Extended Summary

Evelyn’s feeling horrendously hungover when Matt plonks down beside her on the beach. He’s quickly able to deduce that Evelyn’s still partying hard; Evelyn’s defensive – she’s just having fun. Although the crushing headache she’s currently nursing doesn’t really come under that heading… Matt’s concerned, but holds his tongue. Instead Matt shares his concerns with Mason who promises to talk to Evelyn. Meanwhile Evelyn gets a lecture from Alf, urging her to be more considerate for her housemates and Evelyn’s left annoyed.

Chris, meanwhile, is determined to prove that Brody’s stolen his burger recipe, and enlists John’s help, in order to narrow down the ingredients in Brody’s hamburger. The taste test leaves Chris even more convinced his intellectual property’s been stolen… He searches in the dumpster outside the Surf Club for more clues, and discovers an empty tube of wasabi. Certain this is the evidence he needs, he confronts Brody, who insists he didn’t steal anything from Chris! Brody then bans Chris from Salt, sick of his crazy accusations. Later as Brody whinges to Matt about the situation, Matt advises him there’s room in this town for two chefs – he’d better go find Chris and sort it out before this gets even more ridiculous.

Ash finds out from an angry Kat that McCarthy told the Professor about Kat’s relationship with Ash. Running into him at the diner, Ash has a go at Sergeant McCarthy, berating him for giving Kat a bad reference and causing her to lose the job she was going for at the university. McCarthy in turn points out to Ash that he was asked for his honest opinion and gave it – Kat’s a hard worker and resourceful woman; she’ll be fine. Her only mistake was getting involved with Ash. Ash is left to reflect on his own guilt. McCarthy then goes to Kat, wishing that she’d come to him to air her grievances in person, rather than sending her boyfriend as the messenger. Kat’s taken aback to hear what Ash has done, and insists she didn’t put him up to it. McCarthy now tells her the same thing he told Ash. He didn’t give Kat a bad reference to stick the boot in. He simply told the truth – and that is, that Kat has some dubious personal connections… McCarthy says he used to respect Kat but now he wonders what happened. It’s a hurtful blow to Kat’s pride.

Mason turns up to the house to see Evelyn. But seeing Mason’s concerned expression, Evelyn starts rambling about how sick she is of everyone worrying about her partying and coming home late. Mason decides not to go there and instead says he just wanted to offer to make Evelyn a cheese toastie – best thing for a hangover. Evelyn smiles, thankful to have one person not lecturing her. But her good mood doesn’t last long when Mason puts his foot in it with a joke about her drinking too much. Mason admits him and Matt had a chat about her partying and Evelyn blows up – why does everyone think she needs someone to look out for her now that Oscar and Hannah are dead? She’s harsh, and Alf has to interrupt the thrashing she’s giving Mason. Alf tries to talk to Evelyn again but she’s hell bent on pushing everyone away, shutting him down – Alf he’s not her father or a shrink. Evelyn then runs to her room and breaks down in tears.

Meanwhile, Chris is force feeding John, Marilyn & Roo food from the diner to review when Brody arrives. Chris is still on his high horse, and challenges Brody to a cook off to settle this! The others watch on, giggling. Brody won’t be dragged into some ridiculous competition. Chris tries to poke the bear – Brody’s just running scared. But Brody is the bigger man, lifting Chris’s ban from Salt and offering to show Chris his recipes whenever he likes. Brody extends a handshake and Chris reluctantly takes it. Brody goes and Chris delusionally thinks he’s won – the others can’t help but be amused.

Kat talks through wanted happened with Roo, sharing that Ash giving her old boss a dressing down has ruined her chances of ever getting a good reference from him. Kat wants to rip Ash’s head off but Roo advises she sleep on it first…. then even suggests what Ash did was kind of sweet. Kat can’t see how but Roo points out Ash went in to bat for her, and it shows how much he cares. Whatever happened with them, Roo has always thought just like it takes two to make a relationship work, it takes two to make one fail. Kat’s left to consider her own fault in this mess. Kat goes to Ash and even though she’s still annoyed by his approach, she thanks him for going in to bat for her with McCarthy. But regardless of his bad review, she knows she can’t blame other people anymore for her job prospects, and that includes Ash. Kat made her choices – and she’s the one who has to wear the consequences. Buoyed by the thawing in relations, Ash invites Kat to join him for dinner. Kat, however, doesn’t want to muddy the waters. Bottom line is – they both need to move on. Ash takes his frustration out on the punching bag at the gym, while Kat deletes photos of them at home. Seems this couple are truly over.

Having calmed down, Evelyn fronts up to Mason offering an apology for her behaviour. He brushes it away, knowing how tough she’s had it. He does remind that all this partying is only making it harder to deal with though. Evelyn promises she’ll try and curb her ways. But she wants to make it up to Mason for being so ungrateful – she offers to be his study buddy. Mason insists she doesn’t need to but Evelyn wants to. Friendship repaired, the pair head off to Mason’s with pizzas. After dinner, Mason questions Evelyn honestly on what she’s doing with her life, and specifically why she’s here with him – he’s not convinced on the whole study buddy story. Maso knows she’s here because he cares about her. But Evelyn’s in no mood for the heavy conversation so instead leans in to kiss Mason…and he doesn’t object…
