Extended Summary
Justin and Phoebe are walking on the beach. Phoebe notes that Brody’s doing well at work and the till’s balancing. Justin is frustrated that he even has to worry about that. They try talking about Justin accompanying Phoebe to the States but Justin says he needs to make sure Brody’s okay. Phoebe thinks Brody’s been humiliated. Meanwhile, Irene and Roo are also walking together, both shocked by the latter’s pregnancy. Roo comments on how she thought she was having the menopause, on the health risks to both her and the baby, and the fact she’ll be the oldest mum at the school. Irene suggests she might be a bit excited but Roo doesn’t know. Irene says she has to tell James.
That evening, James turns up at the Diner flat, finding Irene and Roo there, and says he was waiting for Roo downstairs. He apologises to Irene for upsetting the party but she tells him not to worry about it and leaves them to it. James says he tried to call Roo, who claims she’s been packing. James thinks she’s still upset about the photo but she tells him not to worry about it and accepts his offer to order dinner in. Meanwhile, Ash and Kat are packing up the farm house and Kat chides Ash for putting kitchen things in the bathroom box. She admits she’s feeling nostalgic about leaving the place. Ash says the two of them and Luc will make new memories. Kat’s expression when she turns away suggests she’s not too keen on the idea.
Roo is barely listening as James reads out the menu options. James asks if she’s going through the menopause and she says no. He says he likes being with her and doesn’t want things to change. Roo distractedly agrees. At the Morgan house, Brody looks through his bag but only finds an empty sachet. He goes to the sink and splashes himself with water. Justin comes out of the bedroom and asks what he’s doing, aggressively pushing him away from the sink and examining the contents. Phoebe also emerges and Tori and Mason arrive home as the two brothers aggressively argue. Despite Tori trying to play peacemaker, Brody pushes Justin away with equal aggression and goes outside. Justin heads back to bed and Phoebe follows Brody. Brody says he hates the way his family look at him, adding that it was just a bit of fun and not the same as their parents. While Phoebe doesn’t agree with his perspective, when he says he won’t do it again she believes him and agrees to talk to Justin.
Next morning, Roo notes to James that she didn’t sleep well. Before she can say more, Ash and Kat turn up, having bought some things for Luc that they want to leave there. Roo tells James she’ll meet him down the beach and tells the couple to put things wherever they want. She looks very uncomfortable as they discuss all the things they’ll need for a baby. Meanwhile, Justin tries to sneak out on Phoebe but she wakes up and asks to talk about Brody. She says he’s worried they’ll never trust him. Justin isn’t sure they will. Phoebe wants him to go easy on Brody and give him his cards back. Justin isn’t convinced Brody isn’t still on drugs. Phoebe doesn’t think there’s any way he can get them and thinks Justin should stop punishing him.
At the Diner, Roo admits to Irene that she didn’t tell James. James himself comes in and Roo says she’s giving Ash and Kat some space. James convinces her to have brunch with him and drags her out. At Salt, Brody is prowling nervously behind the counter. He notices the tips jar and empties the contents. Roo and James turns up and James tells the waitress he’s booked a table, which has champagne on ice. He pours them both glasses, despite Roo trying to ask for a small one, and proposes a toast to them; he drinks and Roo doesn’t. She persuades him to take a phone call, then tries to empty her glass by pouring most of it into a very small plant pot in the centre of the table…with the result that James simply comes back to find a pool of champagne on the table. Roo admits she’s pregnant.
Justin and Tori ask Raffy to take Buddy for a walk, confirming that they’re going to talk about Brody. Justin and Phoebe tell Tori and Mason about what Brody said and that they’re thinking of giving him his cards back. Mason is in favour but Tori isn’t entirely certain he’s off the drugs and Justin isn’t sure either. Phoebe insists he is and Mason thinks if they’re too hard on him the stress might make him go back to drugs anyway. Justin and Tori go to the surf club and find Brody coming downstairs. They tell him that they’ve spoken to Phoebe. Brody insists he’s off drugs and Justin tells him to swear on their mother’s grave. Although he seems uncomfortable, Brody says he swears.
James and Roo are sat on a park bench. James wonders if it happened in Hawaii and Roo says it’s early days, and what Morag thought was the menopause was obviously pregnancy symptoms. James wonders why she didn’t tell him and she says she was in shock and they’d just had a fight. James says he’ll be there for her and Roo says it will be a tough decision. James doesn’t think so and is surprised that she’s thinking of keeping the baby. Meanwhile, Ash and Kat have set up the Diner flat and note they’ll have Luc there the next day. Kat suddenly gets extreme cold feet about the idea of the two of them living there with a baby and his brother. Ash reassures her that he won’t be expecting her to play mum and she seems mollified. Even though she points out Patrick will be there soon, he seems keen to make the most of having the place to themselves.
Justin and Tori arrive home and tell Phoebe and Mason that the chat with Brody went well. A loud bang tips them off to the fact that Raffy and Buddy are hiding nearby eavesdropping. They promise Raffy things are going back to normal. Back at Salt, Brody gets a text from Zannis asking “You up for it or not?” A customer places a note in the tip jar which Brody quickly pockets. He goes through to the back and rings Zannis, saying he’ll meet him in ten minutes.
James and Roo approach the caravan park house. James thinks it’s cut and dried: They haven’t been together long and he never saw himself having children. He also suggests that if Roo wanted children she’d have had them by now. Roo tells him about Martha, how she had her young and gave her up for adoption, and says things are different now. She asks James to think about it. Meanwhile, Brody meets Zannis on a beach path. He shows him the cash he has and says he’ll get more soon. Zannis is unimpressed but suggests Brody can sell. He gives him a package and tells him to either use it or sell it, so long as he gives him the money by Monday.
