Extended Summary
It’s that one day of the year again: Anzac Day. While Summer Bay pays its respects, Graham watches on from afar. Beth tells Alf that Graham’s never been interested (even though he was in Vietnam). Alf understands – he went through the same thing – and offers to talk to him. Beth doesn’t think it will make a difference. When she tries to talk to him, he rebuffs her. He’s leaving in the afternoon. Beth says she didn’t mean he had to go, but Graham says he knows when he’s not welcome.
Ben’s asked his sister (Cassie’s auntie) Pauline and her kids to come for a family conference on what to do about Cassie. Sally notes the coldness from Cassie to Ben and asks Ric to get Cassie to ease up on him. Ric is about to reveal, but can’t bring himself to betray Cassie. Cassie is upset he nearly gave her up. Ric tries to persuade her to expose Ben but Cassie thinks it’s pointless because it’s over. The two of them decide to help with the Anzac day celebrations, which the rest of the kids are moaning about having to do.
The teens debate the pros and cons of war. Ric reckons it’s glorifying a bad thing. Sally wonders if it’s actually paying tribute to all the innocent people who got caught up in it. Alf shares his experience of being conscripted to Vietnam. Ric’s eyes are opened to the reality of war and the kids have a whole new outlook – they actually want to be involved.
Ric rips into Ben for what he did to Cassie. Ben says Cassie’s a master manipulator, and Ric almost believes him, and then gives him a warning. Cassie sees how agitated Ric is but he can’t bring himself to tell her what he did. Cassie asks him to come to the hospital with her for support. At the hospital Ben makes an impassioned plea to allow Joy to end her life with dignity. Pauline agrees. Cassie’s still not comfortable about it. Flynn advises Ben to hold off until they can get consensus. Pauline decides to head back home with the kids. Ben says goodbye to 12-year old Carla and calls her ‘Angel’. Cassie is chilled to the core – it’s what Ben called her! She realises Ben is abusing Carla as well! Cassie and Ric try to talk to Carla about it but she says “it’s a secret”. Cassie decides it’s time to tell Sally the whole truth…
Alf tries to talk to Graham about coming to the commemoration but Graham isn’t interested. Beth has it out with him and reveals how much she’s always hurt that he never opened up to her. Graham finally cracks and says it was because he was afraid of feeling – the war killed that part of him. But he does love her. He breaks down in her arms. The rapprochement has begun. Later, Graham finds Alf on the beach and the two of them connect over the fallout of war. Beth watches on proudly. It’s a warm and touching Anzac Day end of episode as Waltzing Matilda plays on…
