Extended Summary

Colby is alone in the flat when Bella and Willow turn up. Bella tells him about Dean saying he was taking her to Ross and Willow confirms he seemed out of it. Bella wonders if he really does know where Ross is and Colby quickly dismisses the idea. Dean arrives and says he’s sorry. Colby drags him outside down the beach and demands to know what he was playing at, wondering if he was feeling guilty. Dean says he doesn’t know what he was doing but shrugs off Colby asking what’s going on with him and walks away. He goes through a park area, where he takes out the pills and holds them over a bin but ultimately keeps them.

At the farm house, Ben and Maggie quietly comment on the fact Ziggy’s barely moved from the sofa and reflect on how happy she and Brody seemed to be. There’s a knock on the door and Ziggy says she doesn’t want to see anyone. Ben finds Brody there and is unimpressed. Brody wants to see Ziggy but Ziggy wants him to go. Ben and Maggie refuse to let Brody into the house; when he wonders if Ziggy’s okay, Ben asks how she could be. Brody leaves. Next morning, Leah is preparing some muffins for Purple Day at the Diner. Irene comments on her still being chirpy but Leah says sometimes a smile is just a smile. John and Marilyn come in and tell them the news they got the previous night: Jett is injured and has been taken to a US military hospital in Germany. John is frustrated to get a text about a delivery at the surf club. Leah offers to help him take it, leaving Marilyn with Irene.

At the Diner flat, Bella admits she couldn’t sleep and again wonders if Dean knows where Ross is; Colby insists he doesn’t. Bella heads off to school as Willow arrives and asks Colby if he’s seen Dean, since he wasn’t in his van. She tells Colby about bringing Karen to see him and the sleeping pills, saying Dean’s struggling and they need to find him. Outside the surf club, Dean is having a drink and seemingly doesn’t see the call on his phone. Ben sees him and notes they have a lot to do. Brody approaches and says he knows everyone hates him but he needs to talk to Ziggy and tell her what happened, and he can’t do that if Ben and Maggie keep stopping him. Ben replies that Brody’s got no right to make demands and tells him to leave.

Ziggy is surprised to find Maggie hasn’t gone into work. Maggie says she needed to see her first and offers her a lift into town. Ziggy doesn’t want to see Brody or anyone else who knows and just wants to sit in front of the telly. Dean turns up, having got permission from Ben to leave work to see her. Maggie is persuaded to go. Ziggy comments on the embarassment coming to her. Dean offers to deck Brody for her. At the surf club, Brody is carrying a delivery through from Salt. He sees Leah and guesses she knows, telling her not to judge him (which she says she wasn’t going to). Leah joins John and Ben at the kiosk and tells Ben she’s sorry about Ziggy. John has told Ben about Jett and is hoping for further news. Leah offers to put the drinks away while John gets things sorted.

Colby leaves a phone message for Dean. Willow comes back and says a lifeguard at the surf club told her that Dean hadn’t been in work. She has left a message for Ben. Colby asks how long it’s been going on. Willow says a few weeks, recalling Dean failing to turn up to work and forgetting to do things, and how she saw him buying something from one of the boys. They ponder if he’s on drugs. At the farm house, Dean’s hand shakes as Ziggy gets him a drink. She recalls how she suspected Brody and Simone for weeks and now wonders if Brody ever loved her or if it was all a lie. Dean points out only Brody can tell her but Ziggy doesn’t want to be a blubbing mess in front of him. She asks Dean about his sleepwalking, suggesting he take his own advice and face up to it.

Colby and Willow walk away from the flat; Willow has heard back from Ben about Dean going to see Ziggy. Dean approaches (his car is parked nearby) and apologises for the previous night, saying he’s in trouble. They head back to the flat where Dean tells them about digging up Ross’ body and the confession letter. Colby is horrified as Dean insists it must be the pills. The others ask why he didn’t go to a doctor and Dean says he couldn’t say he was having trouble sleeping because they’d killed someone. He is reluctant to give up the pills but Colby insists they’re not helping him. Dean hands the pills over and Colby pours them down the toilet before saying they’re going to get him through it.

Marilyn and John meet the army chaplain on the balcony at Salt. He tells them that there were casualties in the explosion, including members of Jett’s platoon. Jett was close to the explosion and suffered severe shrapnel wounds; he is now having exploratory surgery. The chaplain doesn’t have any more information. Marilyn hurries away and John says they need time to process it. Meanwhile, Ziggy tentatively approaches the cottage. She takes a deep breath and goes inside. Looking around, she sees a board of photos and other mementoes; photos of her with her family and Brody, including their wedding photo. She breaks down in tears.

Dean is loading up his car outside the Diner with Colby and Willow. Willow thinks he should go to hospital but Dean says they would ask too many questions about where he got the pills from. He and Colby are going to hole up in a motel room together so he can go cold turkey. Willow is sceptical since they don’t even know what was in the pills. Bella arrives and Dean apologises for scaring her. Bella asks if he knows where Ross is and he says no. They explain Colby is taking him away to sort him out and Willow will stay with Bella. Soon after, Colby and Dean are in the motel room with everything they need. Dean says Colby can go but Colby says they’re in it together.

Irene and Marilyn walk on the wharf. Marilyn says she knew something would happen to Jett and thinks she should have tried harder to stop him going. Irene points out it was his choice. Marilyn wants to go and see him so Irene suggests she does. Willow and Bella arrive at the Diner; Willow assures Bella Dean will be okay and suggests they get food and then watch a horror movie. Leah serves John nearby as Irene and Marilyn enter. Marilyn tells John she thinks they should go to Jett. John isn’t sure it works that way but agrees to make some calls. Meanwhile, Brody arrives back at the cottage and finds Ziggy waiting outside. She reminds him he wanted to talk.
