Extended Summary

Leah is on the phone to Morag and agrees to look in on Marilyn. Zac turns up to pick up his mail. Leah hands it over in a matter-of-fact way but he notices she’s still wearing her wedding ring. He tries to ask how she’s going but Leah simply suggests he has his mail kept at the post office. They’re interrupted by a phone call from Olivia, telling them about Hunter and VJ’s fight and that VJ’s too drunk to make it home. Olivia is berating Hunter when Leah and Zac arrive. Zac tries to help with VJ but Leah says she can handle it and walks VJ away. Zac asks Hunter what happened. Olivia says that’s a good question and walks off.

Hunter fills Zac in at the surf club. Zac points out VJ was drunk and has been through a lot lately. Hunter asks him what he’d do if someone cracked onto Leah. Zac replies that VJ isn’t just someone and Hunter should have been the bigger man. Meanwhile, VJ is recovering at home, with Leah giving him lots of water. He is dismissive of her criticism, saying he was just having fun for once. Leah says it’s not the answer.

That evening, Leah goes to see Marilyn, who guesses that Morag sent her. Leah has heard that she’s not seeing John. Marilyn says she can’t face going back to the prison and John understands. Leah notes he should be home soon but Marilyn replies that she’s seen a different side to John and is worried that something deep inside him caused him to start the fires. Leah says it was the tumour but Marilyn replies that the tumour’s gone and the anger’s still there. Meanwhile, John is in his cell when Deacon raps on the window and pointedly shows him burns on his arm.

Next morning, Zac finds Leah outside the house and asks about VJ, filling her in on him making a pass at Olivia. Leah says VJ’s not his responsibility anymore. Zac says he still loves her. Leah says there’s nothing left to be said and she wants a divorce. Zac says he doesn’t and insists they talk. He says that he understand why she finds it difficult to trust him but will do whatever it takes. Leah says that everything’s changed and it can’t be fixed. Zac insists he knows she still loves him and asks her why she’s still wearing her wedding ring if she doesn’t. Leah takes it off and offers it back to him. When he doesn’t take it, she throws it into a plant pot.

Hunter finds Olivia serving at the Diner and asks when she’s going to talk to him. Olivia says he should be talking to VJ and that she’s the one who has the right to be mad at him…but she isn’t, because they both know why he’s acting the way he is. She says Hunter should cut him some slack, pointing out how many times VJ has forgiven him. Hunter tracks VJ down at the surf club and buys him some crisps. VJ apologises for trying to kiss Olivia. Hunter says he knows he didn’t mean it and wishes he’d realised that before tackling him to the ground. They knock fists.

VJ goes home to Leah and tells her he made up with Hunter. He apologises for being rude and asks about Marilyn. Leah says she’s finding it hard on her own. VJ is shocked to hear she isn’t visiting John. Meanwhile, John is in a corridor at the prison. Deacon approaches with two friends and taunts him about lighting fires and running away. John guesses Deacon plans to provoke him into taking a swing so his friends have an excuse to join in. Deacon, in a rather emotional manner, says John killed a beautiful girl minding her own business. John guesses it’s to do with the scars on his arm and says they could be in there for fifteen years so he should get on with what he has to do. He pushes Deacon hard and the others pile in. They dump John back in his cell.

Zac runs into Hunter at the surf club and learns he made up with VJ. Hunter asks about Leah and Zac admits she wants a divorce. Hunter tells him not to give up. At the caravan park house, Leah notices Roo looking ill and she casually mentions it’s morning sickness. Leah is shocked but pleased for her. Roo explains it’s over with James. Leah tells her she’s divorcing Zac. Roo says he still loves her and Leah retorts he should have thought of that before sleeping with someone else. Roo says they were good friends before they fell in love and have a history she didn’t have with James.

Marilyn gets a phone call from John, who says he just wanted to hear her voice and understands her not visiting. Marilyn is pleasant but lies that someone’s at the door to cut the conversation short. Soon after, VJ turns up and asks about her not seeing John, saying she was on his side when no-one else was. Marilyn tells him her worry that something deep down inside him made him light the fires. VJ says it wasn’t easy to forgive him but he did because he knows that deep down it wasn’t John. Marilyn goes to the prison, seeing Deacon in the visiting room. John dismisses his injuries as slipping in the shower or a minor altercation. Marilyn passes on news from Morag: The court have accepted his appeal and set it for four weeks’ time. Deacon keeps looking over at them as they talk.

That evening, Leah finds Zac sitting round the back of the house. He offers her the ring back and challenges her to say she doesn’t love him. When she doesn’t answer, he asks her for another chance the next day.
