Thanks to Alex, Mason gets a second chance. Robbo’s need for justice for his family gets complicated. Ben’s mental health struggles reach breaking point.
Extended Summary
Holding Dylan hostage, Robbo gets his henchmen to put down their weapons and keys and lock themselves in the cage. He also gets Dylan to hand over the key to the padlock for his own chains, then once he’s free, he chains Dylan up. He notes he’s been waiting for this for a long time after what Dylan did to his family. Dylan replies that it wasn’t him. Near the beach, Leah, Justin and Ava come running up to Mason, asking for a ball. Mason doesn’t have one but suggests they try the surf club shed. He describes Ava as his favourite niece; Ava says she won’t be when Tori’s baby is born and Mason says he’ll have two favourite nieces. After the others have gone, Alex approaches Mason. He quips that Willow isn’t with her and she tells him she’s arranged him an internship interview at two o’clock. Mason is shocked at the short notice but heads off to get changed.
At the Diner, Marilyn finds Ryder doing some last minute cramming before the start of the HSC. He manages to convince her to give him a free doughnut. At the school, Roo and Maggie are laying out exam papers. Roo can see Maggie has something on her mind and Maggie tells her about her run-in with Ben, saying she’s not sure if there’s anything else she can do. They let the students in: Ryder ends a phone call with Raffy and hands his phone to Roo.
Mason meets Alex at the hospital. He wonders how the interview came up. Alex explains that the internship that he was going to interview for before he was arrested was never filled, thanks to Tori leaving and her being new. Mason is pleased that she vouched for him. Later, Alex finds Mason after the interview. Mason is unhappy, saying no-one said anything and they were just being kind. He doesn’t think he had enough preparation but Alex thinks he’d have just been more nervous if he had. She reminds him that if it comes to the worst, he still has the WA placement.
Justin explains to Ava that she’ll be there for a while and that Brian and Nina still want to see her. Ava is disappointed she didn’t get to speak to Raffy. Leah rejoins them with the ball. Ava scolds Justin for handling it. Justin tries to kick it but it goes wildly off course and is caught by Ben. He and Justin briefly chat with Ben recalling seeing Ava upset earlier; Ben notes Coco is starting her HSC today. He watches for a bit as Leah, Ava and Justin kick the ball between them. Later, they head to the Diner but Ava wants to do more practice for her new team, asking Justin if they can find someone locally. Justin is thrown but agrees. After Ava’s gone, he admits to Leah that he hadn’t realised he’d have to sort out school, soccer and play dates and wonders when he’ll have time to work. Leah says she has another idea.
Dylan tells Robbo that he knew they were making threats against his family but never thought they’d go through with it. Robbo is sceptical of the idea that Dylan wasn’t part of it, thinking he’s desperate to save his life. Dylan confirms he is but says he’s also telling the truth. He says he lost a son and would never put anyone else through that. At the school, the exam has finished. Roo checks on Ryder and tells him she’s proud of him. She asks Maggie if she wants to discuss Ben but Maggie says she has prep work to do. Roo suggests they do it together and discuss Ben at the same time.
At Salt, Ben is on the phone to Coco, recalling how a year ago she needed him to walk her to exams. She has to go he hangs up. He goes back to the caravan park where he sees lots of people together. He goes into his van and starts packing, then gets out a notepad and starts writing. He heads up to the house, where Ryder is on his own. He says he’s returning the keys, since it’s time to move on. He leaves a note for Alf with them.
Dylan tells Robbo he’ll tell him if he spares him. Robbo isn’t keen on letting him go so Dylan offers to turn himself into the feds, saying prison is better than being dead. He tells Robbo to either call the feds or finish it. Back at Salt, Alex has called Mason to join her and offers to buy him a beer. Mason says he’s still a loser but Alex tells him she’s there to formally offer him the job. There are conditions however: He needs to update his clinical skills so will be on reduced duties for the rest of the year. Mason suggests they invite Willow to join them. Alex realises he knows what happened and says they’re just friends. Mason asks why she’s avoiding Willow in that case but Alex reminds him she’s his boss now.
Ava is on the phone at the caravan park house, agreeing with Raffy that she’ll stop Mason eating all the ice cream and give everyone hugs. Leah rejoins her and Justin, and checks on Ryder’s study. Roo and Maggie arrive and Leah tells them she’s moving in with Justin and Ava for a while. The trio leave and Ryder mentions Ben moving out as well. Roo finds the note to Alf, in which Ben thanks Alf for trying to help him. Ben is sat in his car near the beach, fingering his wedding ring. He gets a call from Maggie but ignores it and drives off. At the farm, Maggie is having a frantic phone conversation with Ziggy when Ben turns up. Ben says he doesn’t know what’s wrong with him and needs help.
Dylan wonders why Robbo’s hesitating. Robbo remembers Victor threatening Jasmine and realises it was him: He was a nobody who wanted to be top boss. Dylan suggests they end it together.
