Extended Summary

Ziggy and Dean are eating on the balcony at Salt. Ziggy ignores a call from Maggie. Dean tries to make small talk, asking about work and saying the surf’s meant to be good tomorrow, but when Maggie calls again, Dean says it’s the fourth time and Ziggy can’t ignore her forever. Ziggy threatens to walk if he says anymore so they eat in silence. Back at the Diner flat, Colby comments to Mackenzie that he thought Bella was getting better but they seem to be back to square one. He wonders why she thought she was ready to sleep with Nikau. Mackenzie suggests it made her feel like a normal teenage girl. Colby wonders if he did the right thing leaving her there and Mackenzie assures him it’s not forever and notes actions speak louder than words with Bella.

Ari arrives at Salt and looks around. He sees Dean and Ziggy leaving and asks if they’ve seen Mackenzie. Dean says she isn’t working. Ari says they didn’t exactly agree to meet and abruptly walks past the pair, buying a beer. At the Morgan house, Justin and Leah are clearing empty cardboard packaging out of the nursery. They note they just need to get the shelves up and get the surprise ready; Leah reminds Justin she’s working tomorrow. Justin notes Tori isn’t good at waiting for surprises: She once shook a Christmas present so hard she broke it, and it wasn’t even hers. After looking in the fridge for a while, he says there’s nothing there that inspires him and offers cereal for dinner. Leah decides to take over the cooking.

Neither Colby nor Mackenzie are up to finishing the pizza so Colby says he’ll have it for breakfast. Mackenzie starts clearing up and gets a text from Ari saying he’s at Salt and wondering where she is. Dean and Ziggy turn up and Dean says someone was looking for Mackenzie at Salt. Mackenzie leaves. Colby chats to Dean about Bella for a few moments before going to bed, leaving Dean and Ziggy to watch a movie. Mackenzie arrives at the surf club to find Ari coming downstairs; she offers to get him something to eat, saying she was visiting a friend, but he decides to go. Mackenzie sees Ben working late; he says he has bookwork to do and she comments on him heading home to his “lovely wife”.

At the farm house, Maggie is telling Roo that Ziggy is spending all her time with Dean and Ben is sleeping in Coco’s room, She worries about what will happen if the paternity test results don’t go the way they’re hoping. Ben turns up and notes he thought Maggie would be in bed. Roo leaves and Maggie asks Ben if he wants her to heat up dinner in the oven. He doesn’t answer. Maggie brings up the paternity test results and worries how he will react if it’s bad news. Ben says it’s not her concern and heads off to bed. Next morning, Ziggy is on the beach with her board. Ben emerges from the water and briefly chats to her about the surf before saying that, whatever the results, he loves her and is her dad. Ziggy doesn’t respond, just saying she’s going for a surf. She passes Justin, who asks Ben to help him with the shelves.

Leah serves Roo at the Diner and chats to her about the victim impact statement. Maggie arrives and tells Roo that she tried to speak to Ben but he refused to discuss things with her and Ziggy won’t let her be there for her either. At the surf club, Colby runs into Mackenzie and thanks her for her help the previous night. He notes that since Bella’s over sixteen the centre aren’t obliged to tell him anything about her progress. Ari emerges from the gym and establishes that Colby was the friend Mackenzie was with. He leaves, while Colby goes into the gym for his physio. Dean, watching from the board shop, comments to Mackenzie on how awkward that was.

Justin and Ben arrive back at the Morgan house. Justin is set for work but can also see Ben has something on his mind. Ben explains that Maggie slept with his brother Marco twenty years ago, around the time she got pregnant with Ziggy, and now Ziggy’s worried he isn’t her father. Later, Justin gets coffees as Ben fills him in on the details: The party, Maggie getting drunk after seeing him chatting to another girl and how she says it was only the once. He admits he’s not even thinking about Maggie and is just worried about the effect it will have on Ziggy.

Ziggy finds Maggie waiting at the bottom of the steps to the Diner flat. Maggie begs Ziggy to talk to her, saying she can’t lose her over one stupid mistake. Ziggy replies that she might be the stupid mistake. She says she’s going for a shower and tells Maggie not to follow her. Later, in the flat, she tells Dean she wants to move in permanently. Dean says she’s always been close to Maggie but Ziggy isn’t sure that’s true since Maggie’s been lying to her her whole life. Dean says she can stay as long as she wants to.

Mackenzie and Colby chat at the surf club. Colby thanks her for listening last night and notes she was right to turn him down when he tried to get back with her, saying it’s the wrong timing and he’s glad just to have a friend. He leaves, leaving Mackenzie looking thoughtful. Soon after, she meets Ari on a bench, thanking him for coming and apologising for things getting weird. Ari says it was fun while it lasted. Mackenzie seems taken aback and both of them look disappointed as she leaves.

Ziggy is packing bags at the farm house. Maggie arrives back and Ziggy says she’s just there for clothes and doesn’t want to talk. Maggie has the post and says the results letters have arrived, including one for Ben. She suggests calling him so they can open them together. Ziggy says it’s not Christmas. She takes her letter and leaves. At the surf club, Dean chats to a distracted Ben about a board order. Maggie arrives with Ben’s results letter and tries to get him to open it with her but he says he’ll do it later. Dean asks if Ziggy got a letter and Ben sends him to check on her.

Ziggy is sitting on a bed in the flat. Dean arrives back and sees first that she’s in tears and then that she hasn’t opened the letter. Ziggy says that she can’t and asks what if Ben isn’t her father.
