Extended Summary
Near the surf club, John and Susie are discussing the amount of work that will have to be done for the surf competition, on top of the normal surf club duties. Susie decides to make a start by approaching people for sponsorship. Seeing Willow nearby, she approaches her to ask about the gym being a sponsor. Willow explains that she’s only the temporary manager and Jasmine handles the finances. Susie gives her a flyer to pass on. Later, at the gym, Willow is on the phone to Jasmine telling her about the encounter. Ziggy is setting up nearby and Willow goes over to her, commenting on her new attitude to the gym. She points out they used to be friends and Ziggy asks Willow to spot her.
At the Diner, Roo is talking to Irene and Marilyn about how Alf spent the night by Martha’s bedside at the hospital. She thinks Martha is okay with the treatment and therapy but isn’t sure about how Alf’s handling it. Irene suggests Marilyn go to the hospital with Roo. When they arrive there, they find Alf asleep in a chair. He explains he dozed off while waiting for Martha, who’s in with the “shrink”, discussing her medication and therapy programme. Roo asks if she’s okay with staying in hospital. Alf says she’s coming home today…and he doesn’t care what the doctors say, because he promised her.
Leah and Justin arrive at the Diner and tell Irene that they’re on their way to pick up a bank cheque for their house deposit. Irene is surprised, since she thought the loan fell through, and they explain that Susie put them onto a mortgage broker. Irene is concerned but Leah says that she checked the broker’s references and the figures and thinks Irene should give Susie a chance. At the surf club, John and Susie are discussing the amount of interest in the competition. Susie says there’s one problem: Gerald has gone away for two weeks, so she has no-one to give the money to. She suggests John putting it into his account, but he doesn’t think that would look good. Susie thinks they’ve got enough to retile the bathrooms and maybe update the polaris (John goes wide-eyed at the idea of a sports model with flashing LED lights) but they could lose their sponsors if they delay. John suggests she set up a new account for the money.
Roo and Marilyn are concerned about Alf’s decision, which increases when they hear Alf shouting from the next room that Martha can’t be kept there. They go to investigate and Alf says the staff don’t want Martha to leave. Roo says it’s about what’s best for her but Alf insists Martha’s his responsibility and ushers her away. Back at the gym, Willow and Ziggy discuss their session. Willow reflects that destroying her family like she did felt like wanting to cry and not being able to. Ziggy assures her she did the right thing testifying against Colby and brings up breaking up with Dean. Willow says she doesn’t mind about Ziggy doing that because she broke up with him too and they joke that they should form a club.
Alf, Martha, Roo and Marilyn all arrive at the Diner and Alf asks Irene for a table. Irene asks Martha what she wants to eat but Martha is unresponsive. Alf says they’ll just have tea and dismisses Martha’s behaviour as an effect of her medication. Martha demands to know why they’re looking at her as if she’s crazy and says she wants to go. Alf suggests they sit outside, with Roo going with them. Marilyn tells Irene about Alf discharging Martha against the doctors’ advice. Outside, Roo suggests taking Martha to the hospital or home. Alf tries to tell her to get the teas, but when Roo asks Martha if she wants one, she doesn’t. Alf convinces her to go for a walk instead and gets Roo to let them go alone.
John is putting up posters about the surf comp at the club. Leah and Justin arrive and John suggests Justin take part, but he says he’s still having physio. They wonder where Susie is. At the Diner, Susie is trying to talk to Irene about sponsorship, saying the Reefton Lakes travel agent and the gym have already signed up. Irene says she’ll talk to John about it and isn’t sure why Susie’s involved, but does grudgingly let her leave some flyers. Roo sees them and wonders if Alf knows about it. Susie replies it’s nothing to do with him unless he wants to make a donation. She goes to leave, and runs into Leah and Justin, who give her the cheque and ask about a quick settlement. Roo and Marilyn congratulate the pair but Irene doesn’t join in, quietly telling Marilyn she thinks Susie isn’t all she’s cracked up to be.
John is approached by another committee member, Larry, who congratulates him on his win. Susie appears and starts chatting to Larry about sponsorship. Irene watches from the other side of the room. Willow appears and asks why she’s being creepy. Irene explains she’s concerned about Susie. She looks away when Susie passes, then collars John and tells him Susie’s got everyone wrapped round her little finger. John insists Susie’s doing good for the community. Willow slips upstairs to meet Ziggy and chats to her about the comp, although she doesn’t want to discuss Dean. Ziggy asks about Bella. Willow doesn’t think she’ll forgive her but Ziggy is hopeful.
In the surf club office, Susie shows John the account she set up, which already has nearly $10,000 in it. John tells her about what Irene said. Susie mentions Irene snapping at her when she asked about sponsorship. John hopes it doesn’t drag on, since Irene can get a bee in her bonnet. Susie says she’ll sort it. She goes round to see Irene and suggests they got off on the wrong foot, before saying she got in first with John. Irene is flabbergasted that Susie thinks she’s interested in him and adds that she can see right through her. Susie menacingly tells Irene not to cross her. Irene tells her to get out.
Alf and Martha have returned to the Diner. Roo and Marilyn discuss them at the counter. Roo thinks the best place for Martha is hospital and worries how Alf’s coping. Marilyn asks the couple if they want anything else. Martha thinks Alf believes he made a mistake bringing her home but Alf insists he’s going to keep his promise. He wonders if they should go back to Merimbula before suggesting an idea to help Martha move on. Soon after, Alf, Roo and Martha approach her van at the caravan park. The other tells Martha they’ve seen inside and suggest clearing it out might help her. Martha agrees but wants to do it on her own. Alf and Roo say they’ll be back in an hour. Martha goes inside and is shocked to find Kieran sat waiting for her.
