Extended Summary

Hunter and Olivia are messing about on the beach; Hunter asks if Olivia’s reconsidered celebrating birthdays. After a bit of banter about his plans for next year, he admits he’s thinking about VJ. Olivia suggests they pop in on him, after getting cupcakes from the Diner. Meanwhile, Morag goes to update Marilyn on John, saying she’s lodging the sentencing appeal and, if it’s not dismissed, they’ll set a date for the hearing. She comments on the fact Marilyn hasn’t been to see John in days and suggests she go that afternoon. Marilyn says she’s taken a shift at the Diner.

James meets up with Roo outside the house and admits he didn’t handle things too well the previous night. Roo understands where he’s coming from. James says he still wants her but not the baby. Roo points out she couldn’t go through with a termination with Martha. James says he knows what he wants and leaves, passing Hunter and Olivia. They ask after VJ. Roo says he’s upstairs, adding that she’s fine when Hunter asks. Hunter and Olivia find VJ on the sofa: They texted him but he doesn’t know where his phone is. They try to get him to spend the day with them but VJ says he isn’t in the mood for cupcakes and video games and tells them to leave.

At the Diner, Roo fills Irene in on her conversation with James, saying she has to choose between him and the baby. Irene thinks she should keep the baby and learns she hasn’t told Alf or Morag. A short time later, in the back room of the surf club, Roo has filled in Morag, whose response is full of vitriol, saying she can’t believe it’s happened again: Roo got pregnant as a child and now she’s pregnant by one. Roo recalls Morag took her in last time she was pregnant and asks her to support her while she decides. Morag doesn’t think Roo should even consider having the baby, calling her irresponsible. Roo storms out.

Marilyn offers to stay and help Irene, volunteering to clear the fridge out even though it was just done. Hunter and Olivia tell Irene how depressed VJ was. Irene hasn’t seen him since the party, and is giving him and Leah a wide berth, but also thinks he shouldn’t be alone. Hunter and Olivia go back to the house and tell VJ they’re taking him out for lunch. Hunter suggests he look on the bright side: Without Luc, he can hang out with them more. The comment earns him a punch on the arm from Olivia and VJ calling him an idiot, but VJ does agree to go with them.

Patrick joins Kat on the flat balcony, suggesting they’re both hiding there. Kat denies it but does agree Luc cries a lot. Ash joins them, saying Luc’s finally asleep, but Kat thinks they still can’t do anything. Ash insists otherwise so Kat suggests the two of them have lunch. Ash asks Patrick to babysit but he suggests the four of them go out instead. Kat doesn’t look happy. Later, Ash, Kat and Patrick arrive at the Diner for lunch. Ash has left Luc asleep upstairs, on the grounds she’d start crying again if he woke her, which Kat isn’t too comfortable with. Marilyn seems wary of the idea as well, despite Ash pointing out he has a baby monitor. At that point, Luc starts crying so Ash goes back to deal with her. Patrick also bails, leaving Kat alone.

Olivia and Hunter are laughing together at Salt but VJ doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself. Hunter tries to say it’s like old times and VJ acidly replies that he’s now a widower and a dad, except he’s not a dad anymore. He goes to get another drink. Meanwhile, Ash is about to leave the Diner flat when Kat returns, saying she’s not hungry anymore. She says she knows having a baby is going to change things but he needs to bear with her. Ash says things will get better. They start kissing but then Luc starts crying again and Ash goes to see to her.

Roo returns home and tells Morag she doesn’t want another lecture. Morag instead says she’s sorry and that she’ll support her. Roo admits she’d be doing it on her own and Morag tells her to think about what she wants. Morag goes to the Diner and briefly chats to Irene about it before going to file the papers. James comes in and assures Irene he isn’t pressuring Roo. He meets up with Roo by the beach and she tells him she’s keeping the baby: He doesn’t have to be a dad but it’s a chance for her to be a mum. They hug goodbye.

VJ is now drunk. Hunter and Olivia try to cut him off by saying they’ve got no more money but he’s happy to pay, saying he’s got lots of spare cash now Luc has gone. They try to get him to go back to theirs or to the beach or a movie, with Hunter saying his drinking’s not fun anymore. VJ mocks Hunter for becoming an angel, saying he didn’t get it from Zac. Olivia tries to defuse things by sending Hunter away for a bit. Back at the Diner, Kat has returned and admits to Marilyn she left Ash looking after Luc. Marilyn admits her shift has finished so Kat invites her to have a coffee with her.

VJ tells Olivia she used to be a crazy cool chick, reminding her of the damage she did to Leah’s car when they first met. He reflects they could have been happy together. Olivia says he’ll be happy again but VJ says he has nothing to show for the last year: Not Billie, not Luc. He tries to kiss Olivia who has to shout at him to make him stop. He apologises and leaves, passing Hunter, who asks Olivia what happened. They find VJ by the beach and Hunter has a go at VJ for cracking onto his girlfriend, saying they were trying to help him. VJ says he doesn’t need pity and shoves Hunter. Hunter shoves him back. VJ swings a punch at Hunter which he dodges. Hunter throws VJ to the ground and starts hitting him. Olivia pushes him off and asks VJ if he’s all right.
