A blast from Mali’s past hits the Bay. John gives Remi food for thought. Justin resists cohabitating with Marilyn.

Extended Summary

Outside his house, John sees Bree follow Remi out of the Lyrik house. Despite her protests, Remi gets onto his bike. Bree stands in front of him, but when he revs the engine, she gets out of the way and lets him drive off. John asks if she’s all right and she admits she’s not sure she is. At the Morgan house, Leah comes home to find Justin playing video games and complains about him having been there all morning. Justin is celebrating having the house to themselves. Leah says it’s good Marilyn and Roo are patching things up and Justin admits he didn’t think of that. He tries to get Leah to play with him, since Theo’s at TAFE all day. Leah is keener when Justin pulls her down into his lap and they end up heading to the bedroom.

Up in Salt, Mali continues to insist to Xander that he’s not going to do any more hen nights. Xander says it would make Felicity and Mackenzie happy. Mali comments on him resorting to emotional blackmail and says Rose wouldn’t be happy about Xander selling him to other women. He says to give him the number and he’ll make the call to cancel himself.

Round the back of the Lyrik house, John tries to convince Bree that Remi will be all right. Bree asks if he’s speaking from experience and John says he is: Decades of it. He claims he could write a book called “Palmer Know Best”. Bree wonders what the book would say and John says to not dwell on what she should have done, think about what to do next and have tea. He offers to provide the last, asking if they have biscuits.

Mali is on the phone to a disappointed hen. He pauses when offered more money but still says no, although he seems guilty about how disappointed she was. He notes Xander will have to think up another way to impress Felicity and Mackenzie, suggesting he dances himself. He’s confident he’ll think of something.

Leah is making drinks as Justin joins her from the bedroom. He reflects on how much of his day off they have left. At that moment, Leah answers a call from Marilyn and, despite Justin begging her to say no, says she’s welcome any time. She tells Justin that Marilyn will be moving back in as soon as Roo’s found a private nurse.

Mali is working back at the board shop when a young woman comes up behind him and notes the service is terrible. Mali turns round, recognising her as Zara, and she asks if she gets a smile. Mali asks what she’s doing there and she says she came to see him. He still doesn’t smile. Later, the two of them are talking outside the surf club. She notes his mum’s been showing photos of the board shop around town and she also kept track of his socials, although she says it doesn’t count as stalking if you grew up together. Xander watches them from the balcony. Zara says his sister Lowana showed her the video of his dancing and asks for a hug. Xander continues to watch as Mali complies.

Remi drives along a road, reaching a secluded cove. He stands on the beach, looking teary. Outside the Lyrik house, John joins Bree with tea and biscuits. Bree notes she thought Remi was doing better, with him and Eden working on new music and him getting session work, but he’s not happy and won’t talk to her about it. She says she doesn’t know how to help him and he was bitter with Kirby. John suggests just waiting for him to come home.

Leah laments to Justin on Roo preferring to hire a nurse than let Marilyn help her. Justin says she was right to ask Marilyn to stay and is a better friend than him. As she leaves for work, Justin answers a call with no ID and is surprised at what they say. Meanwhile, John tracks Remi down to the cove, where he’s throwing pebbles into the water. Remi comments on how John alwys complained about the band. John says he actually got used to the constant racket as long as it was at a sensible hour. Remi says that almost sounded like a compliment and John says it was. He notes Remi has someone kind, smart, beautiful and out of his league who still wants to be with him at home.

Mali is showing Zara round the board shop. She recalls how Elandra covered for them when they sneaked out for a party and how she still uses it to get her to babysit. She takes a photo of the two of them to send to her. Xander comes down with coffee for them both and introduces himself, saying he’s Rose’s brother. Zara knows that’s Mali’s girlfriend and says she’s not his sister. Mali tries to interrupt her, just introducing her by name, but Zara says she’s Mali’s promised wife.

Later, upstairs, with Zara watching from a nearby table, Mali tells Xander he and Zara aren’t actually promised, their parents just used to tell them they were when they were little to wind them up. His community don’t practise arranged marriage but he admits there’s still people back home hoping they’ll marry. Xander asks if Zara’s one of them and thinks he should tell Rose.

At the Diner, Leah serves John another free coffee and asks how things went with Irene and the lawyer. Justin turns up and tells her a radio company called and they have won an all-expenses-paid holiday for two. Leah is sceptical, since it’s happened right after Marilyn’s moving back in, but Justin says it’s a scheme to reward local businesses. John offers to go with him if Leah doesn’t. Leah accepts Justin’s word, as he reveals they have to leave tomorrow.

At the surf club, Zara watches Mali close up. She notes she’s still got the board he made for her. Mali admits he threw all her stuff out when they broke up, reminding her she left. Zara says she thought of getting rid of the board but it has her mum’s story on it. She says she’s happy to sleep on the couch if he doesn’t have a spare room. Mali is slightly surprised that she expects to stay with him.

Remi pulls up outside the house on his bike and Bree comes round from the garden. He says he wasn’t sure she’d be there and she asks where else she’d be. Later, they talk inside, with Bree pointing out to Remi that he’s back working in the music industry. Remi says he’s glad of the sessions but compares it to Bree, having worked hard to be a critical care doctor, becoming a school nurse. Bree says if it’s making him feel bitter he should do something about it.
