Extended Summary

Irene and Nate arrive in the surf club; Nate is taking her out for a meal to take her mind off things. They run into Tori and Justin and there is an awkward conversation before the Morgans leave. Irene comments on things being frosty. Nate admits it’s been like that all week and they’re ignoring the issue. Irene thinks he’d be a fool to lose Tori. Back at the Palmer house, Marilyn explains to John that she’s worried there’s something bad inside him, since people with brain tumours don’t usually go around setting fires. John says it’s best for her to be honest and agrees he shouldn’t stay.

Roo arrives home. Leah apologises for her harsh words earlier, saying she thinks Roo’s brave for handling the pregnancy. Roo apologises for setting her up with the lunch. She notices the two wine glasses and asks if Leah’s had company. Leah admits it was Zac and fills her in. Roo asks if they’re still getting a divorce and Leah confirms they are and it was a mistake. She notes her life’s chaotic at the moment.

John goes to the surf club where he sets up a bed on a couch in the office. Meanwhile, Leah goes round to see Marilyn and apologises for what she said. Marilyn however thinks she deserved it. She explains that she told John how she feels and now he’s gone. Leah hugs her, comforting her. Next morning, Tori is looking at Nate’s contact on her phone. Justin chides her for avoiding him but Tori then gets a text from Nate asking to meet up. Raffy passes through looking for her necklace. Tori remarks on Justin going away soon; even though he points out it’s only for a year, Tori and Raffy want to throw a party. Justin insists it’s not going to happen.

Tori meets up with Irene outside the Diner and tells her she wants her to cater for the party and also attend. Irene points out that the family owns a restaurant but Tori says Justin will be on the lookout for any bookings there. Nate appears and he and Tori briefly discuss the party. Nate thinks they need to clear the air. Tori would rather just agree to disagree but Nate says he’s having to try really hard not to make it a deal breaker. Tori goes home and tells Justin she thinks Nate’s going to break up with her, admitting she ran away.

John attempts to pack away his sleeping bag but eventually gives up on it. Nate notices John in a daze, taking some time to attract his attention. John fills him in. Nate says John wasn’t in control when he lit the fires but John says Marilyn’s scared of him. Although John is doubting it, Nate insists that the operation solved things, as he said at the trial, and offers to talk to Marilyn. Meanwhile, Leah and Roo arrive at the Diner and Leah exchanges strained greetings with Irene. She notices the booking for the party and points out it’s the same day as Madge Wilkins’ 80th. Irene had forgotten but thinks they can do both. Leah says not without extra staff and snaps that she’ll sort it. Irene says she’s taking her break and Roo gives Leah a disapproving look.

Nate tries to convince Marilyn that John’s no danger anymore but Marilyn recalls how angry he seemed in prison. Nate insists they know John but Marilyn doesn’t think they do anymore, saying he used to be rude and mean and wondering if there’s a dark side to him. Nate accepts she’s right to take a step back. Irene turns up to check on Marilyn, who is worried about who’ll look after John now. Nate says there’s room at their place and Irene agrees. Meanwhile, Tori is protesting to Justin that she’s always been there for Nate. Justin looks sceptical and, after some pushing, says she’s always put Nate second: She chose Duncan and Riley over him and now his career’s suffered. Realising he’s right, Tori moans that she’s the worst girlfriend ever. Justin points out it’s not over yet.

Irene and Nate arrive back at the Diner; Irene is fine about John moving in with them but thinks Nate needs to address things with Tori. Nate says that his career’s over but Irene pooh-poohs the idea, saying he can get a job anywhere but there’s only one Tori. Leah calls Irene into the kitchen and apologises for being snappy. Irene offers to cancel the party but Leah says they both know that’s not what the argument was about. She says she can’t forget what happened but is going to try and be calmer. Irene accepts forgiveness will take time. Meanwhile, John is packing his bags. He tells Marilyn that he can’t blame her but knows he’s still a good man and is going to prove it to her.

Justin gets a text from Ava and asks Tori to translate the emojis. He tries to convince himself she’s fine with him leaving. He goes out for a walk as Nate arrives. Tori gives a babbling apology, worrying that when she stops he’ll break up with her. Nate says he won’t and that he also needs to apologise: He let his hurt pride get in the way. They kiss. At the Diner, Justin is looking at photos of himself and Ava on his phone. Roo quizzes him and he explains it’s his daughter who he just got back in contact with. He admits that the year he’s going to be away is a long time for a kid. Roo rings James and leaves a message asking him to call her.

Marilyn sets a table for one at home while John is moving into the nursery at the beach house: Neither look happy at the situation. At the caravan park house, Leah tells Roo about her chat with Irene but stresses things aren’t back to normal. Roo admits she’s changing her mind about James: She doesn’t want to get back with him but her baby will want to know its father and it isn’t up to her. The postman arrives with some registered post for Roo. She opens it and tells Leah it’s a contract from the Mayvers family: James wants out of the baby’s life.
