Leah worries for Theo. Mali is caught in the middle of Rose and Xander’s feud. John’s big night is in Mackenzie’s hands.
Extended Summary
Justin and Theo have just finished a surf. Justin wonders if Theo has heard from Remi and Eden. Theo doesn’t think the three of them can do anything together but does wish them luck. Justin asks about the list TAFE gave him of potential supervisors and immediately dismisses two of them, Jacko from Mangrove River Motors and the guy from Yabbie Creek Auto, as idiots.
At the Diner flat, Rose protests to Xander that she didn’t know how she’d feel about Samuel. Xander says she insisted it was important and he needed to lie to his mother about it, and that she didn’t think of the consequences. Mali admits Samuel was cut up when he saw him and quickly ducks out of the conversation to go to work.
Leah finds Justin and Theo at home. Justin complains about TAFE continuing to use people like that while he was banned for one mistake. Leah points out he was cheating and that letting TAFE know he has anger management issues won’t exactly help. Justin intends to appeal the ban. Leah isn’t sure but Theo suggests it couldn’t hurt.
Near the surf club, John accosts Alf and tells him he should be at the team-building since it’s an official surf club function. Alf says he has to get things ready for Roo coming home. John understands and tells him to go and do it; Alf snaps that he will once John shuts up. Mackenzie takes two goes to get a greeting from Mali. He says the fins for Kirby’s board are ready and Mackenzie notes it can be a present to celebrate her solo career. John chimes in that Mackenzie’s always been generous before asking about a prize for the best cocktail. Mackenzie says she’ll think about it.
At the Diner, Marilyn comments to Rose that Alf mentioned her father was in town and it must be lovely. She quickly realises she’s said the wrong thing as Rose asks for a coffee to go. Leah arrives and Marilyn asks about clearing time for her to spend time with Roo, which Leah quickly agrees to. At Salt, John pays for the night and asks Mackenzie about prizes for not only the best cocktail but the best name. Mackenzie agrees, on condition John doesn’t award either to himself. They discuss the fact Xander doesn’t seem that keen.
Xander and Mali run into each other outside the surf club. Mali tries to defend Rose but Xander doesn’t want to talk about it, saying Rose never cared about family until Mali came along and made her think there was something missing. Mali disagrees but Xander tells him to butt out. At the Diner, Leah and Marilyn discuss Roo coming home. Justin turns up and tells them and Theo that he phoned the tutor and then went into TAFE to plead his case: He hasn’t been approved yet but it’s looking good.
At Salt, Mackenzie lays out the alcohol for John. He asks about the top shelf items but Mackenzie says they’re out of his budget. John also expresses concern about Xander, who’s propping up the bar looking miserable. Mackenzie goes over and insists to Xander that he’s doing the exercise, while offering to talk about the situation at home.
Mali has met with Rose on the beach and apologises for making her feel guilty. Rose admits she agreed with what Xander said and suggests Mali did too. Mali tries to deny it but also thinks she was hasty in sending Samuel away. Rose is annoyed that he spoke to Xander. Mali protests that he’s been in it with her from the start but Rose tells him to stay out of it.
John gives Xander the final numbers for the night and Mackenzie comments on people turning up for free booze. As Rose comes in, Mackenzie gets a text from Dean saying Ziggy’s made the final of a surf competition. She ushers John away, leaving Xander and Rose alone. Rose apologises for how it turned out and Xander complains about being lectured by Mali. He understands it’s something she had to do but asks if it’s just something he’ll never understand. Rose offers to try and explain. At the Diner, Alf tells Leah and Marilyn that everything’s set for Roo’s transfer. Marilyn is looking forward to seeing her. Leah admits she’s not sure Theo is as enthusiastic about the apprenticeship as Justin is.
Near the beach, Rose shows Xander the bracelet Samuel gave her. Xander can see it meant something to her and reminds her it’s her family too. Rose says that turning up at Salt with Samuel and seeing how it made Xander feel made her realise that she hadn’t thought hard enough about what she was doing. She apologises for making him lie to their mother and says she’s going to go and see her and explain what’s been going on. Xander offers to go with her but Rose says she needs to do it on her own, after which she’ll work out what she’s going to do with Samuel.
At the Diner, Alf chats to Mali about Roo coming home while Marilyn expresses regret about not visiting her in the city. John comes in wearing a flowery shirt and tells Alf it’s his last chance to come to the evening. Alf refuses but does accept John giving Roo his love. Marilyn warns John not to drink too much. Mali gets a text from Rose about going to see her mother.
At Salt, John practises throwing a bottle, which Xander catches. Mackenzie is heading out the door and gets a call from Dean as she does so. The committee members turn up and John greets them. Later, Xander finds Mali out on the balcony. Mali tells him about only getting a text from Rose rather than a call but Xander doesn’t think he should read much into it. Mali heads off, leaving Xander to deal with the sound of raucous laughter and breaking glass.
At the Morgan house, Justin tells Leah and Theo he’s got the go-ahead to be supervisor again. He says they’ll sort out a time-table for Theo’s work. Later, Justin heads off for a shower before dinner. Leah asks Theo if this is really what he wants. Theo insists it is and tells her to drop it. Leah doesn’t look convinced.
