Extended Summary
Cash and Eden arrive back at the Parata house. Eden comments on the fact Cash is more relaxed now everything with Andrew is sorted out. They find a note from Felicity saying she’s gone to the city and Tane’s gone to New Zealand, meaning they have the house to themselves for the night. Eden rhetorically wonders what they’re going to do, before Cash carries her in the direction of the bedroom.
At the Diner flat, Rose is complaining to Xander about her lack of invite to the party, cutting off his attempts to respond and telling him to go. Bree arrives as Xander leaves. Rose declares “You’re not invited” the three saddest words in the English language. Bree tries to cheer her up by saying she’s not invited either.
John and Mali arrive at the surf club with John insisting he thought a pod of dolphins was someone waving for help. To stop Mali going upstairs, John announces he got him a birthday present. He dashes to the office and retrieves a baseball cap from lost property. Mali knows where he got it from and also points out that it’s got a bank logo on it. Xander turns up and Mali comments on him being dressed up. He claims it’s all he had clean. Mali tries to follow him upstairs but John drags him to the garage to get his opinion on putting a logo on the buggy.
At the Diner, Marilyn suggests Alf go to Merimbula a bit early but Alf says Martha’s busy on a painting and won’t want him in the way. Bree comes in and asks for some comfort food for Rose. Marilyn gets an alert on her phone that she says is a bill reminder. When Alf wonders why she looked worried, she claims she’s still expecting notification of another delivery. Alf asks if she’s coming home for dinner and she says she’ll stay at the Diner until closing.
Eden runs to check her ringing phone but tells Cash it’s only Remi: He took the rest of the band to see last year’s Battle of the Bands winner. They chat about her choosing to spend time with Cash instead of joining them. Cash apologises for being busy with work. Eden suggests they go to Salt to celebrate the win. At Salt, Xander congratulates Mackenzie on pulling everything together so quickly. The partygoers hear someone coming and call out “Surprise”… to Cash and Eden. A few moments later, Mali arrive with John and they call out “Surprise” again. Mali is touched.
Bree arrives back at the flat and finds Rose dressed up to go and get pizza. Bree quickly deduces she’s going to Salt to crash Mali’s party and refuses to let her out of the flat. At the party, John brags that Mali had no idea what was going on. Mackenzie suspects he did but Mali assures her that, while he knew something was going on, he had no idea what. He notes it’s a chance to enjoy himself before having to face his family.
At the Diner, Marilyn is closing up. She hears a noise outside and calls out, asking if anyone’s there. There’s no answer and she quickly closes the other doors. Up in the flat, Rose thanks Bree for not letting her make a fool of herself. She laments what she did wrong that Mali wouldn’t invite her. Bree tells her that Mali’s the one with the problem.
Mali blows out his candles and notes he wished his mother is in a forgiving mood tomorrow. Mackenzie hands out slices of the cake, with John being quick to get his. Mali chats with Mackenzie and Eden about celebrating with his family. Cash wonders where Rose is and Mali wonders if she had something else on. Mackenzie admits she didn’t invite her, worrying it would be awkward, and worries she made the wrong call. Back at the flat, Rose finishes watching a horror movie with Bree hiding behind a cushion. Rose thanks her for the distraction and says it’s lucky she didn’t turn up at the party and throw herself at Mali. However, Mali then turns up and Bree leaves him and Rose alone.
Back at Salt, Mackenzie is handing out slices of cake to departing party guests including Cash and Eden. John takes two, prompting Mackenzie to hand him a third and thank him for his help. Xander congratulates her on the party and reassures her when she feels bad about not inviting Rose. Back at the flat, Rose tries to pass the evening off as a girls’ night. Mali tells her he didn’t organise the party; Mackenzie chose not to invite her but everything’s sweet now. He admits he’s stressing about seeing his family tomorrow and will have to keep up the act. Rose offers to talk about it with him.
Marilyn lets herself into the beach house (which is still full of boxes). She gets a call from Roo asking where she is. Marilyn says she’s gone to see a friend in Yabbie Creek and is going to stay over. Next morning, Eden complains about Cash having to go to work. He says he has a meeting with the task force about Andrew and Eden suggests he’ll get a promotion. Cash gets a phone call from his sergeant and says he’s on his way. The next comment causes him to turn ashen and ask for it to be said again.
Mali is making breakfast for Rose and Xander, with Bree joining them. She asks if Mali stayed the night and Xander says he’s been downgraded to the couch. Rose chides Xander for not telling her it was a surprise party and Xander says she didn’t let him get a word in edgeways. Mali heads off with some good luck wishes from Rose.
Rose heads into work and finds an officer showing two plain clothes into a private room. Cash comes out of the room they were in and tells Rose that the pair are part of the task force investigating Andrew’s case. He says the woman they sent him home with wasn’t his mother and they’ve no idea who she is.
