Extended Summary

Dean is having a quick shower by his car while Ari looks on. Ari recalls that Dean was like this in prison. Three young men with River Boy tattoos pass by and one of them asks Dean if he wants Ari sorting out. Dean says he’ll sort it. Ari comments on Dean’s friends and suggests they get something to eat. Back in Summer Bay, Bella tells Mackenzie that Colby and Willow have always sorted Dean out in the past and doubts Ari can do it. Mackenzie says Ari’s a good man. Bella agrees but notes he’s not a miracle worker. They see Angelo and Taylor kissing goodbye. Bella grumpily wonders why they get to be happy.

Taylor enters the surf club to see Jasmine, apologising for being late. She says she and Angelo are giving it a go and leaving town today. Jasmine is pleased for her but going to miss her and Taylor thanks her for being a good friend. As Taylor heads off to the gym to get her things together, Jasmine calls out to Bella and Mackenzie, asking them about Dean being missing. Although she smiles at her, Bella heads up to Salt without saying anything. Meanwhile, Alf and Roo are walking on the beach, discussing Kieran. Roo notes Martha was worried about Alf going to see him. Alf thinks she regrets the rift between them and thinks they have to give him a go, so long as he sticks to the rules. Roo wonders if Kieran will really not visit Martha unless Alf’s there. Alf thinks that’s what Martha wants.

At Salt, Bella has left most of a plate of pancakes uneaten. Mackenzie tries to convince her everything will be fine but Bella thinks Ari hasn’t found Dean and things are just getting worse. Mackenzie tries to get her to focus on her assignment but she ends up taking a call from Nikau instead. Mackenzie texts Ari. Sitting on the jetty with Dean, Ari gets the text but ignores it. He notes sometimes you need to get away from it…and sometimes you just bail because you’re scared. He says he didn’t save Dean in prison for him to throw his life away. Dean thinks he’s no good for Bella and isn’t in the right head space to help her. Ari tells him to fake it until he is.

Angelo approaches Alf outside the bait shop and explains he’s doing the rounds with goodbyes. He apologies for flipping the town upside down. Alf says Angelo was just doing his job and did it well. Angelo notes he’s left a mess behind for other people to clear up. Roo comes along and Angelo says his farewells to her as well. Inside the Diner, Irene asks Leah how it feels to be back at work. Leah notes Justin sent her there and is getting stronger. Roo comes in and tells them she’s got another brother, Martha’s son. Leah bombards her with questions but Roo notes Irene is quiet and says she knows Irene knows. She accepts Irene was being a good friend to Martha keeping her confidence.

Ari gets another text from Mackenzie and tells Dean she’s worried about him. He tells Dean it’s up to him whether he wants to stay in Mangrove River or not but Bella needs him. Ari walks away and Dean heads further up the jetty. Meanwhile, at the surf club, Jasmine and Taylor are saying their goodbyes. Taylor asks Jasmine to give Colby her regards when she visits him but Jasmine isn’t sure if she will. Taylor says she’ll call her clients to let them know she’s not there anymore. Soon after, Angelo and Taylor are taking a last look over the beach. Angelo notes he’s not sure if it was the best thing for them or the worst. Taylor says they got through it. They drive off together.

Mackenzie suggests to Bella that she could carry on staying with her even when Dean comes back. Bella thinks this is a sign that Mackenzie doesn’t think he’s coming back. Ari arrives and tells them he found Dean in Mangrove River but isn’t sure if he’s coming back. Mackenzie reiterates to Bella that she wants her to stay with her permanently. Bella agrees and says she’ll wait outside. Soon after, the three of them are exiting the surf club when Bella sees Dean and rushes to hug him, while Mackenzie gives him a playful punch and tells him not to do that again. Dean assures them he’s back for good, exchanging looks with Ari.

The four of them head back to the Diner flat. Bella gives Dean a rather rambling account of her visit to Colby, saying he had a split lip like Dean. She explains that it was a welcome party and they don’t know he’s a cop. She goes to arrange a visit but Ari suggests letting Dean settle in. Mackenzie asks if Bella still wants to stay with her, and Bella says she’d rather stay at home. Dean agrees in a rather detached manner. Ari sends Bella and Mackenzie to get dinner and congratulates Dean on faking it. Down in the Diner, Irene notes Jasmine looks bothered. Jasmine explains she’s thinking of visiting Colby. Irene says to do it if it’s right for her. Bella and Mackenzie come in and ask Leah for lasagne and cake. Irene and Leah realise that Dean’s back.

Ari suggests to Dean that they take Bella to Mackenzie’s but Dean doesn’t want to mess her up. Ari realises Dean doesn’t want to go to the jail. They both recall promising never to go back and Ari admits he has stuff going on himself. As Bella and Mackenzie arrive back, Dean quietly tells Ari to sort it. That evening, Irene says her goodbyes to Leah before going to check on Jasmine. Jasmine admits she’s not sure who Colby is anymore: He’s been good to her but he murdered someone. Irene says she’s not condoning it, but Ross was a piece of work and you’re capable of anything if you’re pushed hard enough. Jasmine notes now she feels like a terrible friend.

At the farm, Mackenzie comments that Dean’s not good but Ari thinks he’ll come good and it’s up to Bella where she stays. Mackenzie thanks him for bringing Dean back but Ari says Dean did that. There’s a text alert; Mackenzie convinces Ari to check it since it might be Dean or Bella. Ari says it’s from Nik but in fact it’s from Paul, saying the job’s next week.
