Extended Summary
Matilda’s got a brand new look and it’s got all the boys interested. Henry suspects it’s a reaction to being dumped by Diesel. Matilda denies it. At school, Diesel tries to apologise, but Matilda is cold. Diesel’s disappointed with her new look – he reckons she’s not a patch on the old Matilda. Matilda is hurt.
Josie’s crying on the beach, upset that she can’t control her situation. Scott sits down to comfort her. Josie would love to confide in him but she can’t. They’re interrupted by Peter who wants to ask her some questions about 1989 – Morag’s had a chat to him. Josie refuses to say anything. She gets a phone call from her friend Jay and suddenly she’s full of confidence. She says Morag was simply lying. Peter says he’ll speak to Jim Wallace. Josie doesn’t care. Why is she so confident?
Peter goes to visit Jim, but he’s disappeared! Morag visits Josie about it, but Josie doesn’t know anything. Later that night Peter gets phone call saying that Jim is dead. Morag thinks Josie had him killed. Peter wakes up Josie at home and it becomes clear that without a written statement from Jim, Josie is in the clear. Morag tells her she may have won the battle, but she won’t win the war.
Matilda is not only dressed different, she’s hanging out with the bad kids and acting up in class. She accepts a party invitation from one of the boys. Henry’s disgusted, he reckons Beth won’t let her. Matilda says Beth won’t know. She wants Cassie to come with her. Cassie reckons there’s no way Sally will let them, and she’s right. Beth sees Matilda in the hall and asks her to take her makeup off. Matilda abuses her and then walks off. Beth talks it over with Hayley and Hayley offers to talk to Matilda (she went through the same thing in her teens), but Beth declines the offer.
Henry abuses Diesel about Matilda. If he wasn’t interested, why did he ask her out? Diesel defends himself, but Henry is determined to find out what his secret is. Later that night, Matilda sneaks out to Cassie’s place to go to the party. Cassie doesn’t want to go because of Sally, but she’s worried about Matilda. Ric says he’ll go, but Cassie will have to cover for him. Ric catches up with Matilda and says he’ll call her mum unless she comes home. Matilda hates it, but has to give in. She gets home okay and narrowly avoids being found out by Beth. No such luck for Ric. Sally catches him and is not happy at all. Where has he been?
