Summer Bay’s residents all pitch in to celebrate Evelyn & Matt’s wedding. Can John really live with himself if he makes Marilyn leave the Bay? Zac drops the truth on Leah.
Extended Summary
At the caravan park house, Matt and Evelyn tell Alf and Leah their plan to get married before they leave. Matt says that they’re best friends and that’s a good basis for a marriage. To their surprise, Leah doesn’t want to talk them out of it: She says they’re obviously happy and perfect together. Alf agrees. Matt and Evelyn say they’re going to get married tomorrow once Zac’s back and ask Leah to make them a chocolate cake and Alf to perform the symbolic ceremony. At the Palmer house, Marilyn tells John, who is pleased but has other things on his mind: The real estate agent has arranged them a place in the city so they can put their house on the market. He takes a call from him while Marilyn doesn’t look too happy.
At the Diner, Phoebe is putting various suggestions to Justin for their wedding: At the bottom of a canyon, jumping out of a plane or Vegas. Matt and Evelyn come in and Evelyn asks Phoebe to be her bridesmaid, explaining they’re getting married tomorrow at the farewell drinks. Justin and Phoebe are bewildered but happy for them. Next morning, Leah, Evelyn, Justin and Phoebe are getting the farmyard ready for the wedding. Leah chats to Evelyn who wishes Zac was there. They set up makeshift tables and pick flowers; Leah puts one of them behind Evelyn’s ear.
Marilyn arrives at the house and gets roped into helping Evelyn and Phoebe pick a dress; Phoebe has several white dresses to choose from and favours a short one. Kat has lent some jewellery as an apology for not being there. Phoebe also gives Evelyn a skull ring and an adjustable one for Matt. Evelyn picks out one of her own long white dresses. Matt pokes his head round the door and gets told to go and write his vows: He says he already has but gets shooed out anyway. Despite claiming she had, Evelyn admits she hasn’t written hers. At the Diner flat, Matt is on the phone to Roo as he takes some beers out of the fridge. Justin and VJ are with him; Justin gets a text from Ash, who is up the coast with Patrick. They joke about Matt becoming Matt MacGuire and Justin tells them not to give Phoebe ideas since he’s changed his name enough. VJ jokes Matt was bound to find a girl who didn’t dump him sooner or later before they drink up.
People are starting to gather outside the farmhouse. Ellie and Raffy turn up, with Raffy having done Ellie’s hair. Justin compliments her and Raffy takes a photo of Matt and Ellie hugging, saying that’s her job. Alf and Leah turn up with the cake. VJ asks if Luc was all right and Leah says Irene was giving her so much attention she didn’t care she couldn’t go to the wedding. Alf sees John. Matt asks Leah where Zac is. Leah heads inside where she finds Marilyn and Phoebe comforting Evelyn. They haven’t spoken to Zac but they’ve checked the internet and his flight’s cancelled. Evelyn says she can’t get married.
Alf approaches John and calls him a flaming idiot, insisting Marilyn doesn’t want to leave Summer Bay and her friends. John says Marilyn’s supporting him but Alf insists she’s not happy. Inside, Matt has been filled in. He understands Evelyn’s decision and says it can just be a farewell party and he’ll tell everyone. At that moment, Evelyn gets a video call from Zac. He says he’s on the way to the airport and is on the stand by list but it doesn’t look like he’s going to get back. However, he tells her to go ahead with the wedding.
Everyone gathers outside and Alf invites Matt and Evelyn to say their vows. Matt jokes that he knew she was into him when they first met. He says he thought his life couldn’t get any worse but then he kissed her and she made him happier than he thought possible. He promises that even though he’s going to be her husband he’ll always be her best friend. Evelyn thanks him for being patient and says since she let him into her life there’s been colour again: He and Ellie are her family now. (As they talk, John and Marilyn look awkward, Leah looks at a downcast VJ and Justin and Phoebe exchange glances.) The pair exchange rings. Raffy takes photos and she and Ellie hug. Alf pronounces them husband and wife but they’re kissing before he’s finished.
Later, Justin is popping champagne as Alf jokingly tells Evelyn she’s stuck with Matt now. Leah checks VJ, saying it can’t have been easy, but VJ insists he’s all right. Nearby, Justin, Phoebe, Marilyn and Ellie play a throwing game. Ellie tells Matt and Evelyn she’s going to stay at Raffy’s to give them some space; Matt gives her some money. Marilyn goes over to John who reflects that going away would be the coward’s way out and so they should stay.
Leah is inside the house and is surprised and not particularly welcoming when Zac turns up. He says he got lucky with his flight. He adds that he missed her but Leah says they’ll talk later and leaves. Matt and Evelyn emerge from a room and Evelyn is delighted to see Zac. He says he went by the house to get something: Her parents’ wedding rings, which he was saving for her. Evelyn thanks him and goes to give Phoebe hers back. Matt says he hopes Zac isn’t going to tell Leah the truth. Zac says he has to be honest but Matt tells him not to ruin Evelyn’s day. It is getting dark outside and Matt joins Evelyn on a bench, bringing a lantern with him and draping his jacket around her shoulders. They discuss how happy they are and, hearing a song play, get up to dance. They look up at a star above them. Matt says Oscar was with them and they agree he always will be.
Zac returns home and, after hesitating on the landing, joins Leah in the bedroom. She notes he disappeared from the reception and he says he went for a walk. Leah says he hasn’t called her in three weeks. Zac says he still loves her but needs to be honest with her: he slept with Sam.
