Extended Summary
Alf is sat on the veranda at the caravan park house and Marilyn gives him help with the crossword. Alf is planning to go and visit Roo later. He suggests Marilyn goes with him but she says she’s still covering Irene’s shifts. Meanwhile, Mackenzie, Xander and Mali arrive at the surf club. Xander thanks Mackenzie for letting him stay. Mali notes he can’t complain in the circumstances but wonders when Xander is going to see Rose. John approaches Mackenzie to discuss details for the cocktail night.
Making coffee, Rose asks Samuel if he takes sugar and he gives a very definite no. Samuel says the bracelet suits her. Asked about his mother, he says she’s funny, smart, scary at times and doesn’t suffer fools, saying not to tell her he said that if she ever meets her. He says she wanted to keep their culture alive with the jewellery, food and stories. At the surf club, Xander asks Mali if he’s going to see Rose. Mali points out Xander’s avoiding her too. Xander says he’s scared of saying the wrong thing and, with lying to his mother, doesn’t have the energy to deal with Rose but encourages him to.
Samuel goes over his family with Rose: His oldest brother is Peter, the youngest is Mandla and his father’s called Solomon. He asks about her family and Rose agrees it’s just her and Xander. Mali turns up as they’re about to leave for lunch and reveals Xander stayed at his. Rose apologise to Mali and invites him to join them at Salt. Mali cautions that Xander is working there but Rose doesn’t think it’s a problem.
At the Diner, Marilyn apologises for being late but Leah says it’s not busy. Marilyn mentions Alf being worried about Roo. Leah wonders if there’s something they could do to help, then has an idea, telling a server, Rachel, that they’re going out and to call if anything happens.
Alf is on the phone, promising to bring books and chocolate. Leah and Marilyn turn up; Marilyn stresses this is Leah’s idea and Leah says Marilyn is happy to help. Leah suggests organising a day pass for Roo. She notes it’ll mean contacting the hospital and checking with her doctor. Alf’s only problem is that they didn’t think of this before and he goes to make the call.
At Salt, Mackenzie tells Xander she wants him to organise John’s cocktail lessons. Xander thanks her for letting him stay, saying it took his mind off Rose and Samuel…just before they walk in with Mali. Mackenzie says she’ll serve them. Rose decides to talk to Xander only for him to walk off without looking at her. Later, John tries to discuss cocktail night details with a preocupied Xander. Mackenzie tries to take Rose, Samuel and Mali’s orders. She mentions Rose’s golf skills and Samuel suggests they play some time. Rose wants to go and talk to Xander but Mackenzie convinves her not to, saying they’re busy.
Leah is making plans to take Roo to a picnic somewhere level while Marilyn nervously suggests they should talk to Roo first. Alf comes back and says Roo’s doctor has things to check before she can give him an answer. Marilyn quickly takes this as an excuse to go back to work. At Salt, Xander refuses Mackenzie’s offer to take his break and talk to Rose, and complains when he gets another call from his mum, rejecting her suggestion he tell the truth. He again heads out onto the balcony before Rose can talk to him.
Alf arrives at the surf club and brushes off John’s efforts to get him to sign off on the team-building, shutting the office door in his face. Samuel, Rose and Mali come downstairs and Rose turns down Samuel’s suggestion she join him in a walk. Rose says Samuel’s nice but nothing has clicked: Golf was something she did with her dad and she’s only interested in her heritage, not playing happy families. Upstairs on the balcony, Xander complains to Mackenzie about Rose. Mackenzie notes she and Dean have had lots of rocky moments but have always come out of them stronger.
John approaches Alf, who is on hold to Roo’s doctor at the office. John calls him a good dad, which is enough to get him to question what John wants but he still refuses to have anything to do with the team-building so John agrees he’ll deal with it. Alf is told there’s a change of plan. At the coffee cart, Marilyn and Mali discuss their complicated day. Leah turns up and asks Marilyn about her behaviour. Marilyn admits she’s been avoiding Roo because she thinks she blames her. Leah assures her she said nothing about that. Alf appears and tells everyone Roo doesn’t need a day pass: She’s being transferred back to the Bay.
Samuel has joined Rose at the flat and comments on how beautiful Summer Bay is. He apologises for dropping in on her and suggests they sort out a date for next time. Rose says she’s not sure she wants to see him again now she knows about her identity and culture. Samuel protests he can’t just pretend he’s not her father and Rose says she’s not looking to replace her dad. She tearfully says she can’t do this and Samuel says he hopes she changes her mind. He passes Xander, who asks Rose what’s happened. Meanwhile, Samuel runs into Mali in a park area and tells him to let Rose know his door’s always open.
Xander is bewildered at Rose’s decision. Rose says she’s not sure what she wants now. Mali turns up and mentions seeing Samuel. Rose suggests she’s thinking of Xander and their mum but Xander is annoyed, saying she told him this was important and asking what all this has been for if she’s just going to send Samuel packing.
