John has bigger problems than a hangover. Theo chooses study over music. Marilyn’s on thin ice with Roo.

Extended Summary

John is being driven in the buggy by another life guard, looking somewhat the worse for wear. Nearby, Bree and Justin have finished a surf and discuss Roo being transferred today. Justin asks John if he had a big night, commenting on him needing a chauffeur and help putting the flags out: John, wearing sunglasses, is leaning against one, not moving. John asks the other life guard to take over while he looks after John.

Mackenzie and Xander arrive at Salt. Mackenzie explains that Ziggy won a competition and was invited onto the pro circuit. Dean has asked Mackenzie to come along to look after Izzy. She asks Xander if he’d help Felicity look after Salt while she’s gone. Her attention is suddenly drawn to the shelves behind the bar and she asks if something’s missing. Xander awkwardly says not that he can see.

Justin helps John sit down outside the surf club. Xander immediately appears and takes over, which Justin is happy to go along with. Xander tells John that Mackenzie has noticed the expensive bottle of whiskey he broke. He says he hasn’t said anything and John is happy to go along with that. Xander reminds John he said they’d deal with it tomorrow…which is now.

Back at the Morgan house, Justin greets Leah and wonders where Theo is, shortly before he emerges from his room. Justin suggests they get down to the coursework. Although Theo is willing, Leah says she needs Theo to help her with something at the Diner and tells Justin to stay there and read through what they’ve got to do.

Alf and Bree watch as Roo manages to get herself into her new hospital bed. Roo thanks Bree for making sure Alf can hear them now. She asks about Martha, and Alf says she’s back in Merimbula. Roo notes it’s good to be home and starts to tear up slightly as she realises she’s close to doing that herself. Later, Alf asks how she is and Roo says it’s the same as when he asked ten minutes ago. He offers to go to the canteen. At that moment, Marilyn appears with a cake and gives Roo a hug which she doesn’t really respond to. Roo comments to Bree that she has physio now and starts off on her frame. Marilyn says she’s doing well and Roo gives her a withering look.

Leah and Theo are walking by the beach. Theo apologisses for snapping yesterday but insists he’s fine with the work for TAFE and will be focused this time. Leah asks how he’s going to do that if his heart’s not in it and encourages him to be honest. Later, they arrive home and exchange awkward greetings with Justin before Theo heads to his room. Justin quickly realises Leah didn’t really need Theo’s help at the Diner. Leah says Theo will explain and she’s going to the hospital to visit Roo.

John calls out to Xander from where he’s hiding behind the buggy, wondering what Mackenzie has said. Xander thinks she’s waiting for him to say something, while he’s waiting for John to say something. John suggests blaming it on Gerald but Xander wants him to come clean. Mackenzie calls down from the balcony, asking what they’re talking about.

John and Xander head upstairs where John wonders if Mackenzie’s look means he’s going to lose a limb. He blurts out that he dropped the bottle and smashed it, having wanted to include a nip in his cocktail. Mackenzie asks Xander what a patron was doing behind the bar. John cuts in, offering to replace the bottle, but is staggered that it cost $550. Xander admits he took his eyes off things and Mackenzie says she can’t trust him to look after things so will have to tell Dean she can’t come.

Alf tries to convince Marilyn that Roo’s just tired but Marilyn says Roo isn’t cranky with him or Bree. Roo and Bree return and Marilyn offers tea and cake but Roo wants to keep moving. Marilyn goes to help her and Roo asks what she’s doing, causing her to back off. Later, Alf asks Roo if Marilyn has done something to upset her and Roo says she hasn’t seen Marilyn in months. Leah turns up with some apricot pastries from the Diner. Roo receives them enthusiastically but, when Marilyn turns up with some puzzles, says she’s feeling tired. Leah and Marilyn leave, with Marilyn looking jealous of how friendly Roo is towards Leah.

Theo emerges from his room and Justin says Leah thinks they should speak. Theo reminds him it was his idea to go back to the apprenticeship and says he’s not having second thoughts. Justin gives him his first module but notes this wasn’t the future Theo planned. Theo says he has to make a living. At Salt, John is preparing to pay for the whiskey but draws Mackenzie’s attention to the positive reaction Salt’s got on social media. He asks if this means a discount…of all of it. Xander insists he pay the full amount and convinces Mackenzie he’ll be fine while she’s away. After Mackenzie’s gone, John asks Xander to shout him a coffee. Xander agrees and John asks for a large one.

Leah comments to Justin on Marilyn being off with Roo. Justin points out Marilyn can be full-on. He says he spoke to Theo and he’s committed to doing the apprenticeship, but he also worries Theo isn’t happy. Theo comes in and Leah and Justin tell him they’re worried he’s settling. Theo says he wanted Lyrik to take the world by storm but it didn’t happen, and with no dream there’s no disappointment. Back at the hospital, Bree is unable to give Roo a time for going home. Roo says she knows she’s lucky but wants to be able to get out of bed and sometimes it’s difficult.

At the Diner, Alf admits to Marilyn that Roo was cold towards her. He isn’t sure why she’s angry but recalls what she said about Marilyn not visiting her. Marilyn says she can fix that. Back at the hospital, Bree suggests Roo speak to a counsellor and Roo says she’ll think about it. After Bree’s gone, Marilyn appears and apologises for not visiting her. Roo says she’s glad Marilyn didn’t come because this is all her fault.
