Extended Summary

Watching Nikau working outside the bait shop, Alf wryly comments on him getting the ropes tangled before giving him a hand and asking about Bella not being able to see Colby. Moments later, Bella comes running into Nikau’s arms, followed by Dean. Alf tells Nikau to take the rest of the day off and attempts to ask Dean about Colby. Bella, Nikau and Dean head up to the flat where Dean says he’ll call Colby’s lawyer for information: They were turned away at the gate without explanation. Bella worries he might have been bashed or even be dead, worrying about what happens to cops in prison. Nikau tries to reassure her by saying they’d have been told if it was something like that and no-one in jail knows he’s a cop.

At the hospital, Leah and Tori thank Ziggy for stopping by. Ziggy leaves, passing Jasmine who is just finishing work and asks Leah and Tori if they need anything. Leah reassures Tori that Justin will be his normal self soon and that when he is they’ll finish Grace’s party. Tori notes all the presents are still on the table waiting to be opened and says she’s glad Christian was there. Jasmine looks uncomfortable and leaves. Back at the flat, Dean explains prisoners aren’t allowed visitors in the first week. Bella asks why he didn’t know that from when he was in prison and Dean says no-one ever visited him. He asks Nikau to keep an eye on Bella while he goes for a walk.

At Salt, Ryder tells Roo and Martha that he got accepted into a hospitality internship, where the top five students in his class get to work in a five-star resort. However, Ryder thinks he can’t go with everything that’s going on at the moment. Roo disagrees with his claim that he can’t leave her but Ryder maintains that he’s not going. Downstairs, Roo and Martha fill in Alf. Martha suggests getting Bella and Nikau to talk to him but Alf thinks they’ve got enough on their plate. Roo suggests Mackenzie. Alf says he’ll have a go first.

Ziggy and Jasmine are walking by the beach and notice Dean sitting there. Ziggy is reluctant to be there for him, saying she’s not sure she could be that strong. Jasmine says Dean’s lost his girlfriend, his son and his two best mates and needs all the friends he can get. Ziggy goes to sit with him, saying she’s sorry about Colby. She also notes she tried to call Willow but just got voicemail. Dean notes goodbyes are hard. Ziggy leaves. Back at Salt, Alf asks Ryder to sit with him and sarcastically comments on the fact they can’t do without him. Ryder still isn’t convinced. Dean comes in and asks for a beer. Ryder asks him about Colby but Dean isn’t interested in conversation.

Nikau has made Bella a sandwich despite her claiming not to be hungry and convinces her to take one bite, impressing her with how good it tastes. Ziggy turns up and asks how they all are but Bella tells her to get out, saying she turned her back on them. At the hospital, Christian joins Leah and Tori and tells them that Justin’s out of surgery and on his way to recovery. He says they removed a significant amount of the tumour and, although they’ll have to do tests when he comes round, Christian’s confident.

Dean asks Ryder for another beer. Ryder says he’ll give him one for free if he drinks a glass of water first. Dean points out his sister owns the place but Ryder retorts that she left him in charge, and he’ll cut Dean off if he doesn’t slow down. Alf puts a burger down in front of Dean, saying he’ll pay for it, and Ryder agrees Dean has to eat it to get another beer. Alf points out Ryder’s shift ended twenty minutes ago and says he’ll keep an eye on Dean. Dean seems happy to accept Alf as his new best mate. Back at the flat, Nikau is trying to get Bella to go out. Bella appears with some of Colby’s things, saying she can’t just keep them for twenty-five years, although she’s not sure what to do with them. Nikau recalls going through his dad’s things when he died. Bella finds a box full of clippings about her being missing and notes it might have been better if he hadn’t found her. She finds a photo of Colby pushing her in a wheelbarrow as a child and says Ross tore up her copy.

Justin comes round with Leah and Tori by his side. They call for Christian. Justin feels sick, which worries Leah since it didn’t happen before, but Tori and Christian assure her it’s normal. Justin can feel when Christian touches his leg and also wriggle his toes. Tori follows Christian out of the room and says he was right and she was over-cautious. After a bit of prompting, she apologises for doubting his judgement. Soon after, the two of them take Grace home. Christian notes she’s probably wanting to get her hands on the presents and teases Tori about the elaborate party and cake attempts. He assures her Justin will be fine.

Bella leaves a phone message for Dean, wondering if he’ll be home for dinner or if he’s all right. Nikau suggests he needs space and Bella thanks him for keeping her company. Ryder turns up and tells them about the internship. They are both pleased for him but Ryder says he’ll be gone for a few weeks and will stay if Bella needs him. Bella assures him she wants him to go. At the surf club, Roo gets a call from Ryder confirming he’s going and tells Martha. Alf escorts Dean downstairs; the staff at Salt have cut him off. Dean bumps into Jasmine and asks her to buy him a beer. She suggests a coffee instead and asks about Colby. Dean says he’s sick of everyone asking about him: He doesn’t know how Colby is and doesn’t care.

Ryder arrives home to find Alf, Martha and Roo have arranged a going away meal for him. As the others chat about what Bella and Nikau said, Martha checks the post and finds an envelope with a hand-written note in it saying “M, we need to talk. I’ll be seeing you soon, Kieran.” She says nothing to the others, putting it in her pocket. Meanwhile, Dean turns up at the farm house to see Ziggy, drunk. She worries that he drove there like that and offers to get him a taxi. Dean says that he needs her.
