Extended Summary
VJ is attempting to fix the car tyre, which burst when Hunter drove over some rocks. Hunter and Olivia are arguing about his meltdown which results in VJ literally talking to himself about the fact he isn’t getting any help. When Olivia finally pays attention to him, he explains that he can’t undo the wheel and it’s getting dark. Meanwhile, John is in a session with Bailey at the hospital. Bailey asks him what he felt when he went to his old house, pointing out the idea was to unearth memories. John says nothing seemed familiar. Bailey asks what he thought when he saw the grave. John says he thought it was wrong, since it meant his father died the day after his tenth birthday. He wants to know why he killed his father.
Ash is rocking Luc in the Diner flat. Kat comes home but says she’s only there to change and then go back for the overnight shift. Ash is annoyed, especially since Luc won’t stop crying, but when she explains about Brody robbing Scarlett and then disappearing, he relents, saying he might go for a walk. Later, Ash has Luc up on the headland when Leah approaches. She suggests a change of scenery might quieten her. Ash says that was the idea of going out. Leah suggests she’s not seeing much apart from the apartment and taking her away for the night might help. She adds that babies pick up on stress and that’s why Luc was calmer at Irene’s. She then gets a phone call from VJ.
John and Bailey rejoin Jett and admit they didn’t get anywhere. Bailey says it could take years to unlock the memories. Jett asks if there’s anything else they could try and Bailey suggests hypnotherapy. He offers to get some information but doesn’t need to since John decides to try it. Bailey says it’s not something he offers but he will refer them to a clinic in the city. However, they might have to wait a month. Later, Jett tells Marilyn about it. Marilyn notes that she tried to learn hypnotherapy once but wasn’t very good at it. Jett asks her to help John but Marilyn doesn’t want to get his hopes up if it doesn’t work. Jett tells her to practise on him.
Leah drops Hunter and Olivia off at the beach house. Olivia thanks her but Hunter is in a sullen mood. Leah tells him that Zac didn’t give him the car to wreck it and he should show more respect. John emerges from his bedroom as Hunter tells Leah that she didn’t show Zac any respect and drove him out of town. Leah walks out. Later, at the Diner, she complains to VJ about Hunter’s attitude. VJ asks her not to be too hard, explaining about Hunter not talking to anyone and how they took him out there to try and get him to open up.
At the police station, Murray tells Kat a story about how he tried to nudge a wombat out of the road with his baton only for the wombat to grab it in its mouth and run off with it. Ash comes in with Luc, who Murray is happy to look after while they chat. Ash wants them to go camping with Luc. Kat says she’s too busy. Ash is sceptical given what he just heard but Kat says there’s a difference between a two minute chat and disappearing for days. Next morning, Marilyn is trying to hypnotise Jett, telling him to imagine himself in a forest. However, Jett doesn’t respond particularly well to it.
John looks at a photo of the grave on his phone. He has a flashback of himself as a boy playing with a lighter. Olivia comes through and tells Hunter that she’s going for a coffee. She prompts him to ask her to get him one, then tells him that she’s not going to help him avoid Leah and he can get his own. After she’s gone, John tells Hunter that if he’s not careful everyone else will walk out on him. Hunter goes to the Diner to apologise to Leah. She is initially slightly standoffish until he says he doesn’t want to lose her too. She tells him Zac’s still his dad and even though they aren’t together she’s still his step-mum. Hunter says he has no family and feels like he doesn’t belong. Leah tells him they’re his family and hugs him.
Marilyn is trying another technique with Jett, getting him to hold his hands slightly apart and focus on the space between them. He fails to go into a trance and Marilyn says there’s nothing else they can try. Meanwhile, Hunter arrives home with flowers for Olivia and apologises for his recent behaviour. He says he doesn’t know how he feels and Olivia jovially notes that that counts as talking about your feelings. Hunter wonders if there’s anything else bothering her and she says she’s worried he’ll get angry again; he assures her he won’t. He goes to reply to Zac’s message. He starts off typing ‘Dear Zac’ then changes it to ‘Dear Dad’ and talks about how he misses and loves him.
At the Diner, Jett tries to convince Marilyn to give the hypnotherapy another go. John comes in and Jett points out how lost he looks. John is slightly startled when they approach him. Jett tells him about their hypnotherapy experiment and, despite Marilyn stressing it didn’t work, John also asks them to try again. Soon after, all three are at the Palmer house where Marilyn again tries and fails to put Jett into a trance. John asks her to try it on him anyway.
Kat arrives home and tells Ash they haven’t found Brody or Zannis. She realises he’s packed and he says he and Luc are going camping with or without her. Kat repeats her reasons for not going but Ash repeats his counter-argument and asks her to join him. A short time after, Ash’s vehicle draws up in the bush and he gets out and looks around. It is only then that we see Kat is with him: She notes that Luc still hasn’t settled. She doesn’t look entirely happy to be there but Ash thanks her for coming.
Marilyn is trying the forest visualisation on John and he is responding a lot more than Jett did, describing his imaginary surroundings. She tells him to think back to the day after his tenth birthday and recover a memory. She asks about the lighter and he remembers having it. He then gets further flashes of the barn on fire and his mother crying and comforting him. He comes to with a start, saying he doesn’t want to remember anymore, and dashes out.
