Mali’s overworked and under pressure. Mackenzie and Levi are shunned. Will Tane accept help?
Extended Summary
Mackenzie joins Levi on the beach after a surf and says she’ll get him to join her out there some time. Levi encourages her to go to Salt and face up to Felicity, offering to go with her for moral support. Mackenzie admits she’d rather go back to bed. They kiss as Justin comes past and gives them an awkward wave. Mackenzie notes at least it’s out there now.
At the surf club, Alf complains to Roo that the beach is meant to be for everyone. Roo says the film crew are just cordoning off parts of it temporarily but admits they want to use some of it for publicity in the morning. Alf wonders if that’s covered in their agreement with John. Roo goes over to Mali and tells him about the publicity event. Mali is annoyed since he’s meant to be having his biggest class, before people go into work: He can’t reschedule so is going to have to cancel. Felicity turns up and asks if Mali’s heard from Tane today and he abruptly says he hasn’t and is busy.
At the police station, Marshall argues to Rose that Tane turned up of his own volition without them having to send anyone after him. Rose says she gave him a chance to explain and he refused. Marshall eventually tells her that Tane found out his ex-wife is sleeping with someone else. Rose says that’s not really an excuse and it’s on Tane. Marshall asks if she wants to make things worse for him.
At the coffee cart, Leah and Kirby chat about Theo’s exam. Justin appears and asks if they’ve heard anything, before saying he just saw Mackenzie kissing her doctor. Kirby tells them that Levi’s married and left his wife for Mackenzie. Justin says they weren’t hiding it and seemed pretty loved-up. Leah asks if that makes it right. Kirby beats a hasty retreat as Justin struggles to defend himself.
Mackenzie and Levi turn up at Salt where Felicity is working. Mackenzie isn’t keen on approaching her. Levi says Felicity will learn everyone does the wrong thing sometimes. Mackenzie admits she gave Felicity a lecture when her marriage broke up and she thinks she’s a hypocrite. She approaches Felicity and says they need to work out a way to work together, suggesting they do the rosters. Felicity says she’s already done them and is taking her break.
Downstairs, Mali is calling to cancel the lesson and offer free make-up sessions. Felicity tries to ask him about Tane again but he says he’s still busy. Meanwhile, Rose gets Tane to sign the forms to get him released. She tells him to get out before Sarge turns up and reminds him he has to sign in every 72 hours: Not 73 or 76. Tane asks why she changed her mind and Rose says she wanted to get Marshall out of there.
On the balcony at Salt, Levi finishes a phone call and tells Mackenzie it was a friend cancelling a boys’ trip. He admits that it was probably because of his marriage break-up, given that the man’s wife is friends with Imogen. Mackenzie doesn’t think it’s fair their friends are taking sides and Levi points out she has Felicity and everyone else ganging up on her. Mackenzie complains that they didn’t kill anyone, just fell in love.
At the Diner, Kirby looks over Alf’s shoulder and says 3 down on his crossword is “engineer”. Alf asks if she’s got somewhere else to be and she says apparently not. Leah and Justin come in, with Leah refusing to take the afternoon off. Justin comments that he’s never going to spread gossip again, before following Leah into the kitchen. He says he knows cheating is a touchy subject for Leah since she’s been on the other side but it feels like she’s angry with him. Leah says she can’t believe a person she knows would do that. Justin assures her she’ll never have to go through that again.
Up in Salt, Mali asks Mackenzie if his order’s ready. While she’s checking, Mali sees Levi on the phone discussing a patient’s results. He wonders if it’s smart for Levi to be there, saying Felicity’s in a bad mood and everything’s raw. He suggests Levi take a break but Levi doesn’t want to leave Mackenzie on her own. Mali says don’t say he didn’t warn him.
Outside the surf club, Rose pulls up in the police car and meets Mali, who is heading home to get a board. Rose notes she’s had an interesting couple of shifts, telling him about Tane missing his check-in and spending a night in the cells. Mali asks why she didn’t tell him. Rose points out she’s telling him now but Mali walks off in a huff.
Inside, Tane asks Marshall what he said to Rose to get him out. Marshall calls it secret tools of the trade. Felicity comes in and thanks Marshall for changing his mind and helping. Tane bitterly notes of course she was involved and asks how many times he has to tell her to stay out of his life. He tells Marshall they’ll have the strategy meeting somewhere else.
Felicity exits the surf club with a box, nearly bumping into someone. She approaches Rose and asks what happened with Tane. Rose says Marshall talked some sense into him but refuses to discuss it further. Mali comes back and apologises to Rose, saying he’s stressed with work: The new orders are starting to get on top of him and he can’t see a solution other than rejecting them. Roo appears and explains Sunrise are doing a publicity event with the director and Stevie in the morning. She suggests they contact Mali in future but Mali says next time they can work around him. Rose explains about his problems.
Roo heads to the Diner and chats to Alf and Kirby about it. Justin comes in and tells Leah that Theo has finished his exam: He sent him a thumbs-up emoji and then went out with some friends. Kirby asks if Theo will be back to Lyrik soon and Justin says the hiatus has just started. Kirby admits she’s at a loose end: The songwriting well has run dry and there’s only so many times you can go surfing.
Sitting in a park, Marshall says they haven’t got a leg to stand on legally but have got character references, the motivation and Sonia’s support. Tane says they have Harper to thank for that and Marshall says he’s lucky to have good friends, before adding all Tane has to do is pick a suit. He asks if the Felicity thing’s going to be a problem and Tane says all he needs from Marshall is to keep him out of jail. He shakes his hand after a long pause and adds to keep Felicity out of it.
At Salt, Felicity is short with Mackenzie again. Despite Mackenzie’s warning, Levi goes after her and tells her to direct her anger at him, not Mackenzie. Felicity says she has enough anger for the two of them. Levi says Mackenzie shouldn’t have to deal with this in the workplace but Felicity firmly says they’re done. Mackenzie tells Levi that was incredibly sweet and very stupid. She tries to talk to Felicity herself but Felicity says she doesn’t want to talk to her.
Roo drags Kirby to the surf club and introduces her to Mali. They point out they know each other. Roo explains that Mali is overwhelmed at work and Kirby is a keen surfer with a lot of time on her hands, so maybe they could work something out. Upstairs, Levi suggests to Mackenzie that the two of them being in Felicity’s space isn’t helping and wonders if he should go back to the city to work. He asks if all this is worth it and says he’d understand if she wanted to walk away. Mackenzie looks shocked.
