Extended Summary

Zac runs into Roo at the surf club and tells her Leah’s agreed to give him a chance to win her back the next day and taken the ring back. He asks for her help. At the Palmer house, Marilyn tells Morag that John was hurt and in danger. Morag says she’ll try and get the hearing brought forward and suggests the authorities could confine him until then. Meanwhile, John is in his cell when Deacon appears in the doorway, bantering about him being lonely. John says Deacon’s had his fun and Deacon says he’s just getting started.

Next morning, Phoebe and Justin explain to Tori that they need to fix up the farm house prior to an inspection. Justin ropes Tori into helping out since she has the day off work. Phoebe says the tour manager asked about booking Justin’s ticket; he gets uncomfortable and quickly leaves. Tori checks with Phoebe that he’s still going and Phoebe explains that since everything happened with Brody he’s not been so sure. Later, Justin is fixing a tap at the farm while Phoebe does the walls. She briefly reminisces about living there, since they’re handling the inspection for Ash and Kat. She tells Justin she still wants him to come on the tour and he confirms he isn’t sure about leaving Brody. Phoebe decides he should stay. They are interrupted by Tori, who has fixed the bathroom, so Phoebe tells the others to go while she waits for the inspection.

Marilyn visits John in jail; he is delighted to see she is no longer wearing the glove, her hand having healed. Marilyn tells him the appeal’s been brought forward to the next day or maybe even the afternoon. Morag’s also spoken to his welfare officer, who will keep a discreet eye on him. Later, Deacon approaches John in the yard, having heard about his appeal. John explains about his brain tumour and how he doesn’t even remember starting the fires but says it will always haunt him. Deacon replies that someone burnt down his house and killed his daughter. He’s in there because he killed him and says that John’s never getting out of there.

Roo is keeping Leah in the kitchen while Zac sets up outside. They comment on how their lives are meant to be sorted by their age. Zac summons Leah outside: He has set up a romantic meal at the spot where they got married. Leah tells him she’s touched and lets him pour her champagne. Later, they are chatting in a friendly manner. Zac says he wanted to show her they can still have fun together. Leah recalls how she didn’t react well when he proposed to her and, after initially refusing, asks for another champagne.

At the surf club, Tori tells Justin to go with Phoebe, saying she and Mason can keep an eye on Brody. She muses that they’re having a hard time adjusting to being out of witness protection. Justin asks about Nate and she says she hasn’t heard from him since he went bush. She suggests that in a year’s time Nina might let Justin see Ava and tells him to put himself first. At the farm house, Phoebe is strumming a guitar and singing when Roo turns up and says the owner should keep it and market it as the place where Phoebe lived. Roo explains that she knows the owner and he asked her to do the inspection. As she does a quick look round, Phoebe notes she’s distracted by Justin and Roo tells her not to give up on her dreams. She says she’ll wait outside. Phoebe packs her guitar and has a quick look round before leaving.

Deacon confronts John in his cell with an improvised knife. Close to tears, he tells John to scream like his daughter did. John refuses, saying what Deacon does to him isn’t going to bring back his daughter or Billie. Deacon insists that someone has to pay. John says someone already has and gently tells him that nothing they do in there will change anything. The guard appears, reminding them to keep the door open. He tells Deacon to go back to his cell and that John has a visitor. It’s Morag, who tells John to get changed: The judge has called his case.

Marilyn is in the kitchen at home when John enters behind her: The sentence has been reduced to community service. They hug and Marilyn offers to get him dinner or leave him alone if that’s what he wants. John says there’s something he has to do. He helps Morag pack up her car outside the Diner, thanking her for what she’s done. Roo and Marilyn approach and the Palmers leave, with Morag telling Roo to keep an eye on them. Roo comments on her morning sickness and Morag acknowledges that she respects Roo for facing up to the challenge and will be there if she needs her. Roo tells Morag she loves her and Morag awkwardly returns the sentiment.

Zac and Leah are walking up to the house. Zac suggests they have dinner together but Leah is suddenly more reticient, eventually saying that the day doesn’t change anything and she can’t get Sam out of her head. Zac looks annoyed, which Leah takes offence at. Zac says he’ll always regret going to Sam but it was Leah closing him down that started it. Leah insists she was looking after VJ and Luc, but Zac protests that he begged her to let him help her. Sadly, he realises it’s not going to work. Leah tells him to go. A short time later, he joins her inside the house. Leah tells him they can’t keep doing this and Zac accepts it’s over. She gives him the ring back and hugs him before leaving the room.

Justin finds Phoebe round the back of the house. She looks upset and says she won’t go on the tour, since she couldn’t stand a year without him. Justin leads her inside and tells her they’re both going because they belong together. He produces a ring and places it on her finger before kissing her.
