Extended Summary

Xander and Mali have just finished a surf and make plans to go get a pizza. Ava approaches and asks Mali about taking surf lessons. Mali says he might be able to fit her in tomorrow. When she gives her name, Xander realises she’s Justin’s daughter and Mali wonders if he’s the reason she’s doing it. Ava says it’s to impress her boyfriend.

Back at the Morgan house, Justin laments to Theo how he ignored all the red flags and everyone else could see what was going on. Theo says Ava told him what he wanted to hear. Justin says he’ll get Ava to apologise before admitting he doesn’t know how to deal with it. Theo says Justin dealt with him all right but Justin says Theo wanted to talk. He convinces Theo to stay, saying Ava listens to him.

Xander and Mali head up to Salt with Mali bantering about Xander leaving him an online review. He says he’s going to check on Mackenzie. In fact, Mackenzie is at home. Mali calls her, saying he’s just heard she’s not in work today. He asks about Gabe’s first chemo session but Mackenzie just gives brief answers and then ends the call. Mali tells Xander he has to bail.

Mali heads to the farm house to see Mackenzie, saying the front door was open. Mackenzie tells him that Gabe’s gone and isn’t coming back. She gestures to the note and recites its contents: He can’t give her a future and can’t bear to see how much him being ill is hurting her. She tells Mali not to comfort her. Later, Mackenzie comments on being back here again, telling Mali about how her father paid Gabe to break up with her before and he did it in a note then too. Mali suggests she must have loved him to take him back and maybe he just needs time. Mackenzie replies that Gabe doesn’t think he has time and says she was too honest about not coping with his illness.

Theo suggests to Justin they should look for Ava but Justin doesn’t want to deal with it in public. Ava arrives and wonders if Theo’s back for good. Justin asks her about the selfies. Ava asks if Theo and Kirby have broken up, saying she saw them arguing. Theo asks if she was spying on them. Ava tells Justin that she and Theo are together, which Theo denies. It’s only when Justin shouts at her to sit down that she realises things aren’t going the way she expected. Later, Justin tries to suggest Ava should see a therapist. Ava is still trying to insist that she and Theo love each other but Theo tells her that he loves Kirby. Justin sends Ava to her room. Theo says this is what he’s been dealing with.

Mackenzie gets up during the night to find Mali asleep on the couch with the TV showing a sports program. She turns it off and Mali wakes up. She laments how Gabe left but doesn’t want Dean told. Mackenzie encourages Mali to leave but he says he wants to stay. She offers him Dean and Ziggy’s room but he says he’s fine with the couch. Meanwhile, a black-clad Ava sneaks into the Lyrik house. She finds the biscuits she made and crumbles them all over Kirby’s keyboard, then smiles on finding Kirby’s lyric notebook.

Next morning, Justin thanks Theo for backing him up and staying over but wants to give it a go on his own now. Theo excuses himself as Justin suggests Theo might be coming home soon. He calls out to Ava but, on getting no response, checks her room and obviously finds her gone. He heads to the coffee cart where Irene and Marilyn are serving Xander and his ambulance partner Jamie. Marilyn tells him Leah’s having a lie-in and Justin says he’s looking for Ava, which Irene tries to catch up with. Xander mentions her talking to Mali. Justin says she wouldn’t be able to afford a surf lesson but asks for his details anyway.

Theo arrives at the Lyrik house and quickly notices the biscuit scattered everywhere. He is horrified to see Kirby’s notebook with the pages torn out and screwed up. At the farm house, Mali chats with Justin on the phone, saying Ava never followed up on her approach. Mackenzie appears and Mali offers her some scrambled eggs. Mackenzie says she’s going away for a while: She’s going to visit her mum and isn’t sure after that. She reiterates that he’s not to tell Dean and asks him to keep an eye on the place. Mali is uncertain but she says it’ll be empty anyway.

Near the beach, Theo is on the phone to Kirby, saying some of the pages might be salvageable and to give Remi and Eden his love. Ava approaches, having been asked to meet him, and says she was on the beach avoiding Justin. Theo asks why she trashed Kirby’s house and Ava says Kirby was getting in the way. She says she knew they had a connection when he started messaging her. Theo says he was just being polite to a fan and didn’t know her. Ava insists he was singing to her and Theo snaps that he wants her to stay away from him and Kirby. Ava walks away and Theo follows, trying to get her to go back to Justin. Ava accuses him of leading her on and using her. A random van driver, Conor, pulls up and asks Ava if Theo’s hassling her. Despite Theo trying to stop her, Ava gets into the van and drives off with him.

Mali meets up with Xander and Jamie near the beach and thanks Xander for the review, As they talk, a dodgy looking character tries to break into their ambulance. Xander and Jamie see him and chase him off. They explain to Mali that he was after the drugs. At the Morgan house, Justin is having a panicked phone call to Leah about not being able to find Ava. Theo comes hurrying in and tells him about Ava taking off in a random guy’s van.
