Extended Summary
Dean has apparently just finished a surf on the beach; his hand is shaking. Willow calls out to him, reminding him he has to keep an eye on Bella after school and pointing out she’ll be home soon. Dean is annoyed that Colby’s working all the time. Willow has to go to the gym to do some paperwork but wonders if she should do it with Bella. Dean insists he’s okay and can handle it. At the Morgan house, Justin pokes his head out of his bedroom and calls out several times asking if anyone’s home before letting Leah out. He wonders if they should have a signal like “The chicks have flown the eagle’s nest” and Leah corrects him that a baby eagle is called an eaglet. Justin gives her a fright by pretending Tori’s just come home, then notes they’ve not done anything wrong. Leah says she has to get to work but suggests they meet for a drink later, kissing him on the cheek as she leaves.
John joins Irene and Marilyn at the Diner and they tell him about the news item. John points out the base is massive so chances are Jett wasn’t involved. Marilyn has sent Jett an e-mail with no reply. John suggests communications might be down so decides to call Jett’s unit in Sydney. Leah arrives and gives a jarringly cheery greeting. Upstairs, Dean gets the jitters again while trying to make a sandwich and finds he only has one pill left. Bella emerges from her room and says she needs to use the table, which Dean has spread his things on. She asks him to help her with maths homework but he insists he’s no use. Willow joins them; although annoyed that she didn’t trust him, Dean decides to go for a shower.
John gets off a phone conversation with an army sergeant and tells Irene and Marilyn that he was right about communications being down. There have been casualties at the base but Jett isn’t listed as one of them. Marilyn considers this no news, worrying that the army aren’t telling them something or Jett is lying under rubble. Irene sends them out for some air. Maggie passes them and is puzzled by their downbeat mood. Upstairs, Bella tries to upload her homework, which Simone told her how to do, but it isn’t working. Willow suggests she call Simone. Dean says he’s going out, saying he has community service stuff he forgot about. Bella tells Willow she can go too. Willow tells her to try Simone again.
Nearby, Dean makes a phone call, telling someone that he needs more pills and will meet them in an hour. Up in the flat, Willow has brought Maggie to Bella, who explains about Simone not answering her phone. Although Maggie bristles at the mention of the name, she asks Bella to show her what she’s been doing. Willow tries to call Dean. Maggie realises Bella has been trying to upload more than one file at a time. Bella tries it with only one file and is delighted when it works.
Leah is humming happily to herself as she’s wiping tables. Justin comes in and asks Irene for a coffee; Irene comments on Leah being away with the fairies. Leah says they’ve got no more pasta so takes over serving Justin while Irene makes some more. Justin thinks she’s being a bit obvious and suggests they meet for a drink at Salt at seven. Meanwhile, Willow and Bella are walking by the road. Bella says people don’t need to keep an eye on her every time Colby isn’t around. They see Dean having a dodgy looking meeting with a River Boy and Willow goes over to talk to him. He claims he finished the community service stuff and just met the guy by accident. Willow tries to quiz him but he refuses to talk and says he’ll take Bella back to the flat. Willow insists on keeping Bella with her, saying they’ll meet Dean back there.
John and Marilyn are sat on a bench; Marilyn is staring at her phone but John reminds her she’ll get an alert if there’s news. Marilyn wishes Jett could have been a librarian or an accountant or a vet. John jokes that she’d worry about him being bitten by a snake or a tax dodger before asking if she really wishes Jett had a different job. Marilyn says she’s proud of him but also scared. Back at the flat, Dean has got himself a drink and swallows two pills. His hand continues to shake at first but then he lies back and relaxes.
Justin and Leah have met at Salt, with Leah saying she’s had a shift in attitude. Justin asks why, since it was just fun. Leah replies it was more than that: He’s fantastic, she’s loving being a couple again, can’t wait to meet his daughter, thinks they should move in together and get a mortgage…then laughs at his horrified expression and says she’s not going to fall in love with him after one hook-up and it was just no strings fun. Justin suggests that if it happened again, it’d still be fun… Cut to them arriving back at the Morgan house. In between passionate kisses, Justin confirms Tori’s at work, Mason’s at the movies and Brody’s in the dog house, as they head into the bedroom.
Some time later, Leah is getting dressed while Justin lies in bed. Leah compares it to a gym session and declines to arrange a next meeting, reminding him it’s no strings. Justin pulls her back onto the bed but they are interrupted by a text from Ryder asking Leah to get milk on the way home. Justin fails to convince Leah to stay or to let him walk her to the door. She jokingly asks if they’re having a la carte or buffet at their wedding. Meanwhile, John and Marilyn are back home, with Marilyn wondering if they should give the army another ring. John says they’ll call them if they have news and suggests Marilyn pick a movie to watch. Marilyn goes to answer a knock on the door and calls John when she sees a soldier there. In a formal manner, the soldier tells them Jett has been critically injured and is being flown to a hospital in Germany.
Dean is asleep in the flat but has rapid fire flashbacks including Willow lying injured, Colby running through the bush and the burning car. He sits up, his expression blank. He finds Bella waiting outside the surf club with a pizza and tries to drag her into his car, saying he’s taking her to Ross and she needs to know the truth. Bella struggles and Willow arrives, pulling Bella away and slapping Dean round the face. Dean comes to, confused, saying he doesn’t know what’s wrong with him and he’s sorry.
