Extended Summary

Justin and Theo are coming back from a surf on the beach. Justin tries to discuss the fact Theo has his final exam tomorrow but Theo doesn’t seem to want to talk about it, only giving curt answers. Justin warns him that graduating will mean more responsibility at work. Theo says one thing at a time. Meanwhile, Felicity and Marshall are walking by the surf club. Felicity admits that she still cares about Tane even though he’s her ex. Marshall checks she still only wants them to be a one-off. Harper appears looking for Tane and says Sonia has agreed to testify for him, which pleases the others. Felicity tells her she saw Tane in the gym but warns her he’s not in the best mood. Harper thinks he will be after this. Marshall tells Felicity that Tane just needs to keep turnng up.

Rose joins Tane in the police station interview room and tries to get a better answer for him being late than “I got caught up.” She asks if his car broke down or he was held up at work or sick. Tane refuses to say more and Rose says that if he won’t explain it to her, he’ll have to explain it to a magistrate. At Salt, Marshall explains to Felicity that they’re trying to make Tane appear sympathetic and having Sonia says she’s grateful to him for caring for her baby will help. Harper appears and says Tane isn’t at the gym or on the beach and isn’t answering his phone. Marshall gets a phone call that seems to answer that one.

At the Diner, Marilyn serves Alf his tea and apologises for the wait. Alf suggests she follow the example of the film crew and has that printed on a t-shirt. Justin and Theo arrive and Marilyn tells them that, with Irene away and the film crew there, there’s a thirty minute wait for food. Theo wants to leave but Justin says this is the advantage of being married to the co-owner and asks Leah if they can jump the queue. Leah agrees to get them two lasagnes and quietly asks Justin to keep an eye on Theo before Marilyn reminds her of the queue. Justin and Theo head home but Theo wants to take his food into his room and get on with studying. Justin tries to get him to sit and eat, saying he needs to find a balance. Theo says that’s what the surf was about and he knows how to pace himself.

Rose has summoned Marshall to the police station in the hope he can talk sense into Tane. Tane is unhappy when Marshall’s shown in. Marshall asks to speak with Tane alone and tells him missing his check-in looks bad. Tane says so does sleeping with his ex-wife. Marshall says neither of them knew who the other was but Tane argues that Marshall should have been working on his case and says he’s fired. Marshall says Tane’s an idiot if he thinks he doesn’t need him. As Tane gets more annoyed, Rose and another officer step in. Tane tells Rose to arrest him if she’s going to. She tells the other officer to take him to the cells to cool down. At the Diner, Leah gets an update from Justin about Theo on the phone. She chats to Alf about being worried about him, before Marilyn calls her back to work.

Tane is pacing in the cell. Rose comes in and asks him about firing his lawyer, reminding him he’s in court in a few weeks. Tane says it’s not him that his lawyer’s interested in but refuses to elaborate and eventually falls silent. Rose says it’s going to be a long night. At Salt, Felicity and Harper lament Tane making things difficult for himself. Marshall arrives and tells them Tane fired him, then goes to get a drink before explaining. Harper wonders what she’s missing. Felicity thinks she needs to go and talk to Tane. Harper thinks Tane won’t listen to them and they need to give him space to sort himself out. Felicity thinks that’s abandoning him.

Theo has moved to the living room table and Justin brings him chocolate biscuits. Theo says not to make him regret choosing to study out there. Justin say he’s 100% committed to helping and Theo asks him to listen to him, before giving in and asking Justin to quiz him on his notes. Meanwhile, Felicity turns up at the police station and tells Rose she’s come to bring supplies to Tane, asking to see him and saying she won’t break him out with lasagne. She goes round to see Tane and says what happened between her and Marshall isn’t anything to do with him and he hasn’t got time to get a new lawyer. Tane says she’s too involved in his life. He calls out for Rose, who turns up with Harper, who admits what Felicity said got to her. Tane refuses to speak to either of them, saying no more food, visitors or feeling sorry for him.

Felicity and Harper head back to the Newman house. Harper wonders about Tane’s attitude and Felicity admits that she hooked up with Marshall without knowing who he was and Tane didn’t like it. Harper says this isn’t Felicity’s fault: Tane’s been looking for reasons to give in and if it hadn’t been her he’d have found another excuse. Meanwhile, Rose stops by the cell area to tell Tane she’s leaving for the night. She tells him she’s delayed issuing an arrest warrant but if Tane’s still in the cell when Sarge turns up the next morning, he’ll have Tane arrested, up in front of a magistrate and sent to remand.

Leah arrives home and finds Justin asleep on the sofa with Theo sat nearby. She wakes him and he wonders what he missed. Theo says Section D on servicing and Section E on mechanical underbody. Theo says he understands why they’re worried about him but he needs to finish on his own. Leah convinces Justin to go to bed. Justin says Theo finished off the chocolate biscuits and he and Leah banter about how many Justin had.

Next morning, Felicity runs into Marshall outside the surf club. She wonders if he’s going to see Tane but Marshall says he’s going back to the office now that Tane’s fired him and suggests Felicity broke up with him because he has too much pride for his own good. Felicity asks him to go and see Tane, saying it’s  their fault that Tane’s behaving like he is. Marshall goes to the cell area and asks Tane if he’s ready to get out of there. Tane say Marshall’s not his lawyer any more. Marshall asks what’s more important: Tane’s pride or his freedom.

Marilyn serves Rose at the coffee cart. Justin and Theo turn up and Leah gives Theo a coffee before sending him on his way. Justin asks Leah to take the morning off but Leah says work will distract her and suggests Justin go for a surf. Marilyn points out Theo can always retake the exam. Leah says he needs a win.

Rose arrives at work and hears Marshall trying to convince Tane to accept his help, saying he’ll have two weeks to find a new lawyer and sacking a legal aid lawyer for non-legal reasons isn’t a good look. Tane says neither is sleeping with your client’s wife. Marshall agrees but says either way he gets to walk out of there. He apologises for sleeping with Felicity. After a long silence, Tane tells Marshall to get him out of there and then they’ll talk.
