the lifesavers. Dana comes in and John tells her they’ll be busy tomorrow since they’re the only ones on shift: It’s business as usual but with more people, given Stevie’s fans are there. Dana says she can’t. John protests she’s been rostered on for ages. Dana just says she’s sorry and walks away while he’s fielding another call.

Down on the beach, Justin and Theo see the fans photographing themselves with the memorial and aren’t impressed. They also see someone wearing a t-shirt which has “RIP STEVIE” printed over the Death Throes poster. Justin decides they can’t just go out on the water as if nothing’s happened and they head back.

Remi remarks it was all new and they don’t know how it would have gone. Bree says there’s no rule book on how to feel. Remi recalls what Stevie said about being the sum of their exes and what Bree said about their relationship coming out of trauma. He says he never saw her as a victim like she did: He fell in love with a smart gorgeous woman (Bree quips that he just tried to pick one up) and learning what she’d gone through made him love her more. Bree kisses him but he pulls back after a moment. She apologises and hurries out.

At Salt, Dana is practising things to say in court, saying Tane was just doing what he thought was best for Maia (which she then corrects to Poppy) and was trying to protect an abandoned baby. Xander tells her she sounded confident. She asks for free cake. Xander points out they don’t really do cake and declines to make some. Bree comes in and asks for a vodka on ice, saying she’ll take it on the balcony. Mackenzie and Levi observe this and Levi takes the drink out to her. She says she overstepped with Remi and shouldn’t have been there because of Nelson. Levi understands juggling two people. Bree thinks she’s going to push them both away.

At the Diner, Alf tells Leah and Marilyn about the media being constantly on the blower and the steady stream of mourners by the crime scene on the beach. Marilyn says not to be too hard on them. Alf says some of them are fair dinkum but others are rubber-necking stickybeaks. Justin and Theo arrive and explain they didn’t go in the water. Alf notes the beach feels like a funeral parlour and wonders if anyone’s heard from Remi, saying he didn’t seem too good earlier.

Remi is playing the guitar at the house when Theo turns up. Theo mentions the tributes to Stevie and says it must be next level for Remi even though they’d broken up. Remi admits they got back together. Theo convinces him to come out for an hour and play pool.

As they walk towards the surf club, Theo notes he’s supposed to be saying something to cheer Remi up. He comments on him and Stevie getting back together. Remi says it was over before it started and they’ll never know where it could have gone. Bree comes over and asks to talk to Remi. Theo says he’ll be inside if Remi wants a coffee later. Bree says they need to talk about earlier.

They head to a park area where Remi notes Bree’s driving him crazy, turning up and kissing him. Bree say it was wrong and apologises. She says he was being lovely and acting like the Remi she fell in love with and that she still cares about him. Remi isn’t angry but reminds her she dumped him and moved on with Nelson, and thinks they should stay away from each other.

At Salt, Levi is telling Dana about his cardiothoracic proposal and says there might be a job for her with extra training. Dana isn’t really listening and admits to him and Mackenzie she keeps thinking about Tane and the court case and worries about being a witness for the prosecution. Mackenzie says the fact she’s Tane’s friend will shine through. Xander appears and he and Dana leave while Mackenzie worries.

Xander and Dana arrive back at the flat and he tells her to make herself at home while he gets changed, then notes she was quiet on the way there which isn’t like her. Dana says she’ll choose not to be offended by that and that she’s thinking about her part in things. Xander says she didn’t make Tane take the baby. Dana wonders why she let him onto the ward and left him alone and worries she’ll say something to make things worse. Xander reminds her how much rehearsing she’s done.

Next morning, Leah serves a smiling young man wearing an “RIP STEVIE” t-shirt. Alf comments to her on it. Leah calls it bad taste and that she’s seen a lot of them about, which Justin echoes. Alf calls them vultures. At the Diner, Marilyn serves Xander and Dana. Dana assures him she’s fine and even has her appetite back. After he’s gone, John comes in and comments on being understaffed. Seeing Dana, he asks if she cancelled her shift for a ladies’ lunch or day at the races. Dana starts crying and Marilyn steps in, explaining she’s testifying in court today. John apologises and tries to comfort her.
