Extended Summary

Dean, Amber and Jai are arriving back from their trip outside the Diner. Roo appears and asks if they’ve seen Martha. On learning they’ve just got back to town, she realises they won’t have heard about Bella and advises Dean to get in touch with her, adding that she’s at Ari’s and doesn’t have a phone. She sees Martha with Irene on the wharf. Martha is asking Irene not to tell anyone that Kieran’s back. Roo comes over and notes that Alf and Ryder are still at the police station, suggesting she and Martha join them. Martha doesn’t look keen on the idea so Irene suggests she wait at the Diner with her. Up in the flat, Jai is laying his things out on the table. Dean is on the phone, presumably to Ari, getting an update about Paul and Leon and says to get Bella to call him if she wants. He doesn’t give Amber any details and notes that he hasn’t smoothed over using Colby’s room with Bella yet, so she and Jai should have his room for now while he sleeps on the couch. Amber checks he’s committed but they’re interrupted by Jai starting a pillow fight.

Ziggy and Mackenzie are walking outside the surf club. Mackenzie is still torn on what to do about her pregnancy, noting she’ll be dealing with it alone. She comments on Ziggy’s break-up with Tane and Ziggy says Mackenzie’s problem is a welcome distraction. They see Dean, Amber and Jai coming the other way and Ziggy makes herself scarce. Although Amber is frosty towards Mackenzie, she greets Jai warmly and agrees to get them all a pizza. At the Diner, Marilyn briefly checks on Irene, who joins Martha with a coffee. Irene asks how long Kieran’s back and Martha says he appeared about a week after the police turning up and she’s trying to get him to stay in her van but hasn’t had a chance to talk to him about it yet. Irene seems happy to keep quiet but offers to walk Martha home. Martha says Irene’s the only person she can trust at the moment.

While Dean is on the phone, Mackenzie is chatting to Amber and is surprised to learn she’s moved in with Dean, with Amber similarly surprised to learn Mac didn’t know. Dean says Bella’s staying the night with Nikau, which Jai notes means more pizza for them. Mackenzie asks to talk to Dean and invites him upstairs for a drink, with Amber and Jai going on. A short time later, they’re on the Salt balcony and briefly chat about Amber moving in. Dean wonders why Mackenzie didn’t get herself a drink and Mackenzie explains that she’s pregnant. Dean congratulates her but Mackenzie says she’s not sure if she’s keeping it, adding that Ari doesn’t know and broke up with her.

Irene and Martha arrive back at the Stewart house where Alf and Roo are preparing dinner. Ryder has already gone to bed and Martha goes to freshen up. Irene tells Alf and Roo that she saw Martha talking to Kieran but there was no-one there. Later, Alf and Roo are discussing the situation when Martha comes down. Alf says they need to talk to her about Kieran. Martha realises Irene told them and wants to call Kieran and warn him before they set the police on him again. Alf and Roo insist they’re not doing that. Martha says if they stop her seeing Kieran, she’ll never forgive them, and backs out of dinner.

At the surf club, Dean suggests things aren’t over between Mackenzie and Ari, but Mackenzie says he’s already spent the night with Mia and it’s her he loves. Mackenzie is surprised at Dean’s lack of opinion but Dean says he’s got her back whatever she decides. Mackenzie thanks him before deciding to head home. There, she encounters Ziggy, who is frustrated at getting frequent texts from Tane. Mackenzie explains about Dean’s non-reaction, noting she thought he’d tell her she was crazy if she kept the baby. She also reveals Amber and Jai are living with him.

Dean and Amber are on the balcony at the flay. Amber talks about needing to unpack, enroll Jai at school and look for a job tomorrow, but Dean isn’t really listening and dismisses her queries about not telling Mackenzie they were coming. He asks if she regrets not telling him about Jai sooner. Mackenzie says it seemed like the right decision at the time but isn’t so sure in retrospect. Next morning, Roo and Marilyn are chatting on the beach as they walk behind Alf and Martha. Roo notes Martha has only seemed happier lately because she thinks she’s talking to Kieran. She asks Marilyn to keep her busy and Marilyn takes Martha to the Diner. Alf notes Martha’s acting as though the previous night never happened and last time they missed the signs she disappeared for thirty years. Roo says there’s no use talking to her and she needs professional help.

Amber gets off the phone and tells Jai he can start back at school today, which he doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about. She suggests Dean come in with them. Dean says they don’t need him. Amber says she just thought it might be nice to do it together. Instead, Dean goes round to see Mackenzie and tells her she needs to tell Ari about the pregnancy. Mackenzie says she doesn’t want Ari to feel obligated or to pressure her, and he lost his right to a say when he dumped her. Dean insists she can’t shut him out. Ziggy steps in and leads Dean away. After they’ve gone, Mackenzie calls someone and arranges an appointment for next week.

Alf and Roo replace Marilyn looking after Martha at the Diner and tell her they want to see a counsellor. Martha is resistant to the idea, even when Irene chimes in since Martha is annoyed at her breaking her confidence, but Alf and Roo insist. Later, Marilyn finds Alf outside the bait shop and he notes Martha only let Roo go to the hospital with her. He is upset that he can’t help her.

Ziggy and Dean are walking outside the surf club. Ziggy insists it’s Mackenzie’s choice and would be even if she and Ari were together. Dean says he’s been in Ari’s shoes. Amber sees them together and doesn’t look happy. Later, back at the flat, Amber tells Dean she’s leaving: He’s put seeing Ziggy ahead of being there for Jai so it’s obviously not working.
