Extended Summary

Finding Evelyn alone in the darkened lounge and upset in the wake of their hook-up, Mason is confronted to learn that she is haunted by the ghosts of her recent romantic past. However, the truth is that he is too and it only confirms for them both that, as hot messes, their first instinct was right – they should just be friends. The next morning, Tori finds them having breakfast, making Evelyn uncomfortable, but Tori’s cool about it all. Arriving home, Evelyn is tackled by a worried Leah, who demands to know what is going on. Letting her guard down, Evelyn assures her she and Zac no longer need to worry about her as last night’s adventure has led to an epiphany. All the partying, all the hard charging and staying out – Evelyn has been trying to outrun her demons, rather than face them head on. Something she’s now determined to do.

Crossing with Mason later, she finds him taking home a car full of filing – one of the downsides to being a med student. Evelyn tells Mason that she’ll help him, they can do it at her place. Mason says she doesn’t have to but Evelyn insists. What that entails however, is some of the most mind-numbing filing work ever devised. Locked in Evelyn’s room together, they do their best to power through it, but soon the boredom gets too much and something else takes over… Lust. Evelyn and Mason are shocked to find themselves in bed once again. But then Evelyn hits on a wild idea: they’re friends, they’ve agreed to that. So why can’t they be friends with benefits?

Jokes about Leah’s future handle as a grandmother take a turn when Matt stumbles into the middle of the conversation. Teasing her with the idea that she’ll soon be a “granny” only fires her insecurities. Later, as she bangs around the Diner kitchen, Roo, Marilyn and Irene drag it all out of her. It’s hard enough being the woman you want to be through the prime of your life, let alone once you become invisible as a grandmother. Assuring her that doesn’t have to be the case, Leah’s friends urge her to embrace her impending grandmother-hood. She’s earned it! Later, checking in on his friend after his disastrous earlier attempt at some fun, Matt apologises for putting his foot in it, he thinks the world of her. VJ overhears and jokingly accuses Matt of coming onto his mum. Leah has started to come to terms with being a grandmother, and Matt’s show of concern has given her an idea. She appears at the Diner wearing a ‘Yia yia’ shirt, and after explaining to Nate that means ‘grandma’ he tells her no-one would pick it, boosting Leah’s confidence a little more.

Having kissed Tori a few days ago, Duncan sets about busily using the buds of this new relationship to best effect. He’s organised a special outing for his nearest and dearest to coincide with Tori’s upcoming 30th birthday. However, when Alf gets wind of it, he’s infuriated, accusing Duncan of neglecting his responsibility to make good on his overdue child maintenance, which only serves to drive them further apart. Is Duncan a new man, or the same selfish kid he’s always been?

Nate is also facing a question of character as he tries to build a bridge to Tori after drunkenly confessing his feelings a few nights ago. She doesn’t seem interested in revisiting things sober, and it’s Marilyn who advises him to stay the course and follow his heart, but when he does that it only leads to rejection and heartbreak.
