Extended Summary

Kat and Robbo are preparing to go for an early morning run outside the Diner when they see McCarthy setting up a police guard outside. He approaches them and says that they aren’t taking any chances, assuming that Novak planted the phone to put them off the scent. Kat decides to abandon the run. Meanwhile, Marilyn joins Alf and Roo at the hospital. Roo is still in pain and Alf says she hardly slept. Quinn comes in as well and checks on Roo. Roo asks how Ryder is and Quinn admits she was hoping they’d know: She went to his room and found his bed hadn’t been slept in. It looks like he’s run away.

Buddy is barking loudly at the back door of the Morgan house. Raffy loudly greets Tori as she enters and gives her a lunch she’s prepared, stopping her from going near Buddy and asking her to check on Roo. Once she’s gone, Ryder enters through the door Buddy was barking at and thanks Raffy for letting him stay. He suggests they have egg and bacon for breakfast. After a few more hints, Raffy realises he wants her to go out and get something. At the Diner, John is asking Ben and Maggie to look out for Ryder and gives them the full story on Roo’s injury and his disappearance. Raffy comes in and John questions her. Raffy says she has no idea where Ryder is but is sure he’s fine.

Tori joins Alf and Marilyn in Roo’s room. Roo is still in pain and Tori says she’ll set up a PDA, which Marilyn recalls will let Roo control her pain relief. Tori adds that she’s going to organise an MRI. Meanwhile, Raffy arrives home and Ryder jumps out and surprises her. Raffy is annoyed, reminding him that Roo’s in hospital because of him while he’s messing around. Ryder says he’s sticking around to make sure Roo’s all right then he’s going. Raffy tries to get him to contact his family, knowing they’re worried, but he refuses.

Robbo tries to dissuade Kat from testifying. Kat thinks that once she does Novak and the others will have no reason to kill her but Robbo suggests they might do it as payback. Kat points out that that means she’s stuffed either way so she’d rather do the right thing. Robbo insists on going with her. McCarthy, Shepherd and Vincent meet them at the station. Shepherd and Vincent say they’ll drive Kat to the court house themselves but Robbo points out there could be a sniper waiting for her there. He and Kat suggest she testify by video link from the police station. McCarthy agrees. Robbo paces until McCarthy, Shepherd and Vincent return and say they’ve got the link set up. Kat tells Robbo she’ll meet him at Salt.

Roo’s PDA doesn’t seem to have made much difference. Tori says they’ll take her for the MRI now, after which there’ll be a meeting to discuss her treatment. Alf and Marilyn run into Quinn in the corridor; she still hasn’t found Ryder and thinks Alf having a go at him didn’t help. Alf says that he needs discipline. Quinn decides to go and carry on looking. Ryder and Raffy are walking near the Diner. Ryder is talking about going back to the Gold Coast to find his father. They see Quinn and Raffy wants to approach her but Ryder drags Raffy into the bait shop to hide, saying she’ll just have a go at him. He sees a box full of keys and takes some.

Roo is back in her room. Tori tells her, Alf and Marilyn that the MRI showed there are bone fractures and nerve damage, which is what’s causing the pain. The surgeons want to operate to fuse the spine but there is a small risk that it could damage the spinal cord and leave her unable to walk. The only other option is to deal with it non-surgically, which is slower and has less chance of success. Roo asks for a second opinion. Later, Tori checks back in on Alf and Roo; Marilyn has gone to get food. Roo’s pain medication is now working but she doesn’t want to do anything that might leave her in a wheelchair. Tori says the alternative is physio and a back brace but she could be left with chronic pain. Alf tries to get Roo to follow the doctors’ advice but she cuts him off. Alf worries about Quinn with Roo more concerned about Ryder.

Over the video link, the prosecutor asks Kat why she isn’t at the court in person. Kat explains about the attempts on her life. As she is talking, Robbo parks his car back in the Bay. He has flashbacks of Novak’s death and disposing of the body and screams in frustration, punching the inside of the car repeatedly. Ben and Maggie see him but decide not to approach. At the wharf, Ryder and Raffy are boarding the boat that Ryder took the keys for. Ryder says everyone on the Gold Coast knows how to use one. He says Quinn used to drag him around from gig to gig until he was old enough to leave on his own. He then says he’ll take Raffy to where he and Alf go fishing.

Kat has met Ben and Maggie at the surf club and is telling them about testifying. They tell her about seeing Robbo. Kat heads back to the flat where Robbo is drinking. She reminds him they were meant to meet at Salt but accepts he was distracted. She hopes that her testimony was enough and tells him about what Ben and Maggie saw. She wishes people knew him better and didn’t misjudge him before noting that now they can move on.

Quinn is on her phone at the surf club, cancelling her gig and seemingly losing her contact there in the process. She tells Alf she waited too long because she thought Ryder would turn up. Alf admits Roo isn’t any better. Quinn thinks Ryder doesn’t trust or even like her. Alf doesn’t think they’re past fixing, pointing to how their relationship has improved, although Quinn doesn’t seem to want to discuss it. Meanwhile, Ryder and Raffy pull into an inlet. Raffy asks him about his father and Ryder says he’s a muso who he’s only seen a couple of times since he left. Raffy recalls how she ran away to find her father and only succeeded in making her family worried. Ryder is unimpressed but Raffy says he’s running away from people in Summer Bay who care for him to look for someone who doesn’t. They see something on the beach ahead. Ryder approaches and uncovers Novak’s body. Raffy screams and Ryder backs away.
