John finally unlocks his repressed memories through hypnotherapy. Tori and Justin continue to search for Brody. The camping trip brings Ash and Kat closer together until things suddenly take a turn for the worst.

Extended Summary

Justin turns up at the hospital and tells Tori he has been searching for Brody without success. A patient is brought past on a trolley, unconscious, and Tori notes that she keeps expecting Brody to be brought in. Since her shift has ended, they head off. Meanwhile, out in the bush, Ash is putting up the tent but seems to have a bit left over. Kat comments on how he can fix a car but not a tent. She says she’ll get the rest of the stuff from the car but Ash tells her there isn’t anything else…and their method of going to the toilet involves a shovel. Kat takes it and walks off grumbling. Ash glances over at where Luc is asleep in the tent.

Jett tries to call John but only gets voicemail. Marilyn wonders if they should give him some space and worries that they pushed him too hard. Jett tells her she did what John wanted. He says he’s going to go and look for him and tells Marilyn to keep trying to phone him. Meanwhile, John is by the beach as Marilyn leaves him a message. He has a flashback of riding his bike as a boy and hearing a gunshot.

Kat rejoins Ash, telling him her long absence involved a stinger and ants and to leave it at that. Ash says it sometimes feels like she doesn’t care about Luc. Kat says she’s getting used to suddenly going from dating him to living with him and Luc but she’s getting there. However, that’s not the reason why she’s upset: She’s stuck in the middle of nowhere with no running water, no hair spray and no proper toilet. Ash hugs her.

Justin and Tori are eating at Salt and note that the food quality explains why takings are down. Tori is having to use her own money to pay wages. She wonders why Scarlett knew Brody was using but they didn’t, and wonders if they’re struggling out of witness protection, so determined to stay together that they ignored the problem. She points out that she treats her younger brothers like her children, is obsessed with her career and can’t hold down a relationship.

John finds Jett waiting for him at the beach house. Jett wonders what’s scared him. John is still convinced he killed his father. Jett calls him a quitter and says keeping going is the only way he’s going to get answers and get Marilyn back. They head back to the Palmer house but John is still reluctant, worried that what he remembers will leave Marilyn convinced she shouldn’t be with him. Both Jett and Marilyn convince him to try again.

Marilyn puts John in a trance, testing by lifting his arm which just flops down. She tells him to remember that day before the fire. John says he was happy. His mother asked him to go and get his father from the barn; he recalls the bike was a birthday present. Initially he isn’t sure if he found his father. He hears the gunshot then says he found him but he wasn’t moving (the brief flash we see suggests his father was suspended upright). He went to get his mother but when she saw it she just screamed. She then told him they had to make it look like an accident or they’d never escape the shame. They filled the barn with things and doused it with petrol: His mother fumbled with the lighter so John lit it. Afterwards, his mother told him never to mention it to anyone and forget what had happened. Jett, distressed, tells Marilyn to bring him out of the trance. John looks confused and asks what he said.

Jett checks with John that he doesn’t remember anything, despite the flashes he got last time. He says he just remembers going into the trance and coming out of it. They tell him he didn’t kill his father. Jett seems ready to say more but Marilyn says that’s the important thing and there’s no need to say anything else now. Back at Salt, Justin tells Tori they’re not so different from other families. Tori retorts that he’s controlling, gets angry easily and let the love of his life walk away because he was scared. Justin doesn’t think that’s down to witness protection. They resolve to keep looking for Brody.

Jett walks John home. John says Jett doesn’t need to stay with him and should keep Marilyn company. He wonders what they’re not telling him and what could be worse than killing his father. Jett says they’ll talk in the morning. He heads home and tells Marilyn that John’s confused. Marilyn thinks they shouldn’t tell him. Jett protests that he needs to know or he’ll never understand why he lit the fires. Marilyn insists that it’s best forgotten.

Kat is starting to relax and comments on the quiet…meaning Luc. Ash checks on her and finds her asleep. Kat says she brought some wine but Ash suggests they go to bed…and not necessarily to sleep. Next morning, they wake up together. Ash is concerned that Luc didn’t wake them and Kat suggests maybe she slept through. Ash finds Luc is asleep but also notice that she’s pale. He becomes frantic as he realises he can’t wake her…
