Extended Summary
Martha is reeling at Suzy’s declaration that she is Hugo’s wife, and is completely floored when Hugo doesn’t deny this. Her anxiety is further raised when Hugo is called down to the police station before he can explain. When Hugo finally gets back home he admits that he’s technically married to Suzy, but says that it was merely a marriage of convenience to facilitate the easy transaction of business. He swears to Martha that he’ll deal with Suzy. Hugo meets up with her and tries to get her to back off, but the bottom line for Suzy is that she wants Hugo back on board for the business. They hit a stalemate when Hugo says that is not going to happen as he wants to stay here with Martha.
Suzy, however, is clearly someone who is used to getting her own way and she has great delight in showing up at Martha’s place and letting slip that she and Hugo were much more than just business partners. It’s too much for Martha who moves out to the farm to do some serious thinking. Hugo doesn’t only owe an explanation to Martha about Suzy, Gina and Xavier are both shocked by the news too, and neither of them takes it very well. Gina is disappointed that Hugo could use marriage in such a mercenary way, and while she feels terrible for Martha she can’t help but be somewhat charmed when Suzy introduces herself to her in the Diner.
Xavier can’t get past the notion that Hugo has reverted to the kind of person he was when he first left home – totally selfish and self-centred and incapable of behaving like a normal human being. Hugo is besieged from all sides and seems unable to placate anyone. Angelo and Bryant quiz Hugo about the ship’s log that was found in his boat-shed. Hugo can’t offer them any new information. He confirms what he said at the time – he can only assume the guy that broke into the boat-shed left it there. Angelo again asks him about Best Fruit Imports, but Hugo can’t shed light on that business either. Angelo’s disappointed, as he can link that company to the boat that the ill-fated asylum seekers were on. When the cops interview Xavier, in Hugo’s presence, Angelo produces an identikit sketch of the man who terrorised Nicole and Geoff on the island many months ago. It’s meaningless to Xavier who’s unable to remember anything new about the man who attacked him, but Hugo surprises everyone by saying that the identikit sketch is the man who broke into the boat-shed.
It seems like a breakthrough to Angelo, but he knows he won’t get far on the case until he can identify the man. All his efforts to do that come up short, and Angelo’s boss isn’t pleased.
