Evelyn, Matt & Ellie start to say goodbye to their friends and family. Will VJ and Leah crack under the strain? John wants to help the victims of his bushfire.

Extended Summary

With the Diner flat now covered in candles, Matt and Evelyn place their new rings on each other’s fingers. Evelyn says the marriage feels more official but wonders about Zac’s behaviour. Matt, who has taken his shirt off during the chat, sits on the couch and tells her to stop talking about her uncle. She gets on the couch with him and he pulls a cord, causing rose petals to fall on them. They kiss. Meanwhile, Leah asks Zac when he was with Sam. Zac says after Billie’s funeral. He sits next to her and, after a long silence, asks her to say something. Leah reminds him he told her she was crazy for thinking something was going on. Zac insists it was just the once and he’d take it back if he could. Leah tells him to shut up and, when Luc starts crying, goes out.

Alf is putting wood together in the caravan park. John arrives and thanks him for talking sense into him, saying Marilyn wouldn’t have been happy leaving so they’ve decided to stay. Looking around, he notes that business is booming and Alf awkwardly says there’s more demand than usual. John recognises Cal Whitman and his family and Alf admits they lost their farm in the bushfire. John realises all the people are there because of what he did. As he walks away, their eyes are on him. Back home, Marilyn offers him wedding cake to celebrate them staying. John tells her what he saw and she admits Leah told her. John says he needs to take responsibility and make it up to them somehow. Marilyn agrees they should put their heads together.

Zac is alone in the bedroom. He looks out the window and sees Leah with Luc’s pram; she sits down and starts crying. Zac also sits down, his head in his hands. Later, Leah comes up. Zac says she should have called him if things were difficult with Luc but Leah says they were easier without him. Zac asks what she wants him to do and she says she doesn’t care as long as he’s not there. As he leaves, she says she often wondered if they’d last and no-one’s ever betrayed her like he has.

Next morning, Zac turns up. Leah asks what he’s doing there and he says he hasn’t given up on them. Alf comes down and comments on them both looking rough. He asks Zac about the conference and Zac makes polite small talk as if nothing’s wrong, while Leah remains silent. After Alf has gone, Leah asks Zac where he stayed and he says he slept in the car because the vans were full. Leah says if they are tonight he should go to a motel. Outside, John walks into the middle of the families and calls for attention. Cal says he’s got a nerve. John says he takes full responsibility and doesn’t want forgiveness, just to make up for it. He says they can ask for anything they want: Transport on his buses, him working for free to rebuild their houses, cooking. He holds out his number and Cal takes it and thanks him. Alf has come up during the talk and, as John leaves, he gives him a nod of approval.

Zac follows Leah up to the bedroom. Leah tells him to go and be with Sam but Zac insists that’s not what he wants. Leah says she’s too busy with VJ and Luc to worry about him and also says she doesn’t want VJ to know. Zac agrees but maintains he’s sorry. Leah just walks out. Down on the beach, Ellie is getting Raffy to take selfies of the two of them. She says she’s going to miss her and Raffy agrees, saying before Ellie she was lonely and a bit of a geek. Ellie makes her promise to Facetime every day, save up to visit her and never forget her. They take another selfie which is apparently bad enough to make Raffy chase Ellie trying to get her to delete it.

Leah turns up at the Diner, surprising Irene, who can see she has something on her mind. Her first thought is that something’s up with Luc but Leah insists she’s fine so Irene’s next thought is that she’s thinking about Matt and Evelyn leaving. Matt turns up and Irene comments on him looking happy. He asks Leah if she’s all right and the penny drops. Leah makes her excuses to Irene and, as Matt follows her to the door, she makes it clear she’s realised he knew, then walks away. Up in the flat, Matt and Evelyn have finished packing. Evelyn can see Matt has something on his mind. He initially claims he thinks they’re forgotten something and Evelyn quips that he’s got her. He then admits that Zac cheated on Leah and she knows and knows he knew. Evelyn says they can’t leave until Matt’s sorted things with Leah and she’s spoken with Zac.

Evelyn chats to Zac on the patio, saying she’s not there to judge and he has her support. Zac says he wants to sort things out with Leah. Inside, Matt says he should have told Leah but Leah says Zac shouldn’t have put him in that position and he did the right thing. She says things won’t be the same without him and they hug. Soon after, Matt, Evelyn and Ellie have a last sit on the beach. Alf calls that they need to go and Ellie rushes to join him. Matt and Evelyn reflect on how they’ll have forgotten it in a few hours and Evelyn wonders if they’ll be as happy over there. They say they love each other.

VJ is rocking Luc but as soon as he puts her down in her pram and tries to get back to his schoolwork she starts crying again. Leah offers to take her while he has a nap but VJ says he can’t take a break from the assignment. He hunts around for Luc’s dummy while Leah goes to look for it upstairs. Increasingly tense, VJ swipes a cup off the table and it hits the wall next to Luc’s pram. Leah is horrified and takes Luc away. When she comes down later, VJ says he’d never hurt Luc. Leah notes she didn’t know how stressed he was. VJ says it’s just the assignment and not sleeping: He’ll be okay but is relying on her. Leah admits she’s taking on too much too. VJ thinks he can’t do his HSC but Leah says they need to take Irene up on her offer and let her take Luc.
