Extended Summary
A frightened Phoebe and Justin face Spike. Phoebe has no idea who is he is, but can tell he’s dangerous. Justin protects her and demands to know why Spike is there. Spike laughs at his fear – he’s here to get Justin’s dad’s book. Justin doesn’t know anything about it. Phoebe and Justin start to look through boxes with Spike watching on, but it’s nowhere to be found. Spike warns if Justin doesn’t find this book his whole family will pay, then leaves the pair to continue the search, threatening to return soon – but they better not call the cops, or involve the other Morgan siblings. Now alone, Justin tells Phoebe the rest of the story of their witness protection and that Decker thought his dad may have been collecting information on the Syndicate – maybe that’s what this “book” is. Phoebe pushes Justin to tell Decker about Spike, but Justin’s worried that won’t end it. He wants to be done with this for good, for his family. Phoebe wants to be safe in her own home and pleads with him not to deal with this himself. But the next morning Justin ignores her advice and keeps looking for the book. Phoebe catches him and an argument ensues. Phoebe thinks there’s always a choice with these things and Justin should go to the cops – this is too dangerous to handle on his own. Justin pleads this may be his only chance to end his family’s ties to the Syndicate once and for all. He knows there’s a risk Spike will give up their location to The Syndicate but he has to take that risk if it avoids his family getting hurt. He owes it to his siblings after everything he’s put them through. Phoebe reluctantly caves, much to Justin’s relief, and begins helping Justin look for the elusive book.
Meanwhile, Salt is busier than ever. Ash is heading out as Kat comes in and it’s tense. Ash tries to be friendly but Kat remains guarded. Brody later questions Kat about it and she admits it’s a little awkward since the breakup. She reveals she’s trying out for a job at the university as a criminology tutor – she’s got an interview tomorrow. Brody offers for Kat to bring the interviewer to Salt and he’ll make a fancy lunch for her; make her look good. Kat happily accepts. The next morning on the beach, Kat apologises for her icy demeanour the night before, but Ash dismisses and wishes her luck for the interview. Roo sees this and Kat is again reminded but others how awkward her & Ash are. Kat then asks Roo’s advice for her meeting, seeing as she works at the uni already. But Roo’s smile quickly fades when she hears Kat’s meeting with Professor Calabra – an old school, critical professor. She advises Kat to be herself but Kat’s now worried.
As Phoebe and Justin search through the boxes, Phoebe finds some all photos of Justin and he comments on the bear he’s holding – Bernie – given to him by his father. Justin also takes the moment to sincerely thank Phoebe for helping him, their attraction palpable. As the search continues to prove fruitless, Justin gets more angry, sick of having to live his life like this. Phoebe has to calm him and suggests they take a break. They’re brainstorming outside as to where the book might be and Phoebe suggests that maybe it’s not the book they should be looking for, but some sort of clue Justin’s dad would’ve left that only the kids would know. They cross with Brody and see his van’s been trashed. While Brody immediately thinks it’s Chris (over stealing his customers), Justin & Phoebe know it’s Spike. Justin is tempted to tell Brody, worried for his safety, but Phoebe advises him against it. Instead they head back to continue the search.
At the Diner, business is down and when Chris learns Brody’s been giving away burgers that taste a lot like his own Chris Burger, he’s furious. He accuses Brody of stealing his burger recipe. So when Brody’s catering van is trashed, Brody can only think of one person who would do it. Chris denies any involvement and accuses Brody of trying to make him look bad because he knows his burger is an inferior copy. Brody warns Chris to stay out of his way. Is this the beginning of a war between Brody and Chris?
Kat’s interview starts off shaky and with the Professor’s judgemental questions, Kat thinks she’s lost her chance. Resigned to her fate, Kat reveals she left the police force because she needed a break before the job broke her. Her honesty is a turning point and the Professor admires her ability to recognise the importance of emotional stability. As long as her references check out, Professor Calabra is happy to offer her the job. Kat is thrilled. But she doesn’t count on her old Sergeant telling Calabra about her relationship with Ash, a former criminal. Suddenly Kat’s credibility is ruined and she loses the job before she’s even started. Her attempts to make a new life have failed and she’s devastated. When Ash asks if she’s okay, he’s cut down. Kat tells him she lost the job because of him – one bad decision and she’s still paying for it.
More determined than ever Justin and Phoebe search for a clue to find the book. Going through the Morgan childhood momentos, Phoebe finds Bernie the bear and comments on his collar with the word “Waldo” on it. Justin’s confused, he’s never had a collar on before. He turns over the tag and finds a phone number – could they have found a clue? But when Phoebe goes to call the number, there’s not enough digits for it to be a phone number. Justin is getting frustrated again but Phoebe and Justin agree to keep going – they’ll crack this together.
