VJ and Leah struggle to deal with losing Luc to Ash. Kat and Patrick hide their discomfort with Luc around Ash. An unfortunate accident puts Brody in an even worse position with Zannis and his family. How does James feel about Roo’s pregnancy?
Extended Summary
Leah comes downstairs and overhears VJ fondly reading Luc a bedtime story. She gently suggests Luc needs to be put down. VJ agrees and, after reflecting that it’s her last night with them, takes her upstairs. At the Diner flat, Ash and Kat have clearly been, in their words, christening the joint. They seem set to continue but Patrick arrives. Ash points him towards his room and an embarassed Kat retreats. Patrick quips that it’s not the first time he’s walked in on Ash. He seems more bothered than necessary when Ash jokes about putting Luc in his room. Left alone, he picks up one of Luc’s toys, then throws it aside.
Mason is meant to be cooking for the Morgans but complains to Justin and Raffy that there’s only asparagus in the fridge. Brody turns up with bags of shopping and volunteers to take over. He hangs up his coat in the hall and, unnoticed, the packet of drugs falls out of it. The family chat about whether or not Justin should follow Phoebe to the US; general consensus seems to be that he should, but Brody seems distracted and troubled. Meanwhile, Roo and James are at the Diner. Roo admits she feels a bit sick and suspects she’s freaked James out. James gets a call from work and Roo tells him to take it. He tells the person on the other end that it’s not a good time, explaining to Roo that he has a job offer in the city in the morning. Roo tells him to go, even though he has to leave straightaway, since it will give them time to think. He says he’ll be back in the afternoon.
The Morgans finish their meal, satisfied, although Raffy tries to feed some to Buddy. She asks about dessert and Brody retorts by asking what she’s going to make. Mason offers to get her an ice cream and Brody volunteers to do the dishes. Justin tells him he’s spoken to the bank and his cards are on their way. Unnoticed, Buddy sniffs around the package in the hallway. Next morning, Leah and VJ are waiting outside the house with Luc, awkwardly debating whether they got all her stuff. Ash and Kat turn up to collect her. Ash says he wishes it didn’t have to be like this but Leah shuts him down, saying it’s only an interim order. VJ reluctantly hands Luc over, giving advice about her naps, and they promise to call him and look after her. Leah tries to convince VJ that it’s not forever.
Raffy gets up and stands in a puddle that she deduces is the result of Buddy having an accident. However, she then finds Buddy looking ill and calls out for Justin and Mason. Meanwhile, at the Diner, Roo tells Irene that she spoke to James and he doesn’t want to keep the baby. She talks about the risk to her health and Irene recalls being pregnant at forty-five. However, she also tells Roo that even without James she won’t be on her own.
Ash and Kat bring Luc back to the Diner flat, where they greet Patrick. However, Luc starts crying and no-one’s entirely sure what to do about it. At Ash’s suggestion, Kat picks her up but it makes no difference. Ash tries to get Patrick to take over but he doesn’t think it will help. Meanwhile, Leah finds VJ sitting alone and they reflect on how quiet it is. VJ thinks he’s broken his promise to Billie. Leah says it wasn’t his fault and they’ll get her back but VJ is in no mood for reassurances.
Brody is sorting out the board at Salt when Mason comes in and tells him about Buddy being sick and being taken to the vets. When he says that it looks like Buddy ate something poisonous, it obviously strikes a chord with Brody. After Mason has gone, he checks his coat pocket and finds the package gone. Back at the house, Justin tells Raffy that it doesn’t look like anything from the list the vet gave them is in the house. He has to go to the garage but reassures her that the vet is looking after Buddy; Raffy gives him a hug before he leaves. She then notices the chewed wrapper stuffed under a kitchen surface, with traces of drugs still on it.
Luc is still crying. Patrick suggests Ash take her out in the car again but Ash says she’ll just start again when he stops. He recalls looking after Billie but Patrick points out she was older. Kat tries to get out by offering to get lunch. Ash tells her to go on her own and tries to get Patrick to take over but Patrick says he has a cold so should steer clear, disappearing into his room. Meanwhile, Brody arrives home on the phone to someone, hearing that Buddy is fine and offering to pick him up. Raffy confronts him, saying she found the drugs and angry that he lied to them. Brody begs her not to tell Justin, saying what happened to Buddy was an accident. He says it was an old packet that he forgot he had and he is off them but Justin would kick him out. Raffy says she threw the wrapper away.
Kat runs into Leah and VJ at the Diner; neither are particularly friendly towards her, with VJ quickly walking away and Leah making it clear they intend to fight the decision. Leah points out Kat didn’t call and VJ overhears her saying Luc’s been crying a lot. Ash is rocking Luc upstairs when VJ turns up. Ash asks if he has any ideas and VJ produces a ring on a chain. He says it was Billie’s and he used to settle Luc by dangling it over her bassinet for her to focus on. Ash thanks him and VJ makes it clear he’s doing it for Luc and Billie as he settles her.
That evening, Roo tells Leah she’s settled in. VJ comes home and walks through the living area without a word; Leah admits he isn’t all right. James turns up and asks Roo to go for a walk with him. Meanwhile, Ash and Kat are on the sofa with Luc. Ash thinks it’s the way it should be but Kat looks unconvinced. Patrick is alone on the balcony, looking preoccupied. VJ fingers his wedding ring round the back of his house. Leah joins him and says he did a selfless thing but VJ still isn’t interested, snapping at her and walking away.
Roo and James are walking in silence outside the house. James eventually says that he never wanted to be a dad and Roo would be having a child of his that he’s not ready for: he doesn’t think she should.
