Extended Summary
John is chatting to Nelson outside the surf club with Nelson asking for advice on where to film the Sunrise piece. John says anywhere on the beach would do but offers to give him a ride on the buggy to scout out locations. Nelson asks if the buggy’s for hire. John says it’s essential life-saving equipment, then hesitates and says he’ll see what he can do. Alf is on the phone to Roo when he sees them and complains to her. Up in Salt, Mackenzie tells Levi this isn’t the time to be having this conversation but asks if this “circuit breaker” is what he wants. Levi starts to answer, then his phone rings with a call from work. Mackenzie tells him to answer it, then goes into the store room and cries.
Down in the surf club, Mali asks Kirby if she’s keen to help out at the board shop. Kirby says it’s news to her and they realise Roo didn’t actually talk this over with either of them. However, Kirby isn’t against the idea. Mali gets texts with orders and explains to Kirby that he doesn’t have time to shape the boards with having to rearrange the classes around the film crew. Kirby is intrigued that the job mainly involves taking classes on the beach with the odd bit of shop work.
At the Diner, Marilyn notes it’s good to see Bree’s familiar face with all the film crew about. She asks if Bree has seen Stevie yet. Bree says she didn’t know Marilyn was a horror fan. Marilyn admits she’s only seen her in magazines. Bree gets a text from Nelson and adds a long black to the order. Alf and Roo come in. Alf comments on the lack of film crew. Roo thinks it’s good for the economy and mentions getting Kirby a job with Mali. Meanwhile, John brings Nelson back to the surf club and they discuss the shoot tomorrow. John suggests they go for a coffee but Nelson declines on seeing Bree approach. John withdraws and Bree gives Nelson his long black.
Kirby complains about the amount of paperwork she has to fill out when she’d rather be out on the water. Mali says if she goes out without the paperwork then he’ll have John and Alf on his back. Kirby asks how he’s coping with having Levi at the house all loved up with Mack. Mali says he’s used to it and Kirby realises Levi has been staying there some time.
Levi goes back to Mackenzie and says the phone call was from the registrar and they want him back at work. Mackenzie asks if he’s having second thoughts. Levi denies it but says this isn’t what either of them pictured when they imagined their future together. Later, John comes in and comments on Levi being a permanent fixture. Mackenzie says she’s not in the mood for anyone else having a go. John denies that’s why he’s there but admits Irene’s told him what’s going on. He says Levi being married isn’t ideal but he knows romance isn’t simple and she deserves to be happy. Mackenzie thanks him and offers him a coffee. He initially declines…until she says it’s on the house.
Bree and Nelson settle on a park bench. Bree jokes about him inviting John along. Nelson says he learned his lesson from getting Stevie and Remi to join them but surprises her by saying he finds John charming. Bree says she’s mostly at the hospital these days but they both have a night free. Later, Nelson is waiting at the Diner flat, on the phone to Stevie, and points out to her that the programme is called Sunrise, hence why it’s early. Bree joins him and Nelson asks her advice on somewhere to go.
Mackenzie joins Levi on the Salt balcony, where he has just finished a phone call. She apologises for overreacting and says the backlash is definitely worth it. Downstairs, Kirby is going over the lessons schedule with Mali. She again brings up the subject of Mackenzie and Levi on hearing Mali has his own shed to work in at home, saying Eden’s hurt and Imogen’s devastated. Mali loses his temper and storms out.
Kirby finds him on the beach and says she’s filled out the paperwork if she still has a job. Mali says they need some ground rules: When Kirby’s there, her head has to be on the job, because they’re responsible for people’s lives. He also says Mackenzie’s his friend. Kirby says she was hers too, and she’s known Levi since she was a teenager, but she’s looking out for Eden. Mali says they need to be professional while they’re at work.
Bree and Nelson are at the Diner. Marilyn comes over to ask if they’re ready to order, then hovers until Bree introduces her. Nelson tells her he’s the film’s director. Marilyn rushes to tell Roo, who says she doesn’t care. Nelson tells Bree he knows somewhere they can be private. John comes in and Nelson thanks him for his help and asks him to sign a release form, saying they want him to drive Stevie into shot on camera. Marilyn rushes to call Jett, while John is elated.
Outside the surf club, Mackenzie is saying goodbye to Levi, saying he has to get back to work and to call her when he gets to the hotel. Levi says he thought he was done with leaving her behind. Mackenzie says this time he’s coming back to her and she gets to call him. Not too far away, Nelson leads Bree to his motorbike. Bree wearily notes that of course he rides one. Nelson says she doesn’t have to get on but Bree decides to and they drive off.
At the Diner, John approaches Alf and Roo’s table and asks if Alf’s heard the good news. He explains he’s been asked to appear on Sunrise tomorrow. Alf drily asks if that means John won’t be able to do his patrol. John says he’ll be representing the surf club in uniform on national television. Marilyn chimes in that Jett’s organising a watch party with all his friends. Alf thinks they’ll never hear the end of it.
Nelson has driven Bree to a large isolated villa. He notes most people freak out their first time on a bike and Bree indicates it’s not her first time. She asks if he has the place to himself. Nelson says there’s not much accommodation in Summer Bay so he’s sharing it with Stevie, although she’s not there right now. He offers her a drink but Bree says she was thinking of something better. They passionately kiss.
